everything from the background music to the visuals to the way Giorgio describes things is absolutely beautiful. I love these videos. It’s amazing to think how much weight these might have in 20-30 years from now to teach even the next generation about these amazing cars

You need to let Piola take charge and determine the direction of some more videos, he's brilliant, a wealth of knowledge and experience. Amazing video.

I have an excellent book written by John Tipler, Lotus 78 and 79, The Ground-Effect Cars. Well worth a read. It covers not just those 2 cars, but the March 701, the Chapparal and Brabham fan cars. Along with the various Lotus' before and after the 79. The March 701 is particularly interesting as Tony Rudd was so close there, if he'd put an end plate on those stubby wings. The whole of F1 history from 1970 could of been so different. You even see that every modern airliner has vertical end plates on their wingtips. And it's the same principal, just to stop the bleeding of air from the high to low pressure sides of the wing. The story ends with the type 88 that saw Chapman so disenchanted with F1 he just gave up. His treatment over the 88 along with the De Lorean scandal, resulted in his fatal heart attack at the end of 1982.

The Venturi Effect is the same thing as the Bernoulli Effect. Low pressure air between two objects (in this case, the floorpan of the car and the ground) will cause the two objects to be suctioned together. Simple science made this car so amazing. The Lotus 79 was to 1970s F1 generation what the McLaren MP4-4 was to the 1980s F1 generation.

Do one on the Cooper F1 car. In my opinion its the most revolutionary since it was the first ever to win with the engine behind the driver ultimately making every car have the same layout the next season
@KayoMichiels5 жыл бұрын
Not really revolutionary... there were GP cars from the 30's that had their engine in the back (Auto Union Type A to D)

It took a lot longer for the rest of the grid to catch up. Ferrari didn't switch over until 1960 for instance.

I read somewhere that as advanced as the Lotus 78 was from the rest of the field, the Lotus 79 was that much more advanced from just the 78.
@hughcdavies5 жыл бұрын
The 78 was a great car, Mario won more races than Nikki in 77. However he DNF'd too often as the tyres couldn't take the additional load for the full race. Kiddies, pit stops were very rare then. The 79 was another step and Mario could of easily been a double champ.

I would say that the Tyrell 019 of 1990 has had a much bigger and lasting impact on F1 car design. Harvey Postlethwaite's desiign was the first car to race with the raised nose concept which has been used by every tean for 29 years with no change insight. Ground effects only lasted from 1978 till the end of 1982 .

For the 1970s, it was gorgeous. Certainly better than today's cars. But in my opinion, it's second only to the McLaren-Honda MP4-4.
