Several years ago, some of my mates and myself, were in southern france. It was a cool time, lot of fun, good food, beatiful women....maybe a little bit to hot for me, cause me type of skin is really bright. I easy getting a sunbrand. So, I was playing some American football with my buddies and some other dudes from our camping place and really hurring my elbow(something around the joint capsule). Really painful, couldn't move my arm and so on. I decided to go to an hospital. Waiting at least for round about two and half hour, just to get to a room,where i've waited for just another hour and half before i see a doc. There was this bloke in the entrance hall, coming in very later than me. He fainted suddenly, totally collapsed ( my thoughts in this moment were: i hope this guy's coming trough)and was taking care of immediatelly. As i sat there, no AC in the waiting room,of course, by a outdoor temperature of at least 104 ° F( 40 ° C), he suddenly walked out with a bandage on his arm, literally whistling. Long story short: i'm completely agree with Karl on his hospital experience ;)

May be wrong but I think it's more a term of endearment for women rather than mates. I'd never call a guy chuck but guys up here mostly older call lasses chuck, my dad calls his mam chuck
