"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

Nothing happened to me, but I knew at 14 years old, why tf are these 40 year old men asking children if they masturbate? How are non-licensed psychologists a thing? These men who women and children are talking about such vulnerable things about their life, relationship, sexual thoughts and urges? Yeah, a lot of sexual harassment is bound to happen. And it did, and not only were they doing that, they were being protected by the church the entire time with their “hotline” for the bishops, which was just lawyers telling them what to say. Probably a good time to remind everyone that while Jesus said absolutely nothing about gays, transgender people, or abortions, he definitely had some choice words about people who divorce and remarry. (Matthew 5:32, Matthew 19:9, Mark 10:2-12, Luke 16:18) But you'll never hear Christians going on and on about that. You'll see no bumper stickers, no protests, no Marches on Washington. And you'll have no difficulty finding a Christian baker to make a cake for your second, third, and fourth wedding. (Unless you're gay, of course.)

Even as a gay man who knows a lot of trans and non-binary people, I unfortunately gave Ana a pass the first time she showed TERF tendencies with the complaint about supposedly being called “birthing person”, but she has gone down the path of outright TERFdom, pro-police propaganda, and outright hatred of the homeless; and now I have completely abandoned TYT. They don’t even really pretend to be the “progressive network” anymore, and instead they actively do the work of the right-wing by constantly complaining about how the Democrats “ruined” California (which isn’t even untrue but it’s because the party is totally controlled by real estate capital and Silicon Valley), instead advocating for basically making life miserable for the homeless and always giving credit to the right-wing and their bullshit arguments about trans people, “woke” progressives, and telling us how we need to be more tolerant of intolerant MAGA types. Ana Kasparian even basically gave her “why I left the Left” speech a few weeks ago on a right-wing podcast, as she accused the Left of attacking her for talking about her sexual assault experience by a homeless man, when all the evidence shows that people were understandably very supportive of her, and instead she is using her sexual assault as an excuse to make life miserable for the most vulnerable and marginalized group in our society (and she only started accusing the left of attacking her for talking about her sexual assault AFTER she started receiving criticism for using TERF talking points). Just because something bad happens to you doesn’t give you the right to be hateful. There are plenty of people who have experienced crime that still believe in prison abolition and dealing with the root causes of crime. Instead, she has effectively become a Karen yelling about how the disgusting homeless people are ruining the view from her expensive Los Angeles condo (which is perfectly aligned with her class interests). If Michael Brooks (who was friends with Ana and seemed to push her further and further left) were still alive, he would be absolutely disgusted by her rhetoric. Her turn to the right makes me wonder whether she ever believed in the progressive values she once espoused. I’m not even sure it matters whether she believed in the progressive principles that she espoused or whether she was just doing what she had to do to climb the ladder of media, because the fact is that her current rhetoric is deeply harmful to trans people and homeless people and gives progressives the excuse to support hateful policies.

The quote about the path of history being long but always bending towards justice does NOT mean there are never reversals or backtracking at times and in certain places, or that it it can ONLY ever go forward. MLK was around to see rights for many groups in Europe, for Japanese people in America, etc get stripped away temporarily in wwii, he saw up close the south regressing, etc. he OBVIOUSLY intended for that quote to mean that even though there WILL be times like this where things move backwards, eventually the forward steps will win out, and over the course of history, even though the path has ups and down, things are overall trending towards justice. It's an optimistic statement that even though we took 2 steps back, we will inevitably take 3 more steps forward.

@@belladonna5012 It doesn't explain it, though. Because gay acceptance went down in all three demographics. A couple of years ago I watched an interview of RuPaul and when asked what he thought about drag being so mainstream now and what that said about society he said he definitely didn’t think it would be forever. He’s in his 60s and explained that, throughout the decades, he’s seen windows of time where society becomes more open/accepting but that those windows inevitably close again, eventually. A great example of this (which I think Ru might have used himself) was the social liberalization of the 1970s and how it was followed by a period of reactionary conservatism, which rolled back a lot of those social changes, in the 80s.

And democrats in power will NOT deny those claims as wrong or unacceptable. The act may not be happening everywhere right now, but with progressives there is no gray area so I guess you can say this is our gray area we won’t stand for. Since Trump, these and many other vile views have seen massive increases in public support amongst the right, and it's also had a spill-over effect to conservatives in other countries including Canada, Mexico, the UK, France and many others. _Trump_ did this.

Recently however, we have schools being forced to display the 10 commandments. I do agree we should focus on stem. Forcing religious text instead of making the curriculum better doesn't do that.

I disagree. This is not the Republican voters or the party getting worse - they were never good on this issue. This is Republican voters falling in line with their party on the latest wedge issue. For some reason, the Republican party has decided, that going back to hating on LGBTQ+ people is a winning strategy (I am absolutely certain, that they are mistaken) and since they have the most bigoted, most loyal and least critically thinking voters, it's not surprising, that we see a massive shift. The amount of Republicans accepting gay rights before was not really an indication, that they were particularly strong advocates for gay rights, just that it wasn't as heavily politicized an issue. Now that it's a weaponized issue once again, most of them just fall in line - but importantly not all of them. Those numbers are still a lot better than they were, back when they last tried to weaponize bigotry against queer people, some Republicans have actually shifted on the issue and are not shifting back so easily. All-in-all I think the heavy focus on these issues is a massive miscalculation by the Republicans. It works, sadly, on a local and state level - much to the detriment of queer people - but as a general election issue it's dead in the water.
