In the opening days of WW1, Unterseeboots, better known simply as U-boats, proved to be a potent and constant threat to Allied ships, with one U-boat identified as SM U-9 infamously killing nearly 1,500 British sailors in less than an hour by sinking three armoured British cruisers on September 22, 1914.

The ramming technique worked to a degree, HMT Olympic has a U-Boat kill to her name for ramming it and was the only Oceanliner to have done so.

On the morning of May 12, 1918, the R.M.S. Olympic (the sister ship of the Titanic) spotted a German U-boat, U-103, preparing to attack. The Olympic turned on the U-boat and rammed it before the boat could flood it's torpedo tubes. One of Olympic's screws sliced open the hull of U-103 and it sank. After the collision, the Olympic steamed away like a boss.

I think the German captain that sunk the Lusitania probably wouldn't have believed that it was a civilian ship of you told him so. You wouldn't go on a cruise to Somalia after all or take a touristic bus tour through Syria. The people that went on that ship despite the many warnings must have been complete idiots or they were purposely kept ignorant so that the US would have a good reason to join the war.

The Uboat issue with the British refusing to admit the problem sounds very similar to what the US went through with aircraft carriers and the ability to sink a ship with an airplane. Billy Mitchell proved that it was possible and in February 1921 in a now famous demonstration named Project B: Anti-ship bombing demonstration, that floored the US naval command who insisted it couldn’t be done. It was a success. And quite possibly kept us from losing WW2

The periscope wasn't connected to a sub's life support, nor was it a critical part of the sub, just very important. At any rate, you'd think that the sub skipper would immediately order the periscope to be lowered the second he saw a bag get dropped over it.

@Riceball01
@Riceball01 5 жыл бұрын
@@2MeterLP That's because most machineguns, at least during WWI, were large, heavy, bulky things and not really well suited for use on a small boat. The few more portable shoulder fired ones were still fairly heavy, had limited ammo capacity, and would have had pretty fierce recoil to contend with. You're only going to get 1 or 2 well aimed shots on full auto, all other shots are just going to go in the air and this would be even worse in a small boat bobing up and down in the water. Another thing, machineguns typically are less accurate than a rifle since their primary job is suppression and not pin point accuracy. Tha and their range wouldn't be any better than that of a rifle either so you would still have to get really close to have any chance of hitting.

My favorite bit of trivia about WWI U-boats is that they were so primitive that they really didn’t have a ballast system. When they’d fire a torpedo the change in weight and the force of it firing would send the U-boat bobbing around like a child’s bath toy. To get the ship back under control the captain would order the majority of the crew to all run to the side of the ship that had just fired the torpedo to offset the weight some. Then he would direct the crew to run to this end and that one until the ship was once again balanced and under control. The idea of this captain standing in the middle of the ship yelling “RIGHT! NOW LEFT! NO, NOW TO THE BOW!” And the crew of young men literally falling over each other to run as fast as they could to one end of the ship, then the other, as the ship rolled and bobbed madly is absolutely hilarious! I keep imagining it as an old filmstrip with zany music played over it.

Oh, and it’s hard for us to understand just how blind these u-boats were when they weren’t on the surface. The seafloor hadn’t really been mapped like it is now, so often they didn’t even know how deep the water was when they dove. I read about one incident, in the North Sea I believe, where the waves were so rough and dangerous that the U-Boat was forced to dive despite being in German waters. So they go in to a dive, when suddenly there’s a kind of grinding noise. Before they can figure out what was going on the ship starts violently waving up and down. Crew members were getting injured from the motion slamming them to the floor, then up again, and since they were in a dive, everyone was being pulled to the bow. They eventually figured out that where they were the Sea was unexpectedly shallow. So when they went in to the dive, the bow hit seafloor and the whole back half of the ship was sticking up out of the water and was at the mercy of these massive and violent waves. I can only imagine how awful that must have been considering that everyone on board was likely incredibly seasick on top of the injuries from being slammed around.

important to note - the boats only submerged to hide, and periscopes were used to see if it was safe to surface in order to fire their weapons. yes, they operated on the surface, and at night, sailed on the surface. also, in wwi, the allies started attacking the ships that resupplied the uboats. this, along with traveling in convoys, was effective.

