I had the honor of attending a Gil Scott Heron performance at the historic Tampa Theater in 89 or 90. My 3 friends and I were the only white faces in the packed venue. He made it to Tampa but his band and equipment did not. So, with only a borrowed electric piano, he gave us an impromptu and unique show. He was nothing short of outstanding.

I first saw him on TV on the Old Grey Whistle Test in the UK in the 70s, he was playing his song Johannesburg with Brian Jackson. I then went to see him play at tge Hammersmith Odeon comcert venue in London. One the way back from work, I bumped into him on the tube (underground train) and managed to say hi to him and tell him I was really looking forward to seeing him play the next day. He was a very special musician, poet and communicator. He inspired a generation of people, despite not being a superstar as people call them. He was a down-to-earth person who had a deep understanding of the political and social reality of our times back then, which is just as relevant today as it ever was.

I’m a huge fan of Gil Scott-Heron. Not only did he make music that slaps, he dropped knowledge. I first became aware of Gil in the late nineties while doing a stint in prison in Sydney Australia. It was a great time for me in terms of discovery. I read Malcolm X’s biography, read Pimp by Ice Berg Slim, and my mate hooked me up with a CD player with a compilation CD which featured The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, as well as a personal favourite The Bottle, plus Tim Buckley’s Night Hawkin’, Kinky Friedman… a song Nelson Mandela listened to on his Walkman while incarcerated at Robbin Island but KZbin censors don’t like the title: “Ride Em J_w B_y” a song BTW which is about the trials and tribulations of the Jewish people since time immemorial. It is a country song that uses the life of a cowboy as a metaphor for the Holocaust and the wandering diaspora. Long story short these books and tracks opened my eyes and made me start acting right and taking pride in myself. I started to like the man I saw in the mirror. Music and literature are very powerful. They can break you out of the worst prison ever, the prison of the mind.

Love this man. Everything he said is so true. This needs to be taught in every school. They intentionally leave the truth like always out of the history books as usual to suit them. We need more people like him with guts to speak out with the truth and not with lies. The truth is always swept under the carpet. They need to rewrite the history books with the truth about everything.

I had the fortunate opportunity to see Scott-Heron live at the Rose Bowl for an Earth Day concert. I had an all access backstage pass and shook Gil's hand after his performance. The music talent that day and night was amazing. CSN, Donovan, Stevie Nicks, Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder along with other high ranking performers. I wasn't allowed to get near Stevie Wonder although I tried. Bob Dylan stood in his tailor the entire time he was at the Rose Bowl. The rest I was able to hang out with and came very close to having a fist fight with David Crosby. What an experience. They don't schedule concerts like that anymore. The current talent is god awful compared to what was going on back then.
