In 1983 when I saw this, the entire theater audience spontaneously stood up en masse with a standing ovation at the end of the film. Only time I've ever seen this happen, for any film.

Rep0007: The audience recognised the greatest of mankind’s endeavours. Nothing in human history that can be compared to this. Apollo 11 will forever stand for all time as man’s greatest achievement; not because of where we went; but how we did it. I was a 4yo boy watching a B&W television. I saw a man climb down a ladder from his machine and on the surface of the moon. The world was introduced to a new profession - the astronaut.

The Mercury program was a lot like I heard war being described. 99% boredom, 1% terror. I was in Jr. high sitting in class watching a rocket sit on the pad with vapor leaking from it for hours and hours on hold, before anything happened. Those poor guys. When asked about what he was thinking about while sitting up there waiting, one replied "The fact that all the parts of this thing were made by the lowest bidder. "

@@89Awww although theres alot of comedy movies I would add, the 80's is definitely a hard decade to beat when it comes to all of the great movies it produced. I was born in the early 90's but grew up on these gems and a few others from before then such as It's a Mad, mad, mad, mad world, 2001, and the first two Godfather's to name a few. I really wish we could get back to that quality of cinematography, I feel like especially after the 90's good movies are few and far between.

Gus Grissom ,Fred Ward was the second American astronaut during the Mercury Project flights, and one of the first three victims of the US space race, along with Edward White and Roger Chaffee in the Apollo 1 fire. Among his achievements is being the First astronaut to fly two missions, as well as be the first man to fly twice beyond the accepted limit of space in a space capsule. The date wasn't highly celebrated, because it actually took many years for anyone to acknowledge the date. It remained classified until really the point when the military couldn't keep a lid on it anymore. By the time supersonic aircraft became widely produced within the next decade, there was really no way to keep it secret, then. But, on the day of the record, not many outside of the citizens of Antelope Valley, California knew much about what had happened.

I have, and I couldn't believe my eyes and mind's ears when I read that this genuine gem of a motion-picture wasn't a major hit back when it was released! Space and Moon suddenly went out of interest, just because 'twas the 80's; when people couldn't what, get enough spare time from rock-concerts and AIDS-promised unprotected s(hit)ex?! A movie when done right never can cease to thrill ye, even if ye have seen it more than, say, 5 times; they did good in choosing this one for preservation!
