I appreciate Impulse's thoughts on how the Hermit's began to chase algorithms at the expense of themselves. I don't know if this lines up, but from my perspective as a viewer, this began to change in Season 7, and really took off with the advent of the Live Series's. This new season, I've found myself looking almost everyday to see if there is a new interaction between the Hermits on YT. The realness, the comradery, the LAUGHTER, has been a wonderful boon to an otherwise challenging year.
@Haplo-san
@Haplo-san 8 ай бұрын
I don't know how many people have been keep telling that in the past but I definetely commented many times over the years in the videos of many Hermits I follow whenever the topic came up; that is "the interaction" between other hermits the viewers want to see. The interaction makes people watch and come back for more. I can't tell how bored I was when there was no interaction but just build build and build and only monologues; most of time I skip the parts they do things alone like terraforming or building a same and same farms which I have seen more than 100 times over the years from the same hermits or other hermits. People who watch many hours of Hermitcraft content on KZbin every week are most likely a lonely people, and lonely viewers don't need more lonely content from people who are playing games "all alone by themselves" only for sake of making a forced episode out of it and sometimes asking I feel as insincere and false-interactive questions for viewers to encourage people to comment more but yet they won't have time to read or response. So viewers doesn't look for turn-based interaction if they ever get; viewers really wish to see for unscripted, REAL-TIME human interaction which can only happen between hermits. And this includes live-streams too. Old fans are not kids or teens anymore and even younger Hermits from 8 years ago are not young anymore, so people look for the "realness" as you have mentioned too.

Do you mean the “Life” series as in 3rd Life? Funny thing is, I think that series did and does so well because it is 100% interaction. Production doesn’t play into it as much as the participants playing off one another.

@@TheColorCraftMCYes, thank you. I meant the various "Life" series. I've enjoyed every one of them, because of the interactions.
@smolmoru
@smolmoru 8 ай бұрын
the interactions is why I keep on coming back to watch every G.I.G.S phasmo stream vod. the dynamics of these 5 is just great and I really love that they're all basing so close to each other now in season 10. but yeah the Life series had the realness of friends being just friends having fun together and the videos make you feel like you're a part of it. unlike most overly polished content, videos, whatsoever that feels so distant from the world we average people live in. I always had a gread appreciation for artists, creators and so on who stayed down to earth. it's a delicate balance to not lose your head in the clouds from fame. even if compared to the big celebrities it's just a tiny bit of fame.

On Ren's point that what you guys do is more than content: HermitCraft has turned into my favourite TV show and I watch most of the hermits every single week. I'm a SAHM/manager of family life lol so I can have TV on in the background while I do my chores and tasks. Tuning into individual Hermit's episodes is like watching a stand alone POV in this shared universe within the HC Multiverse (previous seasons lol). Every Hermit comes with their own personality and flair which is exactly like performing a character. You guys are actors, editors, and a whole board of creative directors doing your own things that comes together into one large televised experience for us the viewers. It's very neat

Hermit videos are far more entertaining than what passes for mainstream entertainment. It'll be interesting to see what happens with the AI apocalypse that might finally kill off Hollywood. People hanging out and goofing with friends may well be on the rise as far as what gets watched.

Don't forget the educational value and that's twofold: 1) we can play along with them, so to speak, but when a season is over and the world is uploaded, we can all play in that world and experience it, and b) each build teaches us more about minecraft and what's possible and teach us how to build like them. Each Hermit has their own styles, strength, and weaknesses but all of them keep learning and welcome opportunities to upgrade their skills to be a well-rounded, humble and respectful player. That is so refreshing as that is a valuable lesson to all.

"the audience coming with us" This is a little thing that I think is very important. I still remember the first time I was watching a youtuber who had edited down a stream into a video, and she suddenly used words like "we're" and "us" as if everything on screen belonged to all of us, and I just thought... wow... it's really like everyone's together. I've noticed that ever since. We know we're not really moving the character, but it's similar to how you feel involved yourself when reading a good book.

