Here’s a little trick grandpa taught me as long as you can see the target with your eyes; look at the target line it up with with top turret. Then look through the scope you will be in the general area, make sure your zoom is not all the way in. It amazes me how many ppl struggle with finding the target inside the scope. The only time I can’t acquire the target is when I don’t see the animal with my naked eyes.

I once paid a hunting guide (the one and only time I likely will) and ended up using their rifle. Unlike my own rifles, theirs had a scope with a parallax adjustment - something I was not previously familiar with. I ended up shooting an animal that was within bow range (almost spear range). It was a bit of a circus because, for the life of me, I could not get his scope to focus at that distance. I am sure it was frustrating for the guide as much as it was for me given that we were trying to communicate in very hushed voices and hand signals. In the end I was able to get if figured out, but it easily could have resulted in the animal running away. It seriously made me feel like I was a 12-year old again and was a good reminder of the need to become familiar with the equipment you are using well before it counts.

Great video! On bullet selection - another point to consider is the negative impact of lead on non-target wildlife. A pinhead size of lead can actually kill an eagle that feeds on a gut pile. Most of my hunting buddies and I switched to all-copper bullets years ago because of that. They are accurate and deadly where they should be ... only!

that 4-24 scope is not suitable for hunting. A 3-12 is by for superior, a 12 power out to 500 yards is very adequate for hunting, quality of glass is important
@phild9813
@phild9813 4 ай бұрын
I agree on the sentiment of the 4-24x. I would argue further that a 3-9x or 2-10x is more than enough on both ends to take big game at all reasonable hunting ranges. I would also argue for a 1” tube and a basic BDC reticle or simpler crosshairs. Needs to be simple in the heat of the moment and lightweight for all day carry.

Scope and bullet are the most important things to me. If you like the bonded bullet also for long shots, try the Norma BondStrike and you won't be disappointed by it's terminal performance and accuracy. But you' ll only find it in the form of loaded ammo for 7 Rem Mag, .30-06 and 300 Win Mag (among your calibers of choice). For 7 PRC you' ll need to reload it. And yes, the bullet is available for reloaders. In 7 mm it comes in 165 grain weight. I suspect it should not be much different from the 168 ABLR both in dimensions and reloading recipes. The ABLR is a good choice too although the BondStrike has better weight retention and an amazing balance between expansion diameter and penetration.

It seems like most shot opportunities are missed due to having variable scopes with a lot of magnification set with the magnification too high. I prefer a fixed 6x ot 2-8 or 3.5-10 variable scopes. 20x or more on the high end is just too much for hunting. A 5x25 scope is worthless if you bump some Elk really closeby and you have your scope set much above the minimum magnification. I just don’t understand people’s choice of optics these days. A fixed 6x scope used to be considered a fine choice for an open country big game rifle.

so many options with recoil handled with your pad massive thing. many people have a perfect option just upgrade the scope and pad. most suggestions can work for someone willing to get new outfit most don't need it. starting from scratch decent 7 PRC rifle not too heavy with light scope like Leopold in right magnification with your recoil pad to reduce recoil. might not need a suppressor to save weight but add for some uses. great bipod and slings for some uses leave behind for others. and practice to gain experience how to use it. who can afford elk hunts with guides? appreciate the reduced costs but so much a rich guy game. like African trips of course/ not white tails or varmints on nearby lands. or helping farmers clear out hogs or foxes on lambing properties elsewhere. appreciate your videos and this one in particular not hiding from the downsides.

Dude, regarding your range card: If you're shooting a fast caliber at a big target (deer or elk), zero at 250, then you don't have to worry about any adjustments until you get past 300 yds. I hunt deer on wide sandbar/creek crossings. They usually walk across without stopping so you have to be quick. When one pops out, immediately range it and at the same time determine if it's a shooter. If it is, dial (if needed) and shoot !

I would like to see that Sako stock design used on a savage impulse straight pull rifle. Reminds me of GRS aftermarket stocks. I like the 280 AI for deer, Caribou, Elk and I have used this to harvest a 23 point bull eastern bull moose as well. Much larger than any Elk, caribou, or deer. Remember, so-called knock power is a myth, practice, practice, and practice more to make proper shot placement that leads to uncontrollable hemorrhaging and rapid blood loss. That is a simple truth for successful hunting. Its recoil is minimal, good for my neice and nephew, any girlfriend as well, easy to reload with 7mm components. I have used 257 Weatherby, 7mm rem mag .303 Britsh, 300 WinMag, 350 Whelan, 375 H&H just as sampling of cartridges. I have not shot a 7 PRC yet. My next rifle will most likely have this chambering. However, I'm still very pleased with 280 AI, I hope it continues to be supported by manufacturers and ammunition suppliers.

I’ve got to disagree on scope choice. Up in the higher magnification ranges like 18-25+ that’s too much zoom for hunting IMO. And you wind up with a HEAVY scope. You end up seeing a lot of shake on target and you have a parallax/ focus adjustment that takes even more time before you’re ready to shoot. A 3.5-10x40 or 4-12x40 scope is more than enough magnification for hunting and they can be had with turrets to dial elevation. Personally this past season I hunted with a Leupold VX-3HD 3.5-10x40 with a zero stop elevation turret on my 6.5PRC and it’s perfect for hunting. Pretty light weight scope with the right amount of magnification and can adjust for long range if needed. Plus it doesn’t have a busy reticle that is some times difficult to see on game.

Thanks for the content...I enjoy your videos. Can I make a suggestion? It seems that of the benefits to hunting suppressed, one that is talked about is not spooking game when firing a shot. That can be the case. I've shot animals suppressed and the rest of the herd isn't sure what happened. And sometimes they bail into the next county at top speed. Ive experienced the same phenomenon unsupressed. I do tend to agree with you that in general, hunting suppressed can generally lead to less spooked game after a shot. My concern is pushing that as a reason to hunt suppressed. Great inroads have been made in states legalizing hunting with a suppressor. If state game management departments continually hear about this possible advantage to hunting suppressed vs unsuppressed, it could potentially lead to a loss of those rights in an effort to restrict technology that some see as giving an "unfair" advantage. Id love to see you focus on benefits like protection of hearing, reducing recoil, reducing blast, etc. Hunting with suppressors has been amazing for my two sons as the suppressor makes the whole experience better for them with less likelihood of developing a flinch, etc. Hopefully that long winded post makes a little sense. I just think we have better reasons to preach the benefits of hunting with suppressors vs one reason that might draw negative attention from state game and fish agencies that are looking for ways to address what they might see as an unfair advantage. Because of all the reasons I'm willing to carry a rifle with an extra 6" and 13oz on the muzzle and jump threw the hoops to get it, not spooking game isnt one of the reasons. Hopefully you get where im coming from. Thanks.

Jim, just a little advice. When you ask someone a question, let them finish answering the question. You interrupted the guy several times shortly after he started talking. Let the guy finish. Other than that, I loved the video and scenery. Beautiful

Hey brother question for you, considering the price isn't too far off now, if you were choosing between a new ruger american Gen 2 vs the Mauser m18, what are you reaching for? I'd like to have both but if you were going for one? I like 270 or 30-06
