“Not Available” is my most favorite Residents’ album. To each, their own.

at 13:50 you said that the whole concept of the Commercial Album is that it's un-commercial... "because a 60-second song is completely unmarketable." This wasn't actually the concept. The real concept was, that these were supposed to be The Residents' idea of little 60-second advertising jingles for television commercials. So, because these songs were (supposedly) suitable for commercial jingles, The Residents were saying these 60-second tunes were their MOST marketable songs, not their least marketable. At the time, The Residents were being described as noncommercial music, so The Commercial Album proves The Residents can make music for commercials.

Constantinople and Blue Rosebuds have amazing poetry, but I just can't get enough of Krafty Cheese (please, plants, be careful growing towards the sun). edit: Fun Fact about the commercial album, to complete the concept, they bought one minute commercial slots on FM radio and played the whole album piecemeal intermixed with the regular commercials. Can you imagine listening to as advert for a new car and then hearing a Residents song?

Mark of the Mole is one of their greatest, it has very imaginative soundscapes, and fine atmosphere. I agree about Not Available, at first it doesn't seem remarkable at all. But it grows slowly on you, and after many listens it becomes musically pleasant.

We are pretty much in agreement with most of these records. I do like the album, Not Available. It has some very cool moments.

you have a major residents record collection and dont like not available? Thats crazy to me that album is a masterpiece in my eyes.

Case Esparros to each their own. I own a lot of the essentials but never really got Not Available or had interest in it.

Give it time. "Not Available" (Edwena) is really their Masterpiece, as Case Esparrros mentioned. It is the closest to Prog Rock they got. You were right with Duck Stab, Spectalucar master piece. Give it a few more spins. You will find the real beauty. If you like "Blue Rosebuds", you will love the whole "Not Available". Guarantee!

I'm a huge fan of The Residents as well, and, like you, I haven't played any of their stuff for quite some time. "Fingerprince" is my favorite early album of theirs, with "Duck Stab" a close second ("Blue Rosebuds" might be my fave RZ song of all time). Great video!

Definitely one of the most fascinating bands I've come across, even if I've heard very little of their material so far.

I had nearly all of those, but I sold and still selling them on discogs. I replaced them all with CD versions with extras, ''bonus'' material, new artwork and such. I enjoy listening to those more than I did with the records. No worries about searching desperately for the offending speck with a ear-pick at the slightest click, or keeping an eye on the pussycat, lest she decides to jump on the turntable while a record in playing. It has been a long time since I am through with all that.

They have so much material, music, videos, even a game. Not everything is gonna be gold, but they are very interesting.

Give MotM another chance. It is actually a very deep allegory on the relations between rich and poor nations. One of the best concept albums ever in my opinion.

I just listened to “Fingerprince” and “Babyfimgers” Compact Discs. The Long Play plus Extended Play May be my new most favorite The Residents’ albums.

Mark of the Mole holds up really well in Trump's America. Definitely check out the last track, the climax is a real masterpiece of sound design for the time.

I completely agree with your ratings of this period of The Residents. One that is missing is "Intermission" that was played during Intermission at their live shows.
