Morton becoming Greenock Morton was just a name expansion not a merger. (like Caledonian Thistle adding Inverness). Incidently Morton (as the are known Greenock is rarely used) could be of the few clubs named after a person. James Morton was a local entrepreneur and was certainly patron of the club at one point. It also could be named after Morton terrace a road in the town no one is 100% sure. I think the road was named after him anyway. Many people have said that as James Morton was an iron merchant he owned the canning factory JT Morton where Millwall started but that was actually John Morton from Aberdeen and sadly they aren't actually linked. St Mirren are named after the Patron saint of Paisley (Mirin) and they actually started as a Cricket club! They are one of only 5 teams (Rangers Celtic Hearts and Dumbarton) that have been in the Scottish League system from the start in 1890

I feel sorry for the Bankies. Their support was dwindling by the time they came to Love street in the 90s. They got a tiny section of the Caledonia stand. The first time I counted 48, the next time they brought 27. If the pyramid system kicks in for the junior clubs, it would be good to see them rise through the leagues again. I've made friends over the years from across the river who used to follow them. It's a good catchment- the town itself, Duntocher, Old Kilpatrick etc. Could become a force again.

Alan Shields Hamilton South Lanarkshire I am originally from Elderslie next to Paisley. Inverclyde came in to being in 1996 Before That it was part of Renfrewshire & before that along with Paisley it was all part of Strathclyde but Strathclyde covered a large area up until 1973. Morton's original rivals where Port Glasgow not the Junior club yoo would know now though Port Glasgow did at one time have a senior club. And Saint Mirren there original rivals where could Abercorn. It's referred to as The Renfrewshire derby because most older fans of both clubs would remember the time when both towns where part of Renfrewshire. I know it's no longer the case that both towns are in Renfrewshire but country borders change a lot as time moves on & more than likely will change again & both towns will likely move to be under different council districts once again at some point in the future. Personally I would say Paisley is in Renfrewshire & Greenock is in Inverclyde but if you say that to people in there late 40's to 70's they would say it was all part of Renfrewshire. I am a Pollok fan I was never a Saint Mirren fan growing up the name sounded far to religious to me but one of my uncles on my Dads side used to follow them home & away & I had one friend that followed Saint Mirren & there was a guy I know from High School he was a massive Saint Mirren & Manchester United fan. Also go & watch Carlisle United point of doing that is to see different club not enough promotion & relegation between divisions in Scotland makes the Leagues a bit stail in my view. If my health had been better I would likely be travelling about watching games before The Pandemic much like Sam. I follow Pollok because my Girlfriend's father is from there & she would not go to watch Johnstone Burgh with my & I would not watch Larkhall Thistle with here so when we got back together post my Stroke we compromised & started to follow Pollok. Keep safe.

Alan Shields Hamilton South Lanarkshire Scotland. Saint Mirren is definitely the much bigger of the two clubs Paisley alone being the biggest town in Scotland that is not a City & when you add in all the surrounding area's Saint Mirren have a good size fanbase for being so close to Glasgow. Saint Mirren like Greenock Morton are always sead to attract people how believe they should always support there local club & Celtic fans without the money to t go Celtic Park for Celtic home games I would personally say there is some element of truth to this. Saint Mirren's last trophy Was The League Cup in 2013 when they defeated Hearts it was a big upset at the time with Hearts expected to win easily The Players end up back in The Bull Inn in Paisley after the game Stephen Thompson one of the Saint Mirren players at the time end up playing the guitar I remember it being in The Paisley Daily Express at the time he had previously played from Dundee United & Saint Mirren. I remember a lot of people that where not even Saint Mirren fans went to Hampden Park that day to cheer them on. Paul Lambert is Saint Mirren's most famous player of the modern era He played for Motherwell , Borussia Dortmund whare he won The Bundesliga & Champions League against Juventus in 1997 & then went to Celtic where he was part of the team that stopped Rangers winning 10 in a row He also played many times for Scotland. My uncle Tommy my Mum's youngest brother was Paul Lambert's Driving Instructor when he was at Saint Mirren. Also Ian Ferguson that went on to help Rangers win 9 in a row started out at Saint Mirren. And Morton whare one of the first Scottish clubs to field foreign players back in the 70's from Scandinavia I think this is something my Dad told me. And I believe Morton where the first club in Scotland to used floodlights thery whare more like lanterns hang from the rafters of the standards than what we would think of floodlights now this was in 1958 in a match against Third Lanark. www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.glasgowtimes.co.uk/sport/other_football/13304413.amp/

@alanfox6914 жыл бұрын
There are much more Junior club in Glasgow than Senior clubs. Professional clubs in Glasgow there is only 4 Rangers, Celtic, Partick Thistle & Queens Park. Lowland League club B.S.C Glasgow started out as a youth academy only and are still trying to buy land to build a ground in The Broomhill area of Glasgow. Junior clubs you have Pollok, Rutherglen Glencarin, Petershill, Ashfield , Vale of Clyde how do not play far from Celtic Park & also Benburb how do not play far from Ibrox Stadium. & if you include Greater Glasgow then you can include Arthurlie & Saint Roch's. Clyde started out in the shadows of Celtic Park & now play in The new town of Cumberland. Clydebank are a Junior club but inspite of the name actually play in West Dumbartonshire the same as Dumbarton F.C how are a senior club. Myb I have forgotten some of The Glasgow junior clubs but I dont think so.

@@alanfox691 A derby with Morton in the top flight would be great, not happened for 32 years, At Christmas 79-80 Morton were top of the Premier league and St Mirren finished 3rd and in with a shout of winning it going into the last few weeks. Its a fact that the greatest era of Scottish football in the 60s to 70s mainly had 2 leagues, less repetitive fixtures, less pressure on survival and more willingness to give young players a chance because each game wasnt a 6 pointer. Playing the same team 4 or 5 times each season is boring.
