100% agree with everything you say there Ben. Well done for raising awareness of the issue. I’ve seen one lad in our age group with an horrific injury sustained three weeks ago whilst wearing these. Clubs in our league are now starting to take responsibility and put blanket bans on them but they really should be being led by the governing bodies.

The grip socks are horrendous also. Seen others use them. Their feet get wet either from weather or sweat and then yive got this hard rubber on your sock. That just creates horrific blisters. Not just small rubbing, taking sliced skin here.

I am currently a grassroots referee reffing all age groups under 18 and I can't do anything about these excuses for shinpads and only offer guidance. My advice is this. ' A person's bones are not fully formed until around the age of 20-21 years of age and a young person has more of the softer cartilage in their legs therefore this needs protecting MORE rather than less. These professional players are being paid to wear these things and they also have the best medical expertise right at pitchside whereas most grassroots players do not.' The governing bodies need to do something now and at the very least ban them at every age under 18. They are not only a fashion, they are dangerous.

Spot on - had a few lads turn up with these. We've had to send them away - they're dangerous

I find that shinguards are useful in the lower levels of the game for protection. It should be mandated for youth to have properly sized shinguards. On the other hand, adults shouldn’t have to wear shinguards since they rarely ever get kicked in the shins. If they actually took player safety in account, they’d force us all to wear ankle pads and that would not be good for the game imo.

Do grip socks actuLly do anything?

They helped me stop getting skin tears and blisters. I don't know if there's any performance increase but they have given me some comfort. Just don't buy the over expensive ones, there are some affordable ones that you can find online.

We’ve heard very mixed feedback, from “don’t make any difference” to “they helped my boots feel less loose or riders rubbing” Think it depends on individual preference!