Here's a comparison to something Skizz said. 34:10 Barbara Streisand said she stopped listening to other singers when she was creating her first album. She didn't want to accidently copy another artist. She wanted to create her own sound. This makes me think of what Skizz said about BDubs videos. Yes, Skizz is Barbara Streisand in this comparison.

I think I've commented on other videos recently but I will say it again, I am LOVING this season of Hermitcraft. Purely because the "trend" is YOU guys all just being YOU and having a blast in the game together. There's so much less big build talk, and a lot more interaction and even some flying by the seat of your pants. There are still AMAZING builds, but even watching people who are still expanding building or redstone skills and learning as they go, it's all just so "normal everyday player" stuff, and it's still just you all and your awesome personalities having a blast together, making us laugh, while NOT being scripted, but just being genuinely yourselves and enjoying the game with your buddies! I've been watching since 2017, and I think every season gets better, but this one so far is my all time favorite season, not by miles but by inches, yet it is still over the top amazing in it's own way. My most favorite parts so far are literally just when you are cracking each other up, your laughter and wisecracks make us all laugh, and laughter truly is the best medicine. You take us all away from the mundane everyday life for a little while, you show us amazing creative builds and you make us smile, laugh and connect with us all in a personal way that draws us all in, and makes us feel a part of the ride.

This is again an excellent episode, thank you! One thing on the point of "hyperproduced content" vs "we like to see YOU play": It may sound bad, but due to life happening i don´t have a lot of friends anymore, let alone play with them for hours and hours on this beautiful gameworld. Watching you lots play on hermitcraft is... heaven. It is a substitute, but a really good one. I can be with you guys, and if you are having a blast, i surely will have one too. It's almost as if i were there. It follows me around days, and i sometimes even dream about it. So, being an not-so-good player myself with many time constraints, this is as close i can get to a social, family-feeling thing of online play. Keep it on, please!

Ren is one of my favourite creators of all time. He has a perfect balance of storytelling flair and relaxed, down-to-erath personality that hold my attention and makes every second of watching a joy to be there for. One of my favourite online memories is hanging out in Rens stream when vault hunters first came out, and theory crafting builds for his base and how to integrate all these wacky things like vendors and whatnot into a sci-fi style base, eventually settling on all the donators being colonists on this new planet that were in cryopods. Something about that whole session really stuck with me about how creatively ren can take simple ideas and the basic building blocks of things in the environment and turn them into grand branching narritives, without coming off as pretentious or forced. Keep up the amazing work Ren and Rebz will see you around in chat!

I really appreciate Ren talking about his experience in life with realizing he's just "okay" at something, and having to contend with that fact in regards to his passions. I had the same problem when I was in art college, and my favorite things I was doing (and focusing on) were fiber arts and ceramics, and while I was so passionate about weaving on the loom and throwing clay, I realized very fast that I was "just okay" at these things, and that my creativity was very much below that of my classmates, and that obviously made it hard considering those were what I was.... y'know, focusing on and getting grades on. So thank you Ren. Me of over a decade ago absolutely needed to hear that it's okay to just BE okay at what you like doing, but me of now absolutely appreciates that it's not just a me thing and that I didn't waste that time. love the episode guys, very much looking forward to part 2!

This podcast is the one way I discover what my favorite youtubers look like. For one, there's something reassuring to the fact that people older than me enjoy Minecraft (cause listen to you all, I never feel like you're older than me). Another observation is that absolutely no one looks like I imagined them. Ren's voice made me think he'd look like a loveable teddy bear. Don't forget Minecraft is from the early 2010's your going to people who we're in their 'gaming prime' from that time as well as mid, late and recent adopters regardless of how they found their way to the game. When I say 'gaming prime' make no mistake about it I'm taking childhood, teens and maybe early adulthood when you have some effective free time no major $$$ commitments or family demands persay. I'm personally closer to 40 then anything else and I've not played every edition but I've cycled back every few years from early release (only oak wood type, no nether etc ) to now the Hermits been a big reason for it ofcourse. 👍

as someone who makes a minecraft video every now and then, they way Ren speaks about creating video is just so inspiring, i really miss hermitcraft, i stopped watching for a while and now i just feel like i've fallen out of it and can't start watching again bc im out of the loop but it makes me wanna appreciate it again because hermitcraft is such a massive group passion project that makes you wanna love it for even that, let alone the incredible content and everything surrounding it

