Cup and cone bearings are great, but kind of a PITA to adjust, even if you've done a bunch of them before. This video shows how much play I put into mine so that they're a tiny bit loose before the quick release skewer is tightened. That play should disappear when you tighten the skewer (which compresses the axle a bit and takes up the play). I do this because the often-recommended "pendulum" method doesn't work well with new or really grease-packed bearings (especially on small wheels with their shorter lever arm), and because just guessing by the "feel" of the spin or the torque on the cone or axle locknuts is an exercise in futility and a great way to ruin a hub.
