I love that concept, I also don’t understand why she’s beardless. If this supposed to be “all encompassing” and “breaking barriers of race and gender.” Where is Disa’s beard? This would have been the perfect opportunity to show that. It’s such a missed opportunity.

Tolkien never said anywhere that Dwarf women had beards. Entirely made up by Peter Jackson & Co.
@juliettek.9440

@@barbaracurialle7165 Actually, Tolkien never states one way or the other of dwarf woman having beards. He just says they look, sound, and dress alike. In Peter Jackson’s adaptation specifically the Two Towers. Lady Eowyn one of the earliest female warriors of middle earth on screen. Was talking to Gimli and he was educating lady Eowyn on dwarf woman. She glanced at Aragorn and he whispered to her that telling them apart is easy because of the beard. So no, Tolkien gave us a vague description of dwarf woman. We did see bearded dwarves in the hobbit trilogy. So that begs the question. Was it Peter Jackson who originally supported or opposed to bearded she-dwarves. There is also a trend of drag queens like Eurovision contestant Concita Wurst, whom dress and perform with their beard in tact. So, if we really wanted to genuinely include the LGBTQ+ community. Why not show an otherwise androgynous feature like dwarf woman with beards. I am told Sophia Nomvete is the first portrayal of a female dwarf and that’s ground breaking, so what do I know?

@@juliettek.9440 In appendix A, it is clearly mentioned that eyes can not tell apart men from women dwarves, if they didn’t have beards, why would it be difficult to tell them apart. Also, Cristopher Tolkien wrote in The War of the Jewels: “For the Naugrim have beards from the beginning of their lives, male and female alike; nor indeed can their womenkind be discerned by those of other race...”

I totally agree with you, but also why's no one talking about the "all elve women have long hair, all elve men have short hair". Tolkien's canon with everyone more or less longer hair not matter the gender (with some exception of the hobbits, but even they dont have really short hair, rather something you can imagine to cut with a pair of sheep trimming scissor)

I have a feeling that a lot of the "jewelry" and adornments in this show were 3D printed. They all look so plasticky and cheap and 3D printing makes a lot of sense. You can make really intricate designs fast and cheap and you just need to paint over. That's why everything has this cheap looking texture, because it's literally plastic.

Well the foam lightsaber hilts made for carrying around in the prequels looked very real when painted. It’s not really a matter of what they are made of. They can look very real, especially in stills, if they are made correctly and are presented in the correct context. The problem is they are not.

I think the reason the gold contacts look weird is because ( to me anyway ) the actress looks to be cool toned not warm toned? There is an unfortunate tendency among designers who don't know better to assume all dark skinned people automatically have warm undertones. Could also contribute to why the gold looks more fake - the jewelry is not only poor quality but the complete wrong type. Mithril would have been both lore, storytelling, and colorwise much more flattering imho.

You are right the golden contact looking unnatural, do not work with her skin too. Gray or green could work nice and give more natural look. Her dress should also have under tunic in jewel tone like blue, green or purple that give her more regal look and give her character protection from cold in dwarven halls. She should have belt on that dress for some shaping and weight distribution.

I am flabbergasted that I've seen no one, including this excellent video commentator, note the obvious, which is that a Dwarven princess would have jewelry, etc. made with mithril! I agree that the passion for gold from the "costume designers" of this atrocious show is ridiculous. Every character, no matter their race*, and in almost every single outfit looks like they have been dipped into a vat of molten gold. As if there are no other types of metals in existence, the most precious being silvery-sheen MITHRIL! *Exception are the rag draped not-Hobbit Harfoots (snort) who have been tossed into a mud pit before being rolled in a weed patch. God, the clothing in this show is SO terrible! No offense intended, Lana Marie. Your series is excellent. Thank you.

is it possible that mithril hasn't yet been discovered in the mines? Perhaps the lack of mithril in the costumes is a deliberate choice dovetailing with the storyline.
@SharonLathanNovelist
@SharonLathanNovelist 2 жыл бұрын
@@treeleaf7808 Even if this were the fact (it isn't), it would imply the show runners actually looked at Tolkien's text. We know this certainly isn't the case! As it happens, mithril was found in Moria mainly, but also in other places including Númenor and Aman. Exactly when the dwarves found it I am not sure off the top of my head, but Sauron coveted mithril and Galadriel's ring Nenya was made of mithril. By the Third Age it was so greedily mined that the Balrog of Moria was awoken (TA 1980) and the metal essentially depleted by the end of the TA. So, while perhaps one could make the argument that mithril wasn't abundant early in the Second Age, by the events ostensibly covered in ROP it was wildly popular, precious, and plentiful. Considering how established timelines mean squat to the Amazon hacks, they would be coating the dwarves in silvery mithril if they had the slightest actual knowledge of Tolkien lore.

