It is refreshing to know someone else who listens to Blind Mr. Jones. To know another Black Man who enjoys shoegaze music. You are discussing bands only I seem to enjoy. My friends are clueless about this great genre. We would have fun swapping stories and thoughts.

I found a Moose CD single a couple of years ago and it sounded great. I was wondering how they didn't get any airplay on radio stations at the time, 1990's. Another shoegazey find at a thrift store was a band out of Detroit called Majesty Crush. They have a shoegazey sound but an unusual set of lyrics for that kind of music.

I'm a child of the late 80's early 90's so this has brought on some memories for me.I picked up a cassette in a charity shop some years ago,it's called Precious and I think it was a charity release for an animal charity.Anyway it featured the likes of Pale Saints,House of Love,Suede,The Wonder Stuff,Lush etc. Some of the UK and Ireland viewers might be familiar with this release I think it dates from ,92.

Excellent post, Dereck. I caught Secret Flowers' first video this past weekend - excellent stuff. Gotta tune in for the second one he posted. Thanks for the shoutout! I was sent that Autumn's Grey Solace back when it came out, but it didn't really do anything for me - I don't know, maybe it reminded me a little too much of the Cocteaus. But man, that Blind Mr. Jones in the background was something special - will be seeking that one out for sure. - Bret

i too am a black male... i'm also a Hip-Hop artist... the song that inspired me to do any type of music was "When You Sleep" by My Bloody Valentine... another black guy introduced it to me in 1998... BLEW MY MIND. I'd never heard of the genre of shoegaze and it was like a baptisms. Look, thats the great thing about music, it opens your mind and emotions to new levels and people that dont listen to different types of music are only denying themselves no matter the color. one.

I don't know a whole lot about shoegaze although i saw many of the bands live at the time - in 89 i was 17, so just b4 the dance scene came along for me (late 90) i was going to see ride, bark psychosis, woodentops, house of love, etc.. there is an american independeant film called mysterious skin that has a lot of shoegaze tracks on it do you know Beyond the Wildwood dereck? its a bit b4 shoegaze per se c. 87/88 - its a lot of "C86" bands doing syd barrett tracks - thats worth a listen.

Black Metallic is a magical song. I think it is the song that actually got me into shoegaze back in the 90s. I love that you mentioned The Cure!!! Hi Dereck, I've just stumbled upon this rather old shoegaze video of yours. As a matter of fact I recently got me "Duck" by "Porto Geese" on vinyl, which definitly hits the shoegaze sound. I feel the same about labels/genres. They can both define and limit. I had no idea a lot of the music I loved was in this shoegaze category. I totally love music and much of the stuff I like is connected to the UK. I have a feeling I will be watching a lot of your videos. I may as well subscribe now. I miss my lost vinyl. I've started collecting again. I can actually study to shoegaze. I usually can't do lyrics, but I think it has to do with the sustained notes. I'm betting you've already heard of Dif Juz? If not, check out their record Soundpool. I heard their song No Motion on a 4AD compilation and had to have it. (I believe they played on Cocteau Twins records). You seem open minded to different and new sounds. Oddly enough Dif Juz was connected to dub music (not to be confused with what a lot of US people think of as dubstep). I'm talking like Jamaica meets London original dub instrumentals. It also has morphed in to many things. If you have a decent subwoofer, you may want to check out the Antisocial Crew (specifically show #252 on the GetDarker TV youtube channel). If you're not a purist about how music is presented, you will hear something you can appreciate. Lots of atmosphere and these long sets are like a journey (I couldn't even digest it all at once). It's weird that I grew up in the States, yet I keep going back to the UK (and Canada) for new music. I think it has to do with the pure passion for the music over clothing, personas and fame common in the US. I can't get enough. So lucky to stumble across your channel. I think I'll check out your Johnny Marr video next! I loved his guitar sound at age 14 or 15 and felt he was way underrated. You've got some nice tastes!

If anyone looking for shoegaze check out Coaltar Of The Deepers, songs of theirs that stand out to me are "Sarah III" and "Prophet Proved" are some highlights in my eyes, they're Japanese but will sometimes speak broken English so most of the lines you won't understand but they're my favorite band check them out.

Glad to see some older people get into the Shoegazing genre, as it is a lot more underappreciated now, than it was in the nineties. Some bands of the genre I recommend are: Difference Engine, The Curtain Society, Sway, Fleeting Joys, Bailter Space, Pasteboard, Stella Luna, and Aerial Love Feed. There are a ton more I could post, but I didn't want to bog down the comment section with half a webpage of recommendations. Are you into anything Post-punk? My favorite band is "Have a Nice Life", a highly-underrated band, which I implore you to check out if you are into that genre. Also, do you like Slowcore at all? Bands like Codeine, Bluetile Lounge, Slint, or Red House Painters might be worth your time as well.
