I once saw someone around my parts in Illinois (Chicagoland) that imported a Citroen XM from the 1980’s into the US. The sad deal was because of US standards he had to swap the headlights out so it had Pontiac Grand Prix headlights instead of the european spec standard headlights. It was a very quirky and unique design but I always loved it for as odd as it was. I always thought it was a bigger car than it ultimately was. In photos it looked like it was the size of a Grand Prix or Lumina but it was more the size of an earlier 80’s Accord or a late 90’s Civic sedan.

@Robert Dewar - What does that mean? That to please the shareholders only, the companies allegedly produce cars that no customer wants but that satisfies the shareholders? What a stupid comment. EVERY company needs to make a profit - if not in the short run then in the long run, and EVERY company needs to make cars that customers buy, or the company will not exist in the long run. Maybe you are referring to the decline in quality that we can see with some brands, and maybe you think the responsible people are the shareholders? But then again - the decline in quality is MERELY due to the customers who mainly look at one thing: The price of the car. GM cannot sell a car that has the exact same qualities and features that a comparable Ford has - and then charge 30% more than Ford does. That is not going to work.Hence OF COURSE the companies look at their cost. In general I just get an urge to puke when people describe shareholders as some weird species of evil profit-hungry people. The fact is however that shareholders make sure that a given company stays competitive and produces goods that people buy. And OF COURSE shareholders (which by the way is also YOU and ME through our pension funds) want to get a return on their investment for taking a risk. Because buying a share is taking a risk. NO company produces a car just to please the customers, and not giving a fuck if they make a profit or not. If this Alpine was merely made to show what Renault was capable of from a technical point of view (just like Mercedes does with the S-class) - and if Renault deliberately made economic deficits on EVERY Alpine they sold - then they ALSO did that for the shareholders - because then by showing this "technical hightlight" and gaining respect from the customers, Renault would probably hope that the Alpine indirectly would boost the sales of the other Renaults.

My dad actually rented one of these in 1985 or 1986. As I’m sure some may know AMC imported these to the US and somehow one ended up a rental car. The rental took place in NY and Long Island from a enterprise rental place. he loved the way it handled and drove. It was Black with silver and red side stripes and beat up to death. Only three downsides to his rental: 1) a spring in the driver’s side seat broke through the fabric and my dad had to get a pillow so it wouldn’t injury him any further. 2) he couldn’t find where the gas cap was on the car, he did look under the fronk but thought that was something else. Eventually he figured it out. And finally number 3 he over heated on the Throgs Neck Bridge and cased quite a back log of traffic since there is no shoulder on the bridge. He loved the rental and freaked out when he saw me watching this video. We watched the entire video together.

There’s a modified intake manifold for those cars that fixes the issue with the front two cylinders being starved for fuel. Another plus is, you can then use a Holley carb.

@@mickeydee3595 , the Fuego was gorgeous from every angle and even the interior was a beautiful place to be in. But it did have some technical issues and the body was very, very rust-prone. Probably only Alfa Romeos were quicker form 0 to 100% rust.

In their day they were a very formidable car you could sit in the fast lane with the headlights on and everything would get out of your way. Happy days......

These were highly regarded for their handling and at times even better than Porsches back then but not being an established well known brand and quite niche it did not sell that highly. Alpine recently released the new A110 after many years of hiatus, a homage to the old one and there's nothing but praise for it, mainly for it's driving dynamics and just for being different to the norm.

I was a test driver for American Motors / Jeep / Renault in the 80s; I was lucky enough to drive many thousands of miles in these (turbo only, non-turbo was not spec'd for US sale, I think). It's an amazing car, for the open road. A French 911, and would bite you if mistreated. We were ready to go to market, then Chrysler came along and bought AJR. A bit of work to drive, but fairly comfortable, as long as it didn't get too hot outside. The turbo V6 in the back was a joy to listen to over the miles. It's not as weird as you portray. But thanks for brining back some memories.

They're not just metric tires, they are Michelin TRX. You can still get them new but they cost a lot to replace, as I think Michelin only produces a few batches per year. And of course, just like the PAX you had on the Phantom, the rims are specific, so you can't put anything else without replacing them.
