My entire life I have been baffled by Corben's work. NOTHING looks like Corben. It looks like he was taking photographs in some alternate comic book universe. The incredible lighting and shading of his creatures, characters and environments just never made sense in the best kind of way. Sorcery! Amazing stuff, thanks for sharing.

Have you seen the original Den short film or comic, the earth character IS him! (Played by him)

I always thought the same thing. His art looked like a peak into a whole new special world.

One of the things Corben did that most artists avoided was using hard edges for cast shadows. Many artists, especially in comics, avoid them because they can be confusing and detract from clarity. But he had the massive skills and highly developed imagination to use them as powerful design elements and modify them the way he wanted. Using them in the highly creative way he did (with that sort of claymation aesthetic he always had) created that better-than-photoreal effect he was the master of. He also made clay models of some character heads and had a collection of little animal skulls, and would set up his light and draw directly from them for lighting and perspective etc. I'm sure like me most of the viewers (and all you Kayfabe guys) got your info the same way I did on his techniques-we learned nothing about how he worked until the Richard Corben Art Book came out, when it said only that he used airbrushes, and in particular the Paasche AB turbine. I know I'm not the only one who ran out and bought airbrushes and learned to cut friskets, and how to assemble and use that annoyingly complicated and noisy turbine airbrush! And it wasn't for another deacade or two till we learned he hardly ever actually used airbrushes-his black and white work was mostly some combination of ink, pencil and charcoal, and his color work was mostly oil paint. No wonder I could never get those kind of effects in airbrush! But I was getting them in pencil. I learned all I know about shading and lighting (and a lot more ) from Corben and Frazetta. And most of it intuitively, just from absorbing so much of their work. It was many more years before I would learn the names for things like hard / soft / lost edges, shadow mapping (grouping them all into masses and outlining them) and all the rest. I just learned it by trying to draw like them.

Thank you for featuring this book! I’m a Corben fan and Corben collector but I’m also a working class father of two and I can’t afford to buy a set of these volumes for myself at the price they go for. Seeing those pages was an incredible experience. THANK YOU.

Not that you'd be able to find a copy no matter how much money you had... I know, I've been searching. I suppose it's my new Holy Grail.
@russworks28822 жыл бұрын
Turns out that as incredible as we knew Corben's art is, it's even better. When he was selling his originals, often the media listed were Sharpie and gray pencil. (The former has got to be why some of the originals cloud up around solid black areas.) I've also seen later pictures of him working with a Micron. The medium was not the reason he was so good; he probably could've drawn masterworks with charcoal briquettes.

They should re print this one, I was lucky enough to grab a copy (only €100) and to travel to Angouleme and enjoy the exhibition in his honor, Great video!!!!

Wow. Thank you guys for showcasing this book. I looked on Ebay and there is one copy for almost $4K! Incredible. The first time I remember encountering Corben's artwork was in Garth Ennis' Punisher: The End and I was pleased to see that they included 2 pages of that story in this book. The man was unlike ANY other artist out there and I feel that people just do not talk about him enough.

Corben would do separate overlays for colors. The one you were looking at was the background vs the final with all the layers.

To answer the question that you had concerning the Blackthorne Twisted Tales illustrations, they are from the prose novel that Bruce Jones wrote 1987. RC did several pieces for the book.

That was a real treat to see, my all time favorite artist in its original unaltered glory. Thank you for bringing this in Chris. And Jim & Ed, I second the notion to make a Corben playlist. Here would be some good additions to cover in the future: Bloodstar (for old school Corb) and House on the Borderlands (for epic late period work). But ANY chance to look at Corben is a good time!

You guys are on the right track with Blackthorne Comics. Blackthorne was established in 1985 by Steve Schanes and his wife Ann Fera, both formerly associated with Pacific Comics which had gone out of business in 1984. They did well financially until 1989 when they paid a big ass licensing fee to adapt Michael Jackson's MOONWALKER movie to comics. The comic flopped and they lost a lot of money from which they never recovered. By 1990 they folded the tent.

@russworks28822 жыл бұрын
First comics I know of is "Monsters Rule" that originally appeared in the fanzine Voice of Comicdom, just prior to Rowlf. It was reprinted in the underground comics version of Weirdom . Another really early piece was Tales of the Plague that was reprinted in ugs and in an 80's album reprint. The early breakout has gotta be Rowlf, which was in Undergrounds, Heavy Metal and Catalan collections. It still looks brilliant.
