RIP Monty. His passing was truly as great a tragedy as the loss of the Beaudelaire's parents. He was their first choice of guardian and certainly the most suitable. Contrast him with Count Olaf or even Sir from the lumbermill.

Kumail Abbas You missed out 2 key points the series did better than the book: 1. In the book, Monty despite being kind, didn’t listen to the kids about Stephano being Olaf. In the series, he does but, it’s a huge miscommunication that prevents him from realising who Stephano was rather than his refusal to listen to the kids. Secondly, the secret code was in the cinema in the book too but, because Monty could not read the code in the book, he didn’t get Gaustav’s warning. In the series, he does understand the code and thus, successfully decodes the warning

I guess I never really thought about it that way. In the series, I felt like, even though he talked with the children more, he still didn't listen to their implications about Stephano. I couldn't remember the secret code in the book. I must have missed it. Gustav's disappearance seemed strange in the book, but I overlooked it because it was only the second book in the series and I didn't see the pattern of Count Olaf taking people out so he could assume their role. Thanks for your thoughts.

Monty is a real genius compared to Poe!

it's really fun to watch you going through the series pretty much blind. given your reaction to the spyglass thing and vfd in general i'm guessing you didn't even watch the film. one of my favorite things as an old fan of asoue is getting a fresh perspective from new fans.

When human dies in a book, we don't care. If it's an animal, we cry for 6 hours and wish that the author never wrote the book in the first place.
