Both Sauron and the Balrogs were Maiar, but Sauron was considerably more powerful. Even Gandalf when trapped in a human body with greatly diminished power was able to defeat Durin's Bane in combat, but did not stand a chance against a greatly diminished Sauron in Dol Guldur.

Sauron fled from Gandalf once wizard entered Dol Guldur. Yet again, the second time Gandalg didn't want to face Sauron's army that's why he was hiding. It's not as if he couldn't beat Sauron for the second time. But risks were high. You overrate Sauron. 2nd age Sauron was stalled by 1 numenorian and 1 elf. His power didn't save him against them. Gandalf with elven ring, Glamdring and full power unleashed like against the Balrog is sure superior to this duo power wise just like Sauron is superior to them. Lotr isn't Marvel. Even the strongest diminished Valar can be crippled by a single 1st age elf.

Great reaction as always! About Sauron and the Balrogs: yeah, they are both on the same level of power because they are both Maiar (lesser angelic beings compared to the Valar). It's most likely they didn't follow Sauron because they were loyal to Morgoth.

Sauron and the Balrogs were not on the same level of power. The Balrogs were lesser Maiar, while Sauron was among the most powerful. There is a reason why Gandalf in mere human form is able to defeat Durin's Bane in combat.

​​@@emmanaess2860 You don't know what you are talking about. First of all, each and any Balrog is of different power. They have similar forms yet originally they have been different maia spirits. Balrogs can't be on the same level just because they share similar appearance and master. Gothmog and Durin's Bane are the strongest one, obviously. Durin's Bane easily soloed the strongest dwarven kingdom at its prime. Was among those who forced prime Ungoliant to flee (she was about to wipe the floor with Morgoth). Fought against Feanor and participated in many other battles. Survived battle against Valar army. Killed another maiar spirit (died in a process tho). By feats Durin's Bane >>> Sauron who has much less fighting experience. And Durin's Bane is inferior to Gothmog. So put your scaling aside. Sauron's power is in will to dominate minds of much weaker ones and control armies. Sauron is more powerful but they belong to the same level of power. There is no a big gap between them.

@@vvebsta6237 Nobody here has suggested that Balrogs are equally powerful. Gothmog was clearly more ferocious than the lesser Balrogs. However, I disagree with your assertion that Durin's Bane was more powerful than Sauron. In fact, Sauron was considerably more powerful than Durin's Bane. Sauron corrupted and enslaved Maiar to his will, destroyed the Edain, who were considerably more powerful than the Dwarves of Khazar-Dum, destroyed Arnor, most of Gondor and Eregion. He was the most formidable servant of Morgoth, and easily more powerful than Durin's Bane.

If there's no dragon, HOTD season 2 won't be saved. but in TROP, i get a lot of things. The scenery of Tolkien's amazing world, great dialogues, diverse characters, from humans, elves, dwarves, mythological animals, ORCs, to harfoots. then, is that in George's world?! nothing!! HOTD is only about politics and tragedy, there's no beauty in the story. so, never compare Tolkien's world with George's world which has nothing. 🤡
