Wrapping my head around "letting it go" is proving to be quite difficult. Looking good buddy!

You mentioned 400 cow days to the acre… what is your stocking rate on your place without feeding hay?
@runningtfarmsnc2 ай бұрын
We have successfully grazed 365 days per year stocked at 1000 lbs of live animal weight per 1.3 acres. As we continue to improve our land and genetics I believe we can get very close to 1000 lbs of of live animal weight per acre.

Looks great! Any poisonous snakes in the tall grass? Wear special footwear for that? Thanks!
@runningtfarmsnc2 ай бұрын
I don’t worry about snakes. We have copperheads and timber rattlers along with a whole host of non venomous snakes but I don’t pay much attention to them. I regularly see 6-7 ft long black snakes but I just let them do their thing! Live and let live.✌️

Good evening, Josh! I’m harvesting 90% of my almost pure stand of eastern Gamagrass. Will I harm the grass?
@runningtfarmsnc2 ай бұрын
No sir not in my experience. You just need to make sure that it’s given proper recovery before being grazed again, and that you are not leaving your cattle with access to the prior grazed areas for more than probably 2-3 days. Eastern Gamma will start to make regrowth very quickly after grazing and grazing this new growth before it’s fully recovered would be over grazing and extremely hard on the plant.

This is awesome Josh! Anything in particular you did besides the normal UHDG timed rotations to control the fescue?
@runningtfarmsnc2 ай бұрын
No sir just Nonselective grazing followed by appropriate recovery.

Is that season long stockpile good enough for fall calving cows compared to forage that’s been grazed one or 2 times through the growing season?
@runningtfarmsnc2 ай бұрын
Our predominantly fescue pastures season long stockpile is good enough for fall calving cows but in order to make the best use of our grass we have moved to May-June calving. We have one small group of fall calving cows that this will be the last year of fall calving for us. Lowering the nutritional requirements of our cows during the time of year when we aren’t growing any grass, and quality is declining just seemed to make more and more sense to us so that’s what we chose to do.
@zhostetler32 ай бұрын
@@runningtfarmsnc I agree. I like both spring and fall calving just trying to figure out the best way to take on this total grazing without too many bumps in the road. So you total graze half your farm and let the other half grow all year then strip graze it in the winter?
@tireddad65412 ай бұрын
So this field will be grazed in November-Dec? Then next year?
@runningtfarmsnc2 ай бұрын
We will graze it sometime this fall/winter after a killing frost.

@@runningtfarmsncwill you non selective graze next summer as well

I think wha is going on is you are massively building organic matter that is loaded with amino acids, amino peptides and amino sugars and once these levels get high things really take off even to the point that it could be abused for several years and not hurt it simply from all the reserves. Way to go Josh !!
@runningtfarmsnc2 ай бұрын
@@timshirk6261Yes it will be on the table for grazing during the 2025 growing season.
@tireddad65412 ай бұрын
@runningtfarmsnc Thanks, J Elizondo explained some of the reasons. And he has worked in plenty of contexts, knows it differs accordingly. He has to supplement with protein in Florida, for example. And use a compost tea.
