It seems that the animators were always undecided on Rens design. Sometimes he has a tail, other times he doesn't. The times he does have his tail it is either pink or the same color as his skin.

it’s not that they were undecided it’s just that it was encouraged (at spumco) to draw in your own style instead of conforming to a model sheet. his design did definitely evolve throughout the first two seasons though.

i didn't like this show as a kid because it made me kinda uncomfortable. yet, my uncle was a big fan of ren and stimpy. he would sit me down with my cousin and turn on the television early in the morning when my mom wasn't around. we primarily grew up watching it on MTV. i wasn't very fond of it at first, but about a decade later, i still find myself running back to this show here and there. my uncle continues to randomly reference quotes from the show when we're up to something. he can mimick the voice of ren pretty well.
