It seems that the animators were always undecided on Rens design. Sometimes he has a tail, other times he doesn't. The times he does have his tail it is either pink or the same color as his skin.

it’s not that they were undecided it’s just that it was encouraged (at spumco) to draw in your own style instead of conforming to a model sheet. his design did definitely evolve throughout the first two seasons though.