I totally agree with you about the lack of Mithril in the costume design. A person of her social station would be adorned with Mithril though perhaps the designers of her costume either 1. See, I don’t mind the fact that they’ve taken more African/Eastern Hemisphere influence for their dwarves, because to be frank seeing the typical “Scottish” dwarves all the time gets admittedly tiring, like I _would_ like to see a new spin on them. What I hate is the fact that, as someone else here said, they’ve lost the visual storytelling that the dwarves are a mining and crafting people, as well as any of the grounded realism that the original Fellowship’s costume design had. It’s not the fact that they’ve chosen to pick a different culture to influence their dwarves, it’s what they’ve chosen to do and not do with it that’s infuriating. No weathering, no heavy metalwork (compared to elaborate), no handstitched and visibly hand-dyed items, and some might argue no mithril. I totally believe you can incorporate some more Eastern design as believable Tolkien fantasy, if you’re clever and methodical about it - which Amazon was not. 😔

the biggest problem i have with this show is that it seems they did not at all hire a costume designer, the proper seamstresses and tailors who've done research into various clothing styles and fabrics. instead it feels more like they went straight to modern design graduates who've learnt nothing but subversion and 'you need to be original'.

In the tempering of steel alone of all crafts the Dwarves were never outmatched even by the Noldor, and in the making of mail of linked rings, which was first contrived by the smiths of Belegost, their work had no rival. During the third age of the captivity of Melkor, the Dwarves smithies for Thingol; for they were greatly skilled in such work, though none among them surpassed the craftsmen of Nogrod, of whom Telchar the smith was greatest in renown. They were also capable masons and smiths - Dwarven smithing skills were said to be unrivaled, and their masonry creations were bested by none. The crafting skills of the Dwarves were unmatched; they crafted objects of great beauty out of gems and metals. They crafted many famed weapons, armors, and items of art and beauty, among them Narsil, the sword of Elendil, the Dragon-helm of Dor-lómin and the necklace Nauglamír, the most prized treasure in Nargothrond and the most famed Dwarven work of the Elder Days. Almost all the names of the Dwarves of Middle-earth are taken or inspired from the Old Norse so you hit the nail on the head looking to norse clothing for ideas. this was really great I feel like the imagery of dwarven women you showed really jived against our worlds gender binaries and is a great representation to have on film. It is so weird how in trying to be more inclusive amazon actually changed dwarven women in a way that brings them inline with our societies gender binary. I wish they had gone with bearded women it would have been cool to see. I know a lot of my queer freinds would have preferred that. As for her dress yours was infinitely better and amazons is pure trash. I like the thought of bolder jewelry and I think its important to say that dwarves were JEWELSMITHING MASTERS. Having uncut jems on a princess's wrist is just sooo much no. I mean she is their princess she would be adorned in their finest gemstones. As a dwarven princess she should be wearing clothing that is bold and amazing in its craftmanship. If they put her in armor and it isn't steel I will fucking cry.

Great points. I am a seamstress (amateur ) and life time crocheter, knitter, craftswoman. Love your points. What i have seen in the trailers, generally, is unimaginative cutting-corners fabric choices and designs. (I swear one of elven men, not sure which, is wearing the gown pattern I use for my winter nightgowns! The bib/yoke is the same exact one I use! My nightgown except in something that looks like panne velvet on an elf ?😆😆 I swear they have hired a designer and seamstress that is at my level of expertise (advanced beginner for the last 50 yrs!) - I still haven't seen Galadriel in dress that doesn't look like her underclothes (medieval chemises.) (there is one scene where she is standing before the door with the Elrond actor, that it looks like an actual medieval over gown (Bliaut?) . I don't know where they have spent their billions of dollars but it wasn't in costume design. And I agree, the jewelry on Disa is clunky. The Dwarfs wouldn't do clunky... yes, you are right, it wouldn't have the refined elegance of the Elves, but it would be beautiful. They are miners, craftsmen. I suspect the women would know knitting. In the real world knitting goes back, at least to the 1200s. Tolkien said that he wasn't writing Greek or Roman - southern European -- stories. Disa's gown looks more like a Chiton or Pedalos than anything else. I've wondered if the lady is so large the seamstress said 'ok, what do I do with her? I know, a tube of fabric!' (don't even suggest I'm fat phobic. I'm overweight myself!) I like the idea of giving her gown a kind of medieval with several layers, maybe even adding a I saw the dwarfs in the hobbit and thought they did a good job designing their clothes.