Ren comes across as so humble and likeable. Listening to his stories about growing up in South Africa while building on Hermitcraft was what made me a fan years ago.

This episode motivated me a lot, after hearing ren speak about himself and growing up and really emphasizing the fact hes just another human, it makes me realize that I myself am extremely similar to ren and hearing him talk about his journey and who he was as a child really does give me motivation and hope to achieve my dreams as a current high school student :) i’ve always felt like i wouldnt make it doing an art form for a living, but rens experience really helps me stay hopeful. :D

The conversation about what you make being art reminds me about a post that was going around hermitcraft tumblr last year, which i sadly wasnt able to find, but remember pretty well. The focus was how on hermitcraft, specifically compared to many other big smps throughout the years, has such a unique but incredibly well working... i guess command structure works. That post specifically referred to hermitcraft as an artists collective, and i think that truly is the best phrase to describe what you all are doing together. It's through collaboration that this whole thing works, and with that what is individual pieces of art becomes part of a big collection of various styles. It's incredible to see, and inspiring

ren's season 8 is honestly one of my favorites of all time. i never really cared much for lore in minecraft lets plays before, but the way ren does it definitely changed my mind. i think its the fact that his videos still seem largely unscripted and mostly just improvised in the moment. it never really feels like he's playing a fictional character, just expressing different aspects of himself through a role or storyline. he's not just reading off lines, he's directly experiencing whats happening in the game and expressing his true feelings through the lens of his current role. it reminds me of when me my friends used to go on roblox rp servers and make up silly characters to role play as to try to make each other laugh, we used to get so into it that half of the server would usually end up following us around lol. acting out a role can honestly be just as much a form of self expression as being your normal self can be. a story can sometimes showcase who we are and what we're capable of more than our normal behavior can. it can bring something out in us thats not always obvious at first glance. ren's videos are a prime example of how story can be transformative. narrative is the core of the human experience, every person's life its own story. we all seek meaning through narrative, to understand the sequential events of whatever real life story is currently in front of us. there's just something very human about telling stories; we use them to cope, to express ourselves, to connect with others, to share knowledge, to have fun. ren is a master of reframing events and creating situations that add up to become parts of a much larger story, his 3rd life episodes being a notable example of this. his brilliant escalation of events by purposefully going red created some of the most high tension nail biting unscripted content ive ever seen. it genuinely felt like game of thrones but for minecraft, except the emotions and events were all genuinely real and unplanned. 3rd life would not have been the series it was without ren's commitment to the story of it. grian and martyn had some of the best storylines in 3rd life because ren and scar were the driving forces of their plots. he and scar created the setting that allowed the others to find their own stories, there wasnt a single person in that series that wasnt swept up into the drama they had built. it was amazing to watch

On the topic of you guys bringing back the humanity to Hermitcraft, thats what made me love every one of the hermits in some way. I started late season 7 with Mumbo when they were doing the Hermit dares and i found the STUPID interactions between the hermits wholesome. then as season 8 rolled around my GF and i both watched all of boatem and then Doc with the lightning tower which made us find Ren and so on. It was the interactions between you all that i cherish the most about the Hermits. A good one to look at are TFC's videos every interaction you guys had with him was wholesome and thats what i want in the content i consume.

I love this opportunity to get to know the other hermits. I’ve seen Ren for a while now, but did not know “Ren lore” and to find out the man had an affinity for the best bands, the best fantasy/scifi, and MtG to top it all off… now I just want to know more about it all!

