If I told you that in a 24 hour span these two couples managed to lose their dog, essentially cheat with one another, "murder" a guy and dispose of his body by throwing it over off a cliff, take Molly, pretend to lick a dudes ass crack, crash their car into the woods, and then fight against a masked murderer, you'd say "wow, that sounds crazy". And yet with just the last 5 minutes it made it feel like nothing happened. Could have been great.

@@poetknight8345 it's not even that bad though. I mean, yeah it's not "groundbreaking" or anything but it's one of those films where you can tell that that just wasn't the intention of the filmmaker. It's one of those films that is simply made to entertain you, no matter how simplistic & predictable it can be & it does (at least for me) work. I personally love movies like this that know what they are & don't try to go beyond that to try to be something it's not. Not every movie needs to be "groundbreaking" for it to be considered "good". If it's well directed, well acted & (in this case) actually terrifies me, then it's done it's job. I think Dave Franco did a excellent job with this film & the film is creepy in some parts, due to the atmosphere they've created. It's definitely worth a watch.

Where! Not were, like in a past tense sense. It should have been 275 dislikes but people don't think. They get manipulated every day of their life. The 275 likes were (get it moron?) like the review's opinion in a short statement that people think is their opinion, when in fact they have been dumbed down and manipulated their whole lives, from cradle to the grave, to buy and like and dislike as manipulated by commercials and popular celebrities (mostly commercials) and politicians!!! I think I'll watch the movie to spite the review and the 275 "likes" in this comment. Hehe. I'm bored, you're stupid. Pleasure to meet you, stupid. Hehe. Ok. This is the edit portion. Movie does kinda suck. I don't know if I feel stupid that it sucked after I insulted all these likes or if people are really stupid like portrayed in the movie. Like this scamdemic/plandemic is definitely overblown, the world IS ran by elite, Satanic pedophiles and people still believe that 2 planes could knock down 3 buildings and that a 50' wide plane full of fuel left a 20' wide hole in a wash d.c. building. And I'm the one that's crazy dumb, right?. The freaking world is full of cowardly, willfully ignorant/stupid people who can't think critically. The movie sucks because it reflects us to a tee.

Top 5 things I HATED about this movie: 1. Very boring and uninteresting characters with little to no relatability, whom you won't give two shits about. 2. Unnecessary drama, with very little tension or ambiance to add that extra sense of dread and creepiness. 3. Murderer completely comes out of nowhere, with no explanation as to who he is, why he is doing this, how did he invent this "hobby" of his and overall is not very intimidating and lacks any real originality or personality, especially compared to Slasher Movie Icons like, Freddy Kruger, Jason Voorhees, Leatherface, Michael Myers and so on. 4. STOP PUSHING IDENTITY POLITICS IN MOVIES! 5. And the story feels just like a very generic and overdone slasher style movie, though a bit modernized but that's about it.

*SPOILER WARNING* All I kept thinking while watching this movie was, "Are they _intentionally_ making all the characters incredibly unlikable?" The woman who was convinced that the person renting out the house was racist based solely on her rental request being rejected and Dan Steven's request being accepted later (which there are several possible reasons for) was aggressively unlikable. When they arrive at the house she insults the guy up-front by rudely suggesting he couldn't own such a nice house because of the way he looks. Then when he takes a little dig back at her ... are we supposed to interpret that as him being racist or just paying her back for her comment based on appearance to teach her a lesson? The fact that she made the appearance-based comment first undercuts any racism angle. In the end, that guy ends up being the most sympathetic character in the movie and a victim of _her_ prejudice. Is that irony intentional or accidental? I'm not sure. And it certainly seems like a metaphor that the woman who seems to create all of her own problems with her victim mentality and accusing other people of racism while actually being the one hurting others ends up being the only person who isn't killed by the killer but dies because she accidentally runs off a cliff in the fog, yet again being her own worst enemy. If that's intentional, it's a brilliant metaphor, but I'm doubtful that anyone in Hollywood these days would _intentionally_ write a story where the person accusing others of racism is actually the most terrible character and is really creating her own problems. And while that character stands out as being the worst, because she's an actor in pretty much every negative event between the main characters, all of the other characters act in ways that make you hate them, too. By the time the killer showed up, I just figured he was doing the world a favor ... except for the guy who was renting out the house, which certainly doesn't seem like what the movie was aiming for. But who knows?
@polarbear92472 жыл бұрын
💯 correct.
@jerrodking22242 жыл бұрын
I don't know if the movie was good or not, but I found it fantastically ironic and hilarious how the main characters screwed themselves up so much before the killer even did anything. The first five minutes the husband is barely containing his obsession with his work partner, and it was all so awkward I was cracking up. To me, very refreshingly, seems the filmmaker was purposely establishing the caretaker was not racist, but all of the problems were brought upon themselves by their own action. Though I will say, the wife was actually okay - she was actually pretty rational, and honest enough to know she was guilty by not calling the police. Felt bad for her, but everyone else, especially Mina, yes, were very unlikeable or screwed themselves up, and I think it was purposeful, a movie where the killer took a secondary role as the "victims" were completely capable of messing up hard on their own.
@stephensprague96352 жыл бұрын
Dave Franco is on record saying this was motivated by people he knows having awful AirBnB experiences due to racial prejudice. If you don’t think people are denied places to rent/other luxuries based strictly on their skin color/background, you need to talk to more non-white people/POC. Yes, Mina was not wholly likable in The Rental, but I do think you should be a bit more open-minded

