When my kitty goes someplace she shouldn't out of sheer curiosity, I say sternly but calmly and quietly "No ma'am, no ma'am!" and then "Good girl! Good girl! when she turns and walks away from where she shouldn't be. I also tell her "Good girl! Good girl!" when she's someplace it's ok to be like by my feet, anyplace on the floor, on the coffee table, a chair in the kitchen etc. When this absolutely doesn't work, I get a toy. But I haven't had to do that lately. I do have toys in any case that she plays with. She also likes to chase crumpled up paper and cardboard and the fishing pole wand. She does like scritches and I tell her "Kitty spa day!" When I have to go someplace she doesn't need to be and have to open and close the door, she's heard "No ma'am" so much that she stays where she is and I say "Good girl! Good girl!"

My cat scratches the rug and i give a strong NO and he lays down and he does not care. He falls over and looks at me almost smiling. He isnt stressed at all . Tho when he goes to the scratcher i give him lots of praise.

Keep doing that. Ours scratched the couch. I took a laser pointer and while playing tricked them into using the scratching post with the pointer. Now they are addicted to the scratching post. We tell them good job and give them a treat every time we see them use the post. Male cat love the post attached to the cat tree. Female cat loves the individual post. But try laser pointer and guide them to the post. Took a few weeks but they never touch the couch unless it is while playing by accident now.

We have nine cats in the house and not one of them sprays ever but they do scratch things we have gone.through four cat scratching trees almost every year

I need a suggestion for a particular situation. I have a gaming PC, and it can run very hot at times, it also has vents on top and my cat likes to sit on top of them. Blocking the vents for too long could easily kill components or the entire PC. I have tried moving her, but at times she just wants to right back. I obviously can't use a spray bottle because it's a computer, which I've heard might make them afraid of you, so I don't use one anymore. I put her in the same place more times than I can count, and I never yell, in fact I talk very softly. Most other things I haven't had an issue correcting so far. I'm thinking some kind of physical barrier that can be set on top that redirects the air flow in an out of the vent, but not even sure if such a thing exists. Any ideas would be welcome. Edit: She only sits on it while it's on. Could be that she's attracted to the heat?

@ChrisF_1982 Consider three things: first, does your cat sits on othe warm places as well? If yes, she has some preference for warmer temperature or some physical issue. Second, consider this, your PC is on, but at the same time you're also present there, but when the PC is off, you're also away from your desk. So your cat sits there not becuase of the PC but because you're there. They find you absorbed in work so they want to be along you. Most porbably, your PC is bit higher so it uses it as perch to hang out and being besides you. If this is the case, they aren't after PC but you. They want same attention as you give to your screen. Let me know if it helps, Or I can find you some other reason behind this behavior. Thrid, may be your cat sits there imitating you.

I agree with the other person about getting a heated bed or blanket for the cat and put it next to the gaming console and block the console somehow.

The basic premise is true. Your cat is not trying to annoy you or something. It is like being a detective and guessing what is needed by a lot of nonverbal cues and trial and error. A cat is not a toy you put away, but a personality sharing a house.
