I went to Houston, Texas to witness a reunion between the 442nd RCT and the "Lost Battalion". I spoke with George Sakato who helped break thru the German lines after his friend was killed by a grenade. He said that the real heroes were the ones that died on the battlefield even through he received a Medal of Honor at that battle. My father told me about the battle and the Fox company that he led was part of the rescue but, "I" Company and "K" Company were the ones that broke thru and rescued the "Lost Battalion:.He said the reason why the 442nd RCT was used so often because it achieved results and the better you are the more you get used.

It was unfortunate the 442nd came under the command of General Dahlquist in France, many believe he was a racist who did not want the 442nd and used them as canon fodder and wasted too many Nisei lives. There is a story how Colonel Singles who commanded the 442nd during the battle for the Lost Battalion met the general after the war at army division review and refused to shake his hand in front of the whole review and only saluted the uniform as protocol.

My father told me the story when a white officer was concerned that the 442nd was having a high mortality rate to General Dahlquist response was "they're expendable"! So when General Dahlquist passed away and his coffin passed in front of him, my dad turned his back.

In the fields of war, where freedom fought A regiment of Nisei soldiers stood With courage and honor, they valiantly wrought Their duty for a country that misunderstood For in the midst of war, amidst the fray Their loyalty was questioned, their honor besmirched By one who held a view, a bias to sway General Dahlquist, his prejudice he'd lurched The Nisei soldiers heard the call To fight for a land that was their own And yet, they faced a wall Of racism and hate, a seed that's sown But they marched on, with purpose and might Through fire and rain, through smoke and blood For they knew that in the end, what's right Would triumph, and their courage would flood For though General Dahlquist held his view And others saw them as a threat The Nisei soldiers proved what's true That their courage and honor, they'd never forget So let us remember the Nisei soldiers' plight And honor their sacrifice, their valor and might For they fought with a courage that shines so bright And showed us that in the face of hate, we can always unite.

I am concerned that "Historians" pretend the 442nd in France as only being in the South. As if the extreme heavy combat in the North Eastern corner of France by the 442nd didn't happen. The Champagne campaign was RR till they had to go back to Italy to spearhead the Gothic Line Breakthrough in April, 1945.

It was no picnic in the South. That same campaign is where Audie Murphy won his CMH and another purple heart.

Amidst the turmoil of World War II, A regiment of soldiers stood so true, Nisei Americans, born and bred, To their country, their loyalty they pled. For though their nation saw them with distrust, Their courage and bravery never rusted, And they fought for freedom and justice, Their hearts and minds filled with righteousness. Through fire and smoke, they marched on, Their courage shining like the dawn, And with each battle, they proved their worth, For freedom, they fought with all their mirth. Their flag, the stars and stripes, they waved, A symbol of freedom, for which they braved, And in their hearts, the love of their land, A loyalty that, with blood, they'd stand. So let us remember their sacrifice, Their bravery and honor, never to be priced, For in the face of hate and suspicion, They showed us the power of loyalty's conviction. And though their story is one of pain, Their courage and spirit forever remain, A testament to the strength of the human will, And a reminder of freedom's promise still.