My immediate thought after seeing Disas dress was "Why isnt she wearing white?" To elaborate my thinking: Dwarves live their lives mostly underground with torch or fire light. A way a person of status could show off their wealth and means could be to wear colors that really stand out under low light circumstances. The victorians, for example, were obsessed with cleanlieness and thought that the whiter cloth was, the cleaner it was and the was mostly the upper classes that could afford to keep their linens sparkly white all the time. And also, keeping white cloth clean in the mines would be a hassle that only some could afford, which would also show status. Id love it if we saw Disa in a dress where she brightly stands out. And with the hair I was thinking about the awesome bronze age hairdos that the greek and etruscan ladies rocked, elaborate with braids, diadems and bling. =)

I'm late to this party, but I think your point about putting the dwarves in white would have been a stroke of genius. Bleaching linens from cream to white could take months of diligently applying sunshine (kzbin.info/www/bejne/aH27oomOoZuXjLs) If that's not a sign of wealth, what is?? Although I suppose dwarves would quickly discover the optical illusion the blue mineral ultramarine could provide to help with this *grin*

Disa gown look too similar to Galadriel golden dress. It is bad choice of costume department that clothes are so similar and do not give us clear distinction between Kingdoms. Especially between dwarf and elfs that have unique and distinct characteristics. Dwarf are more art deco style (angular, hard but still pretty also easy to carve in stone) Elfs culture are more art nouveau flowing line timless and ancient (elf use wood a lot). Númenor should have elements looking like recreated from eleven culture because númenorians was jealous of eleven culture and proud full that they can make crafts even better then elfs.

I really like the format but one of the things that bothered me and I love that you did this is the costumes when I saw this I know people hate the story and everything but the visuals on this drove me nuts. They have hairspray. These clothes are immaculate. I can tell the materials are plastic then not natural linens The armor is clearly plastic. I keep expecting to see made in China stamped on Sauron's ass. So I really really happy with your redesigns of the costumes any kind of redesign but I wish you'd focused a little more on the fact that the materials these costumes are made of managed to both be cheap and two well made. You don't see rust spots on armor. You don't see scratches or dings. This is acceptable to the elves because that's supposed to be an otherworldly race. But you have warriors running around with white robes through mud! And women dwarfs should have trousers and armor at least heavy clothes! Big dress like men that's right in the books! There's a more recent photo that treats viewers to her leg bared almost to the hip through the slit in her gown. It makes her look squat and off-balance, with no dignity whatsoever. Typically women with the actress body type don’t do well with flowing shape clothes. There is no shame in her body type, it’s just the clothes from Amazon make her look bigger and shapeless. To compliment her type, clothes more fitted work better, which this redesign pulls off. Of course with adjustments for the actress comfortability, that’s what Amazon should’ve done.

From what I understand (and I'm not particularly knowledgeable in the lore so I may very well be wrong), dwarves have relatively poor eyesight, which is why Thorin had trouble finding his way to Bag End, and why they have large and heavy embossed decorative details on everything (and perhaps to a lesser extent the insane lack of handrails on bridges over bottomless chasms). They cant really see fine details, so they wouldnt generally have finely detailed or subtle shapes on their clothes, jewelry, architecture and weapons because none of their kin would really be able to see it.

someone pointed this out in a comment on another video once; if the costume designers didn't want Disa to have an actual beard, they could have had her and other dwarven women wear their hair like beards instead. not exactly in line with the lore, but it would have worked better than what we got.

Great overview and inspiration! Norse with Byzantine gives me something definitely! Although I can't help but feel we're not going far enough with the 'female dwarves are often mistaken for male dwarves'. Maybe even more genderlessness? There being no distinction in what male or female dwarves wear. Instead of elaborate dresses, you could have rich tunics, trousers and cloaks with ornate belts, brooches, rings and coronets. Actually, vikings did not make a distinction between male or female beauty and had the same stylistic goals. Since the dwarves are very much connected to the Norse, this might also apply here.

You put words to my feelings 😆 I loved one picture you picked especially thick gold chain necklace, and a thick, rich blue velvety cape with statement gold clasp chain…incredible. I think it shows a sad lack of excitement about the world when a project where they had a huge budget gets such apparently half-hearted work on costumes. I was ready to love the world whatever they did with storylines…I just want to drool at the costumes most of all and they sadly fell so so short of that.

