A lesson I learnt from my last kitchen is - just because you have a dishwasher and don't expect to wash things up by hand doesn't mean you won't ever need to do it. My sink was just a bit too close to the corner so I couldn't actually stand squarely in front of it. I wouldn't do that again. You're absolutely right to remind us of all the bing things we will need to fit in to our siinks even if only occasionally.

I bought a house with a corner sink and I didn’t like it when I moved in. Over the years, that dislike has turned into a hatred I can taste. There is nothing good about it and you hit the points. I am finally getting a new sink and location for it!!

I agree with the poster. Using a plastic dishpan in a large single sink gives the hand washer a rough equivalent of a double sink while washing regular dishes, but still have the capability of washing big pans and pots in the large single, an option that an actual double sink doesn't allow. Just lift out the dishpan!

Another "best of both worlds" option is a deep double sink. My parents installed one and it is awesome for the handwashing folks who cook with large dishes. That's what I would like in my kitchen one day. Thanks for the helpful tips!

You can do other things in a large single, you just have to use a dish pan if you want to soak dishes that fit in a double bowl size sink. If the drain hole is centered where the dish pan would block it you need to use a bottom rack in the sink to lift the dish pan off of the drain. You get the benefit of the large single when you need it and the benefit of a double bowl when you use the dish pan. I learned this in my double bowl sink when the basket assembly started leaking (not into the cabinet below, it just wouldn’t hold water in the sink and leaked down the drain). Instead of spending a lot of money on a plumber to replace the basket assembly when I knew what I really wanted to do was remodel and move the sink, I went to Walmart and bought a dish pan and sink bottom flat rack to put it on. Been doing dishes that way for a few years now!

I always had a double sink in my kitchen until we moved to our present home. I was pleasantly surprised at how much nicer one large sink could be. Plenty of room for large items. When we had to replace the old sink a few years ago, there was no question of going back to the double. In fact, we not only got a large single sink... we got a deeper one. 😁👍

I have a Kohler 60/40 split sink with Smart Divide and I love it. The half-height divider keeps small utencils from going down the disposal but I can soak a sheet pan if needed.

Both of my grandparents had single sinks and a rubber maid tub for soapy water to hand wash ... parents had double (military base housing) - and a deep double in their home ... I seriously dislike a double because I cook ... really cook ... so I have a lot of big pans, cookie sheet, grills and canners to clean ... So yeah, I'm moving back to a single with a tub (ok, I have a double sink and still use a tub - easier to not chip cups and glasses when washing). Stumbled on your video from Jackie's ceiling fan video .... glad I did because I am starting to redo my kitchen! Enjoy your style!

Double with a low divider for the win! Our previous sink was a double stainless drop-in with a cheap faucet - 4.5" clearance between the faucet and the divider. Our new faucet is a high arch with a Kraus undermount low divider sink - 13" of clearance, plus a pull-out sprayer! I can wash anything!!! I still fill the sink to wash dishes vs. running water to scrub. Also I do produce canning/freezing that requires two sinks. So that's why I wanted a double, even though EVERYONE says get a single! And I do think rounded vs sharp corners is under-considered! The corners of "industrial" style sinks I've seen always look gross. I know I'm not a fastidious cleaner, so I opted for rounded!

I love love love my deep single bowl sink. We bought a house under construction and got to pick some of our finishes and I chose the big sink. It is no longer a problem washing my large cast iron dutch ovens and large pans. If for some reason I need to soak a few items I just use a small plastic dishpan in the sink and fill it with soapy water and I can still use my sink while my items are soaking. Those double sinks are useless and I am thrilled I no longer have to fight just to wash my pots and pans.

Our kitchen has two sinks. One small, single sink is right next to the dishwasher, and my husband rinses dishes and loads them there, because only he has the extraordinary three-dimensional perspicacity to load the dishwasher. ; - ) The other sink is a double with built in stainless steel counters. There we wash vegetables, great big items, and hand washables such as knives. I wish now that I didn't have two equal-size basins, but one great big one and a smaller one for rinsing.