I always respected Rendogs cinematic effort. It was so well done and I know how hard it is to do all that extra effort per video. I hate editing myself so it was amazing work for a solo dude. On a separate note I prefer the big builds and we'll done videos than just the chatting to other ppl on server all episode. I know I'm in the minority but It's what I enjoy. So I watch only the creators that are putting in more effort then those that are chilling out. I didn't watch impulse last season but the previous season with the candy factory impulse was having so much fun building and it actually made me love his content. So I hope this season it's simular to that season. But if it's not that's okay if the majority of ppl are happy that's important

Yeah, I got really disconnected from Hermitcradt since the Civil War storyline. It was at that point where they started making these huge and over the top cinematic experiences and parted ways with the simplicity of playing Minecraft and having fun with friends. So far, I love season 10 because it's much more like the early seasons, which made me fall in love with the Hermits originally. I hope there's no overarching story and huge server wide "role playing" events like the civil war, or the "moon big" story.

I think one of the beginning tipping points for the hermits to stop chasing the algorithm was Mumbo's second break, where, at least from my end, the strain became so visible.

29:46 i think ren has a good point that there is always a price to pay in terms of time dedicated to editing, but i think the difference is the intent or motivation behind it. inspiration vs obligation is what’s coming to mind. if you feel obligated to create something to fit the algorithm or to please what you think an audience wants then it’s not worth the time. BUT if you are excited and feel inspired to create something out of your own imagination, that is absolutely worth the time! i think that inspiration is what drives those fun and funky editing bits. from a viewer perspective it’s so cool seeing those bits of the creative genius and i feel like the obligatory editing bits don’t always have that depth or sometimes that joy behind them. (of course this is all from an outside perspective and i am not a creator in this space myself, but that’s kinda how i think ab it)

First: Love ya Ren. O7 Second: I've been telling Jev for a few years now that the interactions between you guys is the most entertaining part. I loved the cinematic quality, but the scriptedness of it took something away that we couldn't get anywhere else. I'm loving how season 10 is flowing so far.

This just got me thinking how wild it is that communication has improved so much. In the 2000s if we wanted to skype with family across the country or the world there were increments of 30 second delays and today you can do a podcast with good sound in video and sound with very little delay or degradation.

Some of the best content in season 9 took place in Doc's perimeter... he took the time, to select suggestions, (the elevator for example) and art from his followers, and integrated it as 'murals' in his perimeter walls. 🙂 And of course.. covering the perimeter was legendary.

As an artist that’s literally painting a fireplace on a wall rn, I agree with you guys 100%. I love how well spoken u guys are because you take the thoughts right out of my head and I admire how hardworking and passionate all of you are. Creating minecraft videos take a lot of work, I’ve wanted to be a youtube for a looong while and have myself started a solo minecraft series before. I got a paycheck once and then youtube updated their monetisation and I got busy with studying. I deleted and privated most of my old vids but I rlly enjoyed making videos. it took a lot of work even tho I’m not a professional and it didn’t look very good lol. And mc vids are my fav to watch on youtube, I love it so much. I’m taking a diploma in animation and I’m hoping to take part in an animated series one day because I lowkey love creating entertaining videos and I’m better at drawing than I am at editing, I don’t have as much charisma as you guys. But I still lowkey wanna be a youtuber ehe, it’s one of my fav art forms. Being able to entertain and inspire so many people, bringing smiles to faces. Like knowing you make people’s day brighter after whatever sorta thing they’ve had to handle that day, that’s amazing

The discussion on algorithms really hits me. I have tried (and given up) so many times over the past decade, but this year I decided that I was going to try again (as I do every January) but do it for myself this time. I want to stop worrying about viewer numbers and just enjoy the process of creation. Of course, no one really ignores the numbers, but I think I've stuck with it longer than I ever have before and maybe it works for people, maybe it doesn't, but I'VE been having fun and that's the important bit I forgot about before.