(Possible spoilers ahead) I thought the film was pretty good, would give it like a B+… it’s a great concept. I thought Franco did a good job blending the couples dysfunction with the killer situation. There definitely were moments that gave me anxiety, which is a breath of fresh air in majority of the recent horror films released. Of course you want to know why the killer did what he did and who he is, but that’s the point. It’s ambiguous. He’s just a sadistic psychopath. I thought the acting was great, no cheesy dialogue. It felt real. It reminds me The Strangers. It definitely leaves room for a sequel. I hope there is, I’m curious to find out more about this killer. Hopefully if there is a sequel, Franco tackles it from a different perspective, so it doesn’t feel repetitive. All in all, good character drama and horror film.

I think pretty much everything Chris said is on point. My number one problem with the movie was the writing, particularly the characters' decision making. The worst being the first big decision to not call the cops. Who the F would think that by calling the cops their secret would be revealed?! If you were in this situation and called the cops do you really think they would sit you and your group down to show you the entirety of the footage? That one decision was the reason everything bad happened to these characters and made the whole movie seem super contrived

I’m not saying this movie is a masterpiece, but it was pretty good and I feel like these comments and this review simply shits on the whole thing. I agree, the majority of the movie is about relationship drama. And though I was left asking myself “Who is this random killer?” NONE OF THAT MATTERS. It’s supposed to be ambiguous. It’s supposed to show you there’s a psychopath on the loose that has a clear MO and formula that he rinses and repeats. REMEMBER: Part of the killer’s perversion is him watching the daily lives of these people. To him, it’s soap opera or a drama. Maybe Dave Franco focused SOO MUCH of the film on their relationships because that’s exactly what the killer was doing. My two cents and also, it rated a 74% on Rotten Tomatoes, so clearly there’s a sizable group of people that did enjoy it.

Since we're quarantined, can you watch the Anime Attack On Titan & review it? The 4th season will be coming in the Fall & it'll be the last. It's amazing! My favorite series ever! On IMDB, it has some of the highest rated episodes ever, a list that includes every show ever made. It has 2 episodes within the top ten, at #2 & #3. Only Breaking Bad's Ozymandias is ranked above them at #1. I highly recommend it!

I think it was good, if you ever rent airbnbs the scary thing is knowing that someone renting it can install cameras and track and trap people if they want to kill them. The actors all do a great job. I thought it was good but I was hoping for more . I wish there had been more interactions with the killer and the victims instead of such quick kills. They could have dropped their phones in a struggle or left them on a table and been left in isolation after the killer slashes their car tires or something. I was hoping at least the victims would have become aware of the killer first cause their fear is what lets us feel scared. I don't think any of them except one were even aware that there was a killer so that was one way it definitely could have been better but I still think it was a good movie and definitely worth watching. Don't go into it expecting a slasher flick go into it it expecting to watch a creepy thriller