I'm all for the large stainless steel single. Currently have a double ceramic sink ... so old the sun shines thru it and I'm scared to wash anything in it. Getting a small bar sink put in on the far side of the range - we still have a good work triangle - however it will also be by the back door to the garden. Easy clean up coming into the house. Love the workstation concept as I have an over the sink colander and some large chopping blocks.

Yeah those older ceramic sinks sure last but once you chip it, it can be a problem. Having the extra smaller sink is a great idea. Really increases the functionality in the kitchen.

Very informative video There was only room for a 24" sink cabinet in our kitchen reno A single sink but we bought the deepest sink we could find At 10 inches deep and a dishwasher it all works I'm sure come the holidays that there will be some frustrating moments in cleaning large pans but I'll get over it.

I briefly had a corner sink (+/- year) and it was a disaster! Water everywhere. Just finalizing my kitchen and YES to the large sink! I also once had the medium size with the tiny thing attached. I thought perhaps a good idea if larger sink occupied but I just kept my sponge and a rubber in there. 🤣

Darlene, that is exactly what I do! If I am having a get together (pre COVID), and letting dishes sit, I will have a tub filled with water with soap to loosen the food on dishes that housed food since paper plates are used and tossed! Lol. But one sink is beneficial and useful. 👍

I have one of those corner sinks and yes I hate it. But I have not had any issues with water leakage at the seam of the laminate which runs under it. However, I don’t have post formed laminate with beveled corners. I have plywood substrate with thicker sheet laminate. The widest sheet resulted in the least visible seam being under the front and back of the right sink bowl (which is the side I rinse on). I’m not sure when the previous owners remodeled, but I’ve been here 38 years (and wanting to remodel since a few months in!)

I agree about the single basin sink being best. The divided sinks honestly suck. Especially for pans and draining things like pasta. It’s better to just get a dishwasher and enter the 21st century if you don’t have one. Completely worth the investment.

I want a large single sink with draining board on both sides and in India it's an 18x15-ish bowl with the total unit dimensions 20x59. I use stainless steel basins to soak wash greens etc and the double draining boards will come in handy to keep away from the sudsy washing up side and to keep the granite countertops from getting water stained

I've had both, a double and single sink with a wire tray below, I hated the single sink as the bottom got dirty and the wire tray was awkward to handle. A pain to have t remove it to clean the sink and a pain to store it if I chose to leave it off. That wire grill thing was large and not easy to find place where it would fit unobtrusively. Perhaps it might have worked better with a different type of faucet, the one I had was the tall U shaped one with a head that would not extend down far enough to use fully under the edges of the counter. The double sinks are a bit more convenient to my thinking.

@@MTKDofficial Also, one of the issues with my large single sink was that although it was large, some larger items used in cooking and other things, did not quite fit in, although naturally fit a lot better than in a smaller sink. Still, something abut the size of it was not ideal IMHO, probably as I said, it was the inadequate faucet head which could not get anywhere close to even half way into the sink.....

I have a drop-in double sink now and hate it. Granite is being installed on Tuesday and I'm getting an undermount single sink with a grid on the bottom. I had that in the house we sold and loved it. I do hand wash some dishes and have no issues rinsing in the same bowl.

We live in a severe drought climate, so water usage is a very big concern. I have a double sink, but have never done the math to see which method of hand washing conserves the most water. Filling up one side and piling clean dishes in the other side to run water over them to rinse, seems to work best in my house. Often, when watching cleaning videos in kitchens with one big sink, people leave the water running the entire time they are rinsing, loading, and hand washing, then cleaning the sink afterwards. Hmmm....

I've had the traditional 50/50 sink forever. I have never had a hard time washing any pot in it. Just think before hand when washing that's all, which means soak these pans while you are eating. Love the dual sink. Now if you have 1 sink that means you have no place to let your dishes/pans dry unless you drag out a special holder. What a pain in the butt to do, plus water gets all over the place.