On the topic of sea-lions, the Swedish marine trained seals to tag submarines with a tracking device during the early cold war. The seals were brilliantly well suited to the task given training, but when the admiralty came for a demonstration most of the seals got stuck with their harness on the targets and divers had about 40 minutes to get down there and cut them lose lest they drown. In the end the project lost its funding, but due to material shortcomings, not due to the seals. Experts have later stated that had the project stayed active we might have actually caught some of the submarines detected in our archipelagos. They also tried using birds to make it easier to spot the periscopes but they pigeons got eaten by preying birds due to being too tired during the return flight, the two eagles did not take to captivity with one ending up dead and the other released.

I didn't think it would be difficult for sea lions to find subs, but what practical use could they be in WW1? No tracking technology existed. Plus a ship would have to slow to a crawl to release them and wait for them to return. If a sub was nearby that would be the worst time to slow down and hang around.

I've never quite understood the need to fight over the Falklands, but I also think that military organizations with big epaulets (looking specifically at Argentina during the era) are highly ineffective.

I wondered about some sort of 'fouler': basically a net with a large float attached. When it snagged on the 'scope it both marks it properly for shooting it and if they try to evade by submerging either it causes such drag...all we have to do is wait for it to surface - assuming the prop / control surfaces aren't immobilised because - well: 'fouling'. Alternative: the device causes such drag / weird upward forces it compromises the seals flooding the command area - as U-Boats weren't a refined design likely it would not have taken much.

@BarneyMiller you would just slide the gun across the railing so you could easily make the kind of slow consistent adjustments from 2 slowly moving ships it wouldn't be to different to shooting from the inside of a car but probably a little easier because of having much more room also WW1 era rifles are very similar to hunting rifles used today so unless your shooting something more then 200m away accuracy should be no concern shooting the periscope would shatter the mirror likely blinding the submarine so it couldn't attack but they would still be able to breath through it and navigate back to safe waters with a compass so you wouldn't actually kill the submarine but with the hammer you could in theory seal the periscope shut forcing the submarine to surface properly to breath that is assuming the submarine doesn't just submerge when your smith starts hammering away at it since it would take a while to make a seal airtight enough to stop the submarine from breathing so as much as i like the hammer i think shooting it is still a better idea as it is a lot easier

Couldn't they chuck a barrel of alcohol (or other flammable substance) near it? They could bring back the catapult for the barrels. Once a barrel was in the general area of the periscope, light on fire. Even if the periscope survives, I doubt anyone will be able to see much from them.

Ramming was an actual tactic though... the keel hitting a sub would basically sink it or damage it enough that it had to surface. I mean a cruiser or destroyer moving at 33 knots can basically cut open a sub like a tin can without really hurting the ship

Speaking of German submarine threats, you should make a video detailing the achievements of the amazingly beautiful and intelligent celebrity Hedy Lamarr. She invented and patented technology in the 1940s that amongst many things, would have greatly increased the attack and defensive capabilities of American and allied naval forces and undoubtedly saved thousands of sailors lives, had it not been for her not being taken very seriously by military command and government officials... due in great part to her being a woman, naturally. Decades later that same technology made cellular phones possible and she did finally receive recognition for her inventions and achievements in 1997, and is recognized today as one of the most influential female inventors of all time. She was as beautiful as she was smart.

@@spyersecol0013 well first because it's all easily found information on the web, secondly because I wasn't addressing my comment to everyone, just Simon, the host of this channel, he might already know about Hedy Lamarr, but if he doesn't, and if by some random chance he picks up interest in my comments, not disclosing everything might make it more intriguing for him to find out exactly what she did. So in a nutshell, this is why I purposely did not mention that bit of information . If you'd like to know what she invented and how it contributed to history, then just look up "Hedy Lamarr" on Google and you might find it's a good and unusual read.

Crossbow-launched bolts equipped with a small explosive warhead and a ferromagnet at the flat front end of the warhead. Get a sharpshooter to shoot the bolt at the periscope from a close enough distance, the bolt attaches itself to the periscope, boom, and voilá, periscope damage. Not to brag, but even I could have thought of a safer attack method than the "no doubt brilliant" minds in late-Edwardian military intelligence. :-p And they did use some crossbow-like launchers in WWI, so building a simple steel crossbow (or reusing one of those old-fashioned spearguns) would have been perfectly viable with 1910s technology.

I mean I'm sure it wouldn't be easy but I mean even if u didn't shoot it u had a heads up of sorts.
