Arcadia took on the challenge of solving the Department of Energy heat light ban that is in effect NOW. The line of lights that Kevin discusses in this video, all meet or exceed the regulations imposed by the DOE. Please let us know what you think, and tell us if you want to see a more scientific video comparing things like light production, and heat output! Thanks for watching!

Another prime example of how government regulations do not fully consider the damage they are doing before implementing changes like this. Once it became apparent they should have granted at least a temporary exemption for the animal industry until a solution could be made and readily available to consumers.

But I don't see this as THAT big of an issue, I've never used light bulbs to heat enclosures and it's always been fine. I use either ceramic heat emitters (although they can be dangerous) or panels. I do understand the light bulbs have good projection of heat but surely this is only a problem if ur cage is very tall? I understand that it sucks but it doesn't feel like this somehow makes reptiles impossible to keep right?

@@shanks2872these bulbs are UVB, not heating. they simulate natural sunlight, and are important in order for reptiles and amphibians to metabolize vitamin D and calcium when being kept indoors (i am not an expert sorry).

@@shanks2872 it's possible to get heat from other source of heater but the outlaw of incandescent/halogen bulb is particularly damaging because there's no other product that specifically produce shortwave-infrared. (ceramic heater for example produces mediumwave-infrared & also warmth from the air, which is akin to ambient heat from a hot object, but not like a heat from a sun which is shortwave-infrared)

That's what happens when people don't participate in government except barely during federal elections. People whinge about how awful the government is and then don't participate but to maybe vote every 4 years. Decades upon decades of this has left only the people explicitly interested in personal power in charge.

After seeing your post a few months ago I made sure to buy a bulk order of the Arcadia heat bulbs that my shop had. So this is fantastic that Arcadia will still be making them, even tho I did notice the price had gone up quite a bit so it was a lil bit cheaper buying a bulk box. The UK has also stopped selling the older bulbs too. Thank you Arcadia for being on top of this issue. Major thanks has to go to you Kevin for bringing this subject to light (pardon the pun) So that we know what to look out for 🤗🐢🤗

LED UV A and B lights with adjustable spectrum have been around for almost a decade. Radiant ceramic heaters that screw into a bulb socket are also pretty common. Both last 12X longer than a incandescent lamp. Mine are over 8 years old.
@Google_Is_Evil
@Google_Is_Evil 22 күн бұрын
In Europe there is an exception for "specialty use" lamps. Zoomed and such are much more expensive than regular bulbs, so only pet stores stock them. I personally moved to ceramic heaters and LED for some species that don't require UVB (use reflectors to make sure that the ceramics and LEDs land on the same spot so the animal can bask in the light) and have been using mercury vapor for the ones that do need it. The fluorescents have not done it for me, the longevity and the price having to heat next to the fluorescents made me go for mercury vapor. Mercury vapor may cost more initially, but when you buy a quality lamp and have it set up properly it will last long enough for the cost to get below fluorescents.

There is a category of Infrared Lamp that reptile heat lamps would go into, except that the category STARTS at 200W according to the IR Lamp definition in the DoE document. That category mostly covers food production heat lamps and livestock heat lamps (chick brooders and such) but does not work well for smaller situations like home reptile care. If that definition were to be updated to allow for lower wattage IR Heat uses like individual animals, we would be fine. I would imagine that ZooMed, Arcadia, US ARK and others are lobbying about this - I would be *SHOCKED* if they were not, actually.

Another group, even larger than reptile keepers, that is being affected by this is Farmers, and those that keep chickens and livestock. They use heat lamps all the time. So hopefully with that larger more mainstream group along side us reptile keepers, we can get the legislators to put in a special use circumstance like some European countries have.

From what I'm reading Infrared bulbs are excluded from the ban. Those cheap chicken bulbs make great heat projector too. Grab a 250w and put it on a dimmer. Dim it down to whatever wattage you need and it'll extend the life of the bulb aswell.

Great video educating folks as to what is going on and luckily, it sounds like there will be a way forward. This is any example of how important it is that the industry has "a seat at the table" with the governments of the world through local lobbying organizations, but even as an individual in the USA, don't forget to contact your Federal Representatives to let them know. As the hobby gets more mainstream as it is now and more people speak up to what their needs are, the harder to ignor. I don't see this as the "big bad government" trying to pick on us as all, but honestly just ingnorance on their part as to all the "use cases" of these bulbs as we try to transition to more efficient standard to light up our homes.