Took my 35 years of searching, but I finally found my perfect sink. I thought it was the 80/20 split, but I was so wrong. I realized that the 80/20 split is just acting like a big single basin with a washtub in it. Something grandmothers have been doing forever. The downside of the 80/20 is that it's a struggle to wash big items. Really big items have to go in the bathtub. A big sink with a wash tub gives me the best of all worlds. Another bonus: There's only one drain to be plumbed underneath. Less plumbing = more space. For me, the offset single drain is a must. I think the reason I've resisted the washtub idea my whole life is that all the ladies I grew up around used ugly, plastic wash tubs. Sometimes just a bowl. To me, it was a practical necessity, but not anything I liked. I really didn't want to look at an ugly, pink, plastic wash tub all the time. Well, I found a beautiful, vintage enamel pan that'll fit my sink and my needs perfectly. Wash tubs don't have to be ugly!

I like my 60/40 double sink. The larger side works fine for washing most of my pots and pans. So what if the bigger things need to be on an angle? It's never been a problem. And, even though I don’t hand wash dishes every day, it happens often enough that having a side for washing and a side for rinsing is invaluable. What I really don’t understand is the popularity of the apron front sink. It looks like it would be too easy for waterto rin down the front and onto the cabinet and floors. Plus, I can't imagine not having my drop-down storage in the panel to hold my sponges and brushes.

@@olgachavez2835 The 60/40 I have now is actually my second one. I got the first one in 2001. I really like them. They're nice and deep on the 60 side. My first one was a Kohler white enamel cast iron sink. They are way too expensive now, so I got a Franke stainless steel sink. It was expensive, but considerably less than the $1200 that the Kohler costs.

I find if I do food preparation of vegetables and fruit the double sink is by far more convenient. you can scrub rinse and prepare your vegetables in the sinks. yeah if you don't do much food preparation then a large sink may work.

I wanted that so I didn't have to fill such a huge sink to wash a few dishes. But now I have to decide where to put the faucet. I've seen it in the center, or closer to the divider. We had a quartz counter top installed and chose the dual 50/50 SS undermount sink. I always use the sink to wash the dishes. Now I realize that every time you turn on the faucet, water drops wind up on the dividing portion between the two and I always have to dry them off. It seems like we should have installed a single SS sink and just used a dishpan on the left side as we do anyway with the double sink. Then we could simply remove the dishpan if we needed more area to wash larger items.

I hope your video about choosing sinks comes out soon because I'm about to have to make that decision. For years I have wished for an American style double sink because I have always washed dishes by hand. I like to use a dishpan but that's not too pretty. But I think I will take your advice, because we frequently use very large pots and I'm also getting my very first dishwasher at the age of 57. I hope I like it. Tbh I'm not totally sure. Hi Carol. In case you need that sink sooner than later, go with stainless steel at either 18 or 16 gauge. Very durable and looks great! And you will love the dishwasher.

Hi Mark- yes we should get sink that fits us and for us, one big sink for purposes you mentioned. Can u discuss next time differences or advantages/disadvantages for over or under mount. When it might be better one way or the other depending on type of counter u have. Or porcelain vs stainless steel? The builder gave us no choice but we did upgrade to quartz and chose one sink with faucet upgraded as well but sink was an under mount which I never had. I’m just finishing up a whole-house remodel, and went with a 36” wide sink base, with a 33” wide, extra-deep Ruvati stainless under-mount “workstation” sink. I have a rectangular plastic container (an old Tupperware) that I use to hand-wash small items. I use the colander and the roll-out drying rack a LOT - the latter just lives on one side of my sink, folded in half. I especially love the “rack” because it can go into the dishwasher. I cook a lot for large parties (at least will again once COVID wanes!), and I have LARGE baking sheets, roasting pans, etc. that were always frustrating to get clean with a double sink. And I cannot even imagine the “thought” process that begat the monstrosity of the 90-degree corner sink. No. Just no. Never. Not even in an RV or tiny home. Nope.

Got a double because I need a spot to rinse food and the idea of rinsing my food where dirty dishes are being washed grosses me out. It might be clean but for me its the thought that brings me anxiety. So that divider is like a relief when I am rinsing food or draining pasta, etc.

Will a farmhouse sink splash more onto me while I’m washing dishes? I know I want a under mount sink because it is easier to clean around it. I also heard that the beautiful faceted sinks are difficult to clean because the corners are not rounded. Choosing a sink is much more difficult than deciding between single or double bowl designs.

