Another prime example of how government regulations do not fully consider the damage they are doing before implementing changes like this. Once it became apparent they should have granted at least a temporary exemption for the animal industry until a solution could be made and readily available to consumers.

But I don't see this as THAT big of an issue, I've never used light bulbs to heat enclosures and it's always been fine. I use either ceramic heat emitters (although they can be dangerous) or panels. I do understand the light bulbs have good projection of heat but surely this is only a problem if ur cage is very tall? I understand that it sucks but it doesn't feel like this somehow makes reptiles impossible to keep right?
@bee_png4 ай бұрын
@@shanks2872these bulbs are UVB, not heating. they simulate natural sunlight, and are important in order for reptiles and amphibians to metabolize vitamin D and calcium when being kept indoors (i am not an expert sorry).

@@shanks2872 it's possible to get heat from other source of heater but the outlaw of incandescent/halogen bulb is particularly damaging because there's no other product that specifically produce shortwave-infrared. That's what happens when people don't participate in government except barely during federal elections. LED UV A and B lights with adjustable spectrum have been around for almost a decade. Radiant ceramic heaters that screw into a bulb socket are also pretty common. Both last 12X longer than a incandescent lamp. Mine are over 8 years old.
@Google_Is_Evil4 ай бұрын
In Europe there is an exception for "specialty use" lamps. Zoomed and such are much more expensive than regular bulbs, so only pet stores stock them. I personally moved to ceramic heaters and LED for some species that don't require UVB (use reflectors to make sure that the ceramics and LEDs land on the same spot so the animal can bask in the light) and have been using mercury vapor for the ones that do need it. The fluorescents have not done it for me, the longevity and the price having to heat next to the fluorescents made me go for mercury vapor. Mercury vapor may cost more initially, but when you buy a quality lamp and have it set up properly it will last long enough for the cost to get below fluorescents.

There is a category of Infrared Lamp that reptile heat lamps would go into, except that the category STARTS at 200W according to the IR Lamp definition in the DoE document. That category mostly covers food production heat lamps and livestock heat lamps (chick brooders and such) but does not work well for smaller situations like home reptile care. If that definition were to be updated to allow for lower wattage IR Heat uses like individual animals, we would be fine. I would imagine that ZooMed, Arcadia, US ARK and others are lobbying about this - I would be *SHOCKED* if they were not, actually.

Great video educating folks as to what is going on and luckily, it sounds like there will be a way forward. This is any example of how important it is that the industry has "a seat at the table" with the governments of the world through local lobbying organizations, but even as an individual in the USA, don't forget to contact your Federal Representatives to let them know. As the hobby gets more mainstream as it is now and more people speak up to what their needs are, the harder to ignor. I don't see this as the "big bad government" trying to pick on us as all, but honestly just ingnorance on their part as to all the "use cases" of these bulbs as we try to transition to more efficient standard to light up our homes.

I use the food warming lights that you might see at a McDonald's or such as a source of heat / light with UVA UVB bulbs separate you just have to be careful with the distance you place the heat light because them things get super super HOT!! So you need to use a laser thermometer and verify that the tank is at the desired temperature as well as more importantly the basking spot. I don't know if those lights will also be affected but I don't see as to why because they are designed for heating food not for lighting an area

Even though LED lights will take over for common household use, I highly doubt that incandescent will completely go away. They will probably just become a specialty light source. They don’t want people using them all the time for every little thing now. The truth is, they are insanely inefficient solely as a source. And there are LED light sources that can be used for heating as well, they are just not as common place. Using them for applications like this is generally going to be considered a niche use, at least in the grand scheme of things.

Strange. I live in Northern Europe and the EU is very in front reg banning light bulbs not being energy efficient (LED). But basking lights are an exemption as “special light”

Only trouble with a lot of cameras is the auto white balance, so it’s hard to project a comparison with video unless you lock in the color settings manually.

Agreed. Impossible to show true color without a ton of color correction

I'm confused... what is the "fix" you said you were going to talk about?

Aren't those bulbs used a lot in food preparation or restaurants where they're used to keep food fried foods hot and crispy?

Hi. Isn't ExoTerra also developing those kind of new light bulbs with LED technology? I think I heard it on Colubrid podcast of MPR. Cheers guys, muscled hugs from Peter Snakes

I know what you mean about "faking it" on social media. I started putting effort on my channel and it's definitely hard to keep up and pretend to be fine all the time. I like how real you are, life isn't rainbows and unicorns and I like seeing the good and the bad that happens in life. Nice to see there's a solution to the light bulb issue. I only have 1 reptile, so stocking up was easy for me but I'd definitely have been stressed right out about this if I had more reptiles.

im am very very confused, sure this is inconvenient to reptile keepers (i am one) but cant you use a ceramic heat emitter and a uvb only bulb?