I wanted to say that a little while back, I unsubscribed from the channel, I never had any issue with Kevin, but I just didn't agree with a lot of the decisions made, sometimes Kevin looked uncomfortable with a lot of decisions being made to keep the channel "relevant" and it seemed the channel lost its identity for a while, as the previous employee who ran the channel was hyper fixated on doing videos based on getting views instead of what Kevin truly enjoys making/talking about. What really pushed me away was the videos the employee made that ended up causing more drama than anything else. I personally didn't think they were good for the channel, and the fact things still spiralled down showed I wasn't alone in this. I am glad to see the passion back in Kevin's eyes, and the channel going back to educating people, and talking about all things reptile related. I use the food warming lights that you might see at a McDonald's or such as a source of heat / light with UVA UVB bulbs separate you just have to be careful with the distance you place the heat light because them things get super super HOT!! So you need to use a laser thermometer and verify that the tank is at the desired temperature as well as more importantly the basking spot. I don't know if those lights will also be affected but I don't see as to why because they are designed for heating food not for lighting an area

I know what you mean about "faking it" on social media. I started putting effort on my channel and it's definitely hard to keep up and pretend to be fine all the time. I like how real you are, life isn't rainbows and unicorns and I like seeing the good and the bad that happens in life. Nice to see there's a solution to the light bulb issue. I only have 1 reptile, so stocking up was easy for me but I'd definitely have been stressed right out about this if I had more reptiles.

Have loved this guy for years! Always a pleasure to see him upload and be the star of the video. I can only imagine how sad his employees that had to be unfortunately cut from NERD. Just being able to pick this guys brain even for just a day would be the coolest fucking thing in the world. His video with Clint and Lilith is Clint’s most viewed video to date!! & for good reason!! But we are in a mega recession right now. People are getting let go left and right in ALOT of trades and it’s a shame but a necessary reality we live in.

Even though LED lights will take over for common household use, I highly doubt that incandescent will completely go away. They will probably just become a specialty light source. They don’t want people using them all the time for every little thing now. The truth is, they are insanely inefficient solely as a source. And there are LED light sources that can be used for heating as well, they are just not as common place. Using them for applications like this is generally going to be considered a niche use, at least in the grand scheme of things.

I’m really interested to know about zoos, are they restricted as well? Many zoos have reptiles that require UV light and can’t provide it from a natural source, so what are they doing? It’s just another example of here’s a problem that we’ll fix by creating another problem.

That's great that a solution has been found❤ I do have a question though I wanted to contact you Kevin because I have a question about Beauty snakes as to whether or not they are rear fanged and mildly venomous I have seen Beauty snake in a pet store repeatedly strike at the glass when I came near the enclosure there was a cloudy liquidy substance on the glass and it became more abundant the more the snake struck

Strange. I live in Northern Europe and the EU is very in front reg banning light bulbs not being energy efficient (LED). But basking lights are an exemption as “special light”
@GryphonBrokewing

Farmers use heat lamps for young animals, too. Some insects (fleas, for instance) are drawn to the light & heat for a trap, if you have animals bring them into the house, too. But no, guvmint gotta guvmint so they're "doing something".

Your right. I moved from a black light ceramic heater to,a visible light spot light and my dragon was transformed moving to the basking area every morning because it sees the heat source
@curvingfyre6810
@curvingfyre6810 16 күн бұрын
There _are_ product alternatives, in ceramic elements for smaller tanks, in deep heat projectors for larger ones. Additional visible light can be easily installed next to these elements to visually indicate to the animal where the heat is. These alternatives and the LED bulbs that can be used alongside them are more energy efficient, and WAY more long lasting. I believe this is an eminently solvable problem, both on the individual carer level, and even moreso on the level of product makers, and will in the long run bring new innovation, with new combination bulbs that combine LEDs with things like ceramic elements. In the long run, this could be cheaper to produce, cheaper to buy, cheaper to power, longer lasting, and with proper dev resources, even better for the animals, as it will finally drive engineers to figure out the UV LED problem. Barring problems with old circuitry being too unstable for standard LEDs, it honestly _is_ time to phase out incandescents, globally. Personally, I was using this particular workaround before I even heard about the changing standards. I really believe LED technology is the future of all lighting solutions, this hobby included, and it's just a matter of time before it catches up. We know LEDs can provide UV now after all, we just need to dial it in to the same standards that we have with our t5s and t8s.

Basking bulbs should fall under heat generation NOT light sources. They should be under rules like a room heater instead of something like a light bulb. They may Actually see improvement if that happened

Man, this light bulb problem is majorly going to affect some of the stuff I have or want to get. The Cuvier’s dwarf caiman I got from you guys two years ago, he’s doing fine btw plus his name is Rex and he’s a bit of a goober, I feel is definitely going to be affected by this for a while since I plan on building him his own enclosure that has an outdoor space for summer time basking. I just hope that I’ll be able to find some bulbs that last until his building gets done.

I think the solution might be to make led basking lights that transmit infrared, along with regular warm light.