Great vid, I really had no idea what that 0.5 little extra sink is for, and it seems like the inventors weren't too sure either! Very useful insights, thanks for the series. One thing, you didn't really define the way to measure the sink base - from where to where is this measurement taken? The countertop? Or is there some specific way to measure from underneath to take account of the need for sides / a lip around the edges of the sink to support it, eg for a top-sitting sink?

Thanks Adam! Appreciate you watching. From my experience, the sink model will dictate the size of the base needed. This is always the overall size of the cabinet. Most double or large singles take a 36" base. Of course if you go with a large workstation, the size may be custom. How the sink is plumbed is also a big consideration. Not so much for the sink base width, but how you are going to accessorize the interior to make it functional. This is great input and definitely something I'll add when I do other sink videos.

I'm replacing a 44-inch double bowl sink, and I'm hoping to find a 60/40 bowl stainless steel drop-in sink with a shallow divider. I'm finding a lot of undermount sinks with a shallow divider, but I'm having trouble finding a drop-in sink that has a shallow divider that's the size I want. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm also considering a very large single bowl and then using a dish tub in it to soak dishes, as needed. I'm also adding a prep sink to the other side of the kitchen.

I know the large single sinks are trendy, but when you just want to hand wash something, where do you put it to dry? We have a large 60/40 granite composite sink and the smaller side (still very functional at 12 in. across) always has a few things drying that would otherwise clutter up the counter. The only downside is that the undermount sink requires you to lean over and strain your back as opposed to an apron-front, which will be my next sink!

This is a great comment that highlights how we all may use our sink differently. While I love the large single bowl and never leave anything to air dry, you find the smaller bowl useful for that purpose. It's definitely not a one size fits all approach. Thanks for sharing!

Handwashing dishes in a single with center drain/disposal is a nuisance. A large vintage single sink with hudee and drainboard is an "if we win the lottery" dream but for practical any large single with an offset drain is awesome.

Hi Leslie! Thanks so much for saying "hi". I think copper is a great choice overall as long as it is a thicker gauge. There are many beautiful hammered copper options out there as well. Other than the "cons" of stainless sinks (noisy, don't hold heat, etc) I can't think of a good reason not to purchase one. As they age they get a really nice patina as well, which is one of the draws to copper.

I've never had a work station sink, but to me they seem too complicated, and I suspect that all the attachments would frustrate me especially if I wanted to remove them to wash my larger items.

@@MTKDofficial I put the extra pieces under the sink and pull them out when I need them. The space under the sink is two large plastic bins to corral things (including the insert sink and strainer) and a small unit that has two shelves and a drawer. It's awesome.

Good question. I'm not an expert on disposals. They are few and far between where I am. So that may be a consideration to make.

The grids in the bottom of the sink make it more difficult to clean. Does the grid help to make it so the faucet doesn’t splash or is it the faucet selection?

The grid really helps protect the bottom of the sink and it allows water and food stuff to rinse off into a disposal easier. It does need to come out to really clean the bottom.

Nothing a plumber couldn't handle, or someone who's handy with plumbing. You may want to look for a sink with an offset drain (right or left).

My current sink is a sink and a half. The half is 17”x6”. Not very useful. I do like to wash my dishes, but only because I don’t have a dishwasher. Once my kitchen is done, I’ll have a dishwasher. I’m considering getting a single sink. Not sure if I’ll regret it or not.

I like the idea of centering the sink under the windows, but it just won't work with the space I have. I have to replace the drain system (90-year-old cast iron) but the geometry has to work. "Hot on the left, cold on the right, payday is Friday, and sh---sewage don't flow uphill." As for sink type, I have a brand-new double-bowl undermount to fit a 36-inch sink base in my appliance storage location, along with my new one-horsepower Insinkerator disposal.

I want to replace the double overmount sink with a single sink. The existing sink is mounted on granite. Do I have to replace it with another overmount because, and I am guessing, the granite underneath doesn't have finished edges.

It's not likely the cutout is polished. So you'd have to go with a top mount. But that's not all bad. They make them with pretty thin edge these days.

Are there sinks which fill the entire 24” counter depth? Wouldn’t that save you from the waste/expense of quartz or granite where a big hole is just cut out and wasted?
