Yes! It drives me nuts when people talk about the "Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge" as if it was meant as a genuine "beauty hack." As someone that was a teenager in my freshman/sophmore year of high school when this challenge was big, it was about making fun of Kylie, not mimicking her.

@@Princessmimiii I was referring to the extreme iterations of it that largely made up the online "Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge." Hey there, I'm a nurse practitioner. Just want to say that yes, this lip cupping with a shot glass can cause permanent facial paralysis. The bucchal branch of the facial nerve circles the lips. If the glass gets sucked in and damages this nerve, the damage can be permanent, leading to numbness and paralysis

ahah "she's literally me" did that thing when i was about 14(?) intended ironically and out of curiosity, not on camera, using a plastic cap from my face wash. it didn't make my lips big but it had stuck to my face because it was flexible so the suction was strong even when i stopped sucking air in. i managed to rip it off my mouth and ended up with an instant grey bruise around my mouth looking like Homer Simpson. couldn't attend school(to avoid bullying) for two weeks till it disolved.

Permanent nerve damage from messing with the lip and jaw area is 100% possible. Getting that from a lip challenge is unlikely but possible - and nerve damage is often permanent. I has surgery to correct an overbite over a decade ago and my nerves were stretched as a result of the procedure. My bottom lip is still partially numb from it today.
@grapeyard1778
@grapeyard1778 Жыл бұрын

@Curiefeld
@Curiefeld Жыл бұрын
@grapeyard1778 oops, forgot to reply. Specifically I have numbness on my lower lip and jaw. The numbness on my jaw is pretty minor - I've lost about 30% of my sensation there. Not a big deal. The lips are worse. The left side is worse than the right. It's not 100% numb - I can feel it if I touch it - but I have lost about 70% of sensation. Overall, it's not a big deal. I just need to make sure I don't accidentally leave food there during and after eating, as I can't always feel if I have food on my face 🙃. A napkin fixes that issue.

It’s upsetting that a child would have to deal with all that. Like not just getting the filler done at that time, but being constantly asked about her appearance by the media. I did this in like 2013 with a water bottle one night, before it was a thing just because I liked the sensation of a fat lip. I thought it was funny. I didn't really think anything of it until after a bit of messing around I had a bruise above and below my lips. I was so embarrassed and it lasted for a few days, I had to cover it with concealer. I was only like 15 but I haven't done it since because I'm traumatised by the bruise. I work in a nursery and you randomly get 2-3 years old creating vacuums on their lips all the time with cups just because it's a funny thing to do. I'm constantly removing the cups from their faces because I'm terrified about what marks they're gonna leave on their faces, but some trends just don't die no matter the age.

Hi @JamesWelsh Great video. Blood clots are very serious if they are absorbed into your body, they may travel to your lung causing it to collapse, this puts stress on your heart, you could have a heart attack. If it moves to your heart, it can cause blockage & a heart attack. If it moves to your brain, you could have a stroke. These all can be fatal. Clots need to be dissolved. It takes months to recover, with daily injections at first, with blood thinners & constant blood tests to check your levels. I really appreciate you showing how dangerous these stupid challenges are. She’s gorgeous and fits the standards of “beauty” for this generation. I’m doing everything to boost her confidence now, and praising her for her brain and talents… just praying she doesn’t ever feel the need to resort to stupid crap like this. Cause; wtf 😢😭

I used the Candylipz lip plumbing device 😢I had to get rid of it because I had terrible bruising. It lasted so long I thought it would be permanent

I remember doing that in the 80s. It wasn't a lip challenge or anything, i was just a dumb kid suctioning a cup on my mouth. My mom got so angry and i got in trouble

The crazy thing is, we know what the Kylie Jenner challenge is?? As a younger zoomer, I remember the Kylie lip challenge, as do most people my age that I've talked to. We SHOULD know better, but apparently we don't.

Oh boy! I can't wrap my head around the appeal of this challenge. I can't imagine it feels good to suction your lips 👄

I use to do it with juice bottles for fun as a kid (not for the challenge, and not for more than a couple of seconds because it would start to get painful). It was just something amusing. I've never done it to the point of bruising or even noticeable swelling, and I'm horrified there were people out there who did

@@raerohan4241same here. But even as a kid when this became a trend I didn't do it (even tho I did it before for fun like you) because I knew this was too harmful and dumb

It's so bad. I have really thin lips. Like REALLY thin, they type that get made fun of. And every week I think, that's it, I'm going to go get lip fillers!!! But I'm poor so I end up talking myself out of it. But it's so hard to not internalize what is constantly seen as beautiful and feeling like shit when you don't have certain features. I had really hoped things would get better with time but due to tiktok, instagram, and social media in general, it really does seem to be getting so much worse.

@@Olia-ch-ka Remember many so called influencers have no real fashion sense or art degree. Really the kind of person I would not trust with my garderobe or makeup. Btw thin lips actually look very delicate which is why gradient lips are so popular in asia. I predict it will eventually come to the west with everyone consuming so much korean content.

@@chip2389 Koreans generally have very plump lips and their make up emphasizes large lips the majority of the time. I dont think you understand just how thin my lips are, or just how small and thin lips can be. There physically isnt room on my lips to do gradient make-up.

When I was in my early teens, I heard a story about someone getting a near-fatal blood clot from a hickey. I've been terrified of suction/vacuum pressure anywhere on my body ever since (I'm getting better about it, I know a little window suction cup won't hurt me). I don't think I would have tried it anyways, but hooray for odd fears saving me from a risky trend.

My friends and I were doing the shot glass lips thing in the ‘90s for laughs. I don’t like her, but I don’t think anyone can blame Kylie Jenner just because that generation’s version was named after her.

I sort of agree that it wasn't necessarily a beauty trend, except for the fact that several brands sold devices that you either create suction with to create larger lips OR electric devices that create suction for larger lips.

Just an FYI, Kylie sold the majority stake to Coty later on, she didn't partner with them when she launched, sorry to correct you 💜. I love that Curel stuff!

Seed beauty who also own Colourpop were first right? Hence why the lip kits were the same formula for a long while. Then the rebrand was due to the coty sale and new formulas and hidden by the ‘clean beauty’ claim!

I used to do it for like a minute or two with a plastic little cap and always check it every like 20 seconds. But then I realized I just simply do not care enough to waste time looking silly. I don’t even bother with lip plumper glosses. I got what I got, I’m not worrying about it. If I want to get filler someday I will do that, but I really don’t feel like I want it bad enough to deal with the cost or potential dissatisfaction.

My daughter did something similar once with a bottle cap that she was randomly sucking on when she was like 8 or 9 (didn't have anything to do with the challenge, she was just being silly like kids do), but it was a big enough bottle cap that when she sucked on it, it covered her chin as well and she came crying to me about it, with a HUGE purple hickey on her chin. It wasn't too dark, I don't think she did much damage, but you could totally see it. It was kind of funny, kind of horrifying. Glad she didn't use something small enough to get stuck on her lips! Don't think she ever did that again either! (She's 13 now and too cool for dumb stuff, apparently)

I had a non-cosmetic lip surgery done around the time when the Kylie lip challenge was big and my lips were extremely bruised and swollen for a few weeks after. Early highschool age, I went to school and people genuinely thought that I'd done the challenge and it 'went wrong' and wanted to know what I did to get my lips like that so they could replicate it and post it to facebook.... it definitely was a trend driven by shock value instead of beauty standards imo.

You're mistaken about the brand's founding company. Coty acquired Kylie Cosmetics in late 2019. I believe Seed beauty helped start the brand.
