This repair shop in Glasgow, Scotland is giving a second lease of life to a range of items from clothes to broken mobile phones.
"We want to see a radical change to throwaway culture," says Sophie Unwin, from Remade Network, the social enterprise behind the shop.
Remade want to encourage people to rethink the way they use and consume everyday items.

Most tech these days has built-in obsolescence so that the devices fail within a certain time frame. It's all about profit at the cost of common sense and the environment.

@gilkesisking Linux is better than Windows for lack of bloatware, spyware, telemetry etc. But I'm really talking about hardware and most production really including cars, washing machines, household items etc they are built with design flaws, weak parts, limited use to continue the cycle of profit.

@gilkesisking Bill Gates stole Dos from IBM and gave it a GUI, now he uses the platform for tracking, telemetry, adverts, bloatware etc. Then he used nefarious means to monopolise the industry, as you said, open-source is the enemy to people like Gates. Now he helps security services with facial recognition software, bots for propaganda and facilitating the selling of our personal data. I use dual boot mostly because I need Microcrap's platform for compatibility. But Linux has improved vastly in the last decade and would be my preferred platform.

Used to have an IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad z61t. And at that time, under warranty, I could contact them and they would drop ship any part of the machine I needed and I'd repair/repalce it myself...it was so perfectly modular. Can't do this with their newest machines.

it isnt just our culture it is the manufacturers having created cheaper, less easily repaired products for the exact reason that if they didnt break or were easily repaired they would sell less products - - prices come down and now people expect the lower priced/poorly made goods even the better brands have lowered their quality and costs to compete..it is a vicious cycle or falling standards and expectations

Such an admirable idea! I personally hate things that are just made to break down and cease to work shortly after their guarantee expires. Why can't I get a CD player repaired, a cell phone battery easily accessible for changing or just small exchange parts produced for a long time after a product hits the market? IMO it should be illegal to produce machines without an option for repair and without proper exchange parts (regardless of the country they're produced in) and to make throwaway stuff, electronics and other machines specifically. Durability and longevity used to be a sign of quality and something to be proud of - when the hell did that change?

@@edc1569 You’d be surprised, friend. Apple has been doubling down on accredited third party technicians in recent years. So much so that some smaller local repair shops (especially in the US) have had to shut down. Just search “Apple right to repair” or watch any video from Louis Rossman. I personally love Apple’s ecosystem more than Android and think that their products are worth the money, but I’m deathly afraid of any of my tech failing on me because fixing them would probably cost as much as replacing them.

Great idea but we need to look at the economics of these vs what people get paid, a family on minimum wage has such a tight budget the overall "cost" is literally the most important thing. It's great saying it's only £2 more and you're helping the planet but from some people's perspective that is £2 crisp's money for a kid's playtime snack, or £2 less in the family budget. And yes for some it's that hard. With minimum wage, we are heading back to the Victorian times were we paid people so little, it essentially turned them into economic slaves. This last year Covid allowed people too busy working for a living a chance to look for better paying or less egregious work. As they say the rich are getting richer, the poor well they as always get poorer.

Absolutely fabulous. Growing up my dad always had a TV or microwave on the table he was repairing. Has to be economical though. £6 for a cable she could fully replace for £2-£3. Thats a novelty not a business model. Built in viability is a massive problem. Manufactures need incentivising to have a repair policy. Real change has to come from government.

Right to Repair is a critical aspect of avoiding the world falling apart. Unfortunately, rich, greedy, selfish, self-centered corporations like Apple don't like that, they would rather everything be disposable to maximize their already massive profits. I remember some years ago while on a train in India, a woman in my cabin had a leather bag with a torn strap. In the west it would have been thrown out or it would have cost a lot of money and time to repair. Suddenly a you man showed up who offered his services to repair the bag. He squatted down and looked at it for a minute and then took out some tools from his little bag. He took the bag apart, fixed the torn strap, and sowed it all back together. The 6 of us in the cabin were all flabbergasted at his skill. He charged less than $1 for his work. It was truly amazing. We need to do this as well in the west. Too much waste.

Should we have a tax on new durable items? Raises their price, making it more sensible to repair items. The tax could be directed to train and support people who do he repairs, making that career a viable choice. We definitely should have the cost of recycling electronics collected at point of sale so that people would know the real cost of ownership.

And so my 43 year old home made speakers that I threw together in 1978, are still working and sounding as good as new, after I replaced the outer foam rings in the woofers. Plus I repaired my 1976 Heathkit AA-1506 stereo audio power amplifier, my 1987 Denon DCD-900 CD player, my DVD player, my Sony MDR-XD200 headphones, Electric shaver, Vacuum cleaner, Toaster, Microwave oven, Danby Simplicity SAC5250 air conditioner( working at this very minute despite being 19 1/2 years old), Lenovo 6138A17 computer, Computer printer, Computer keyboard, Samsung flat screen TV, Foldable shopping cart (Now has new and better wheels and other repairs), my Palm m505 handheld personal digital assistant, my 1992 Casio DPX-300 Watch, and my 1986 Heathkit HERO 2000 (ET-19) robot. It makes economic sense to repair when the wage/productivity ratio of the consumer is near that of the producer. In the west it's totally askew for imported good. Businesses here engage in simple labour arbitrage. Buy from countries with low wage per unit of productivity. Sell in wealthy countries with high wage per unit of productivity. The profit is the price difference of the unit of productivity they are trading. When that normalizes globally it will probably start being economic again to repair stuff.

81. Allah's promise (surah 41,ayat53) Allah promises that Allah will show us signs from horizon and within ourselves, until it is clear to us that Islam is truth.

To your heart: "I will praise you because in a fearful and wonderful way I was formed. Wonderful are your works and my soul knows it very well." (Psalm 139:14). Hi. His life is God's plan. From the womb, God dreamed of you and traced a path. Will we choose God's plans, or ours? Jesus is the Way, the truth and the life and no one comes to the Father without Christ. Invoke him and he will sustain you and lead you, in love, to his purposes of peace and salvation. His care will supply you. His comfort and faithfulness will strengthen you. You are precious to God. Pray. Read the Bible. Jesus will return soon.Greetings. From Brazil.🙏🌹