In defence of the leg slit dress: when French couture was all the rage, noble women in the Russian imperial Court would regularly have hypothermia because the thin silken gowns simply did not translate to the cold of St Petersburg. This isn't entirely applicable to Arda as the Dwarves probably don't care much for elven designs, but it isn't impossible. Still, the dress is uninspired and boring.

I think this format works great. The costumes that simply don't work at all are one of the really big problems I have with the series. And nailing down how to improve it is really the most productive way to criticize it and to learn something about fantasy design in the process. And your result looks so much better.

I love it, but one thing I would note is that Dwarven women are supposed to have full beards like the men, the Dwarven women in The Hobbit are not very good because they only gave them wispy side burns. I'd give a Dwarven princess a big beard with jewellery woven in, similar to what you'd see with the men. I've seen a lot of art and even cosplay of female Dwarves with full beards that still look plenty feminine. Big beards are not inherently male, and one needs to get over that assumption if they are to design good Dwarves.

I'd say, for a dwarven princess, we could go less practical and more fantastical, and she would want to display her wealth and status, which is why I'd go back to the Tudor period and use the starched standing ruffs as inspiration. Dwarves certainly believe in the concept of "more is more" so this is why Tudor England is probably a perfect inspiration for them. Make these giant standing collars woven with threads of silver and gold. Heavy, and long, quilted jackets or cloaks, maybe worn slightly off the shoulder to show some feminine charm, embroidered with motifs, applique, and trim, long skirts that have tiers and rich jewel colours. We could have jewels sewn into their garments, making a visual representation that, since they are miners, jewels are less valuable to them, so they can be flippant about how they are used, than say a human who would need to buy them off the dwarves, increasing their value, and making their use more of a standout. Instead of traditional embroidery, the jewels themselves would make up the embroidery making these amazing patterns. Have threads of gold and silver braided into the hair with jewels woven into the hair as well. Have their beards long and made up as part of their hair style, braiding or twisting it backwards, framing the face, which makes a feminine use of their beards while the men keep theirs down and adorned with trinkets. They could have detatchable collars and cuffs, cuffs made entirely of gold and silver that cover the entire forearm and are kept in place via hooks. Establish a way to tell the different noble dwarven families by which motifs they wear, or make it so that different houses wear particular coloured jems, while the royals wear whichever colours they want.

I agree Disa's costume was a total failure. Other things to take into account (in my opinion) should have been that not only was she a dwarf princess but she was also a resonator, and a smith. We actually see her smithing at one point in the show. The choir robe that she wears might be appropriate when she's singing to the mountain but such a flowy, billowy outfit would probably get in the way while smithing. Maybe they were putting more of the focus on the fact that she was first part of a group or sect of dwarves that sang to the mountain.

I read an interview with the actress who played Disa. She described how they came up with the costume. The costume designer, Kate Hawley, originally had a very structured, heavier fabric-ed costume for her, but she changed it because she wanted to see what it would look like if Disa was “sexy” and “not ashamed of her body”.😐 And yes, the slit up her thigh is DELIBERATE. 🤦🏽‍♀️😒 First, all well and good if they wanted to make her look more attractive from how dwarf women are described, but it could have been done much better than what they did. I think Lana’s design fix is very well thought out and STILL flattering. I would have added some furs too. Something to reference the fact that she lives in an underground cold, damp, stony mine! Also, if they were going the “sexy” route it should only be in service to the character and the world she lives in, not because you want to incorporate some random, uncharacteristic sexual liberation message in the design. Second, the outfit they made is not sexy in the slightest. As a plus sized girl, I have seen too often similar types of loosy goosy tops and dresses like the one they put Disa in and it is NEVER sexy on anyone! Always pisses me off! 😤 It’s already hard to find great looking, fashionable clothes as it is, even more frustrating when all you are offered are these ill-fitting, frumpy sacks thats not accenting any curves or fitting naturally at the waist. All it does is make you look wider, with no structure or shape at all (odd design choice for a DWARF, no?? 🤨🤨). This gown is the same type of cheap, frumpy knock off fashion from places like Lane Bryant that they think plus size girls wear because they assume we hate our bodies and want to hide it behind tons of loose unflattering fabric. 😒 The exact OPPOSITE of feeling sexy or proud of one’s body. Just crazy the designer did this last minute change to her costume only to come up with this abomination! PLUS, her triangles…🤦🏽‍♀️sigh….look like nachos. 😑 Like nacho chips spilling out of a bowl around her neck. Ooo wooow, Kate, thanks….sooo “sexy”. 😒

I am not in love with the chunky dwarven aesthetic depicted in the Hobbit movies. I don't think it fits the lore well. Perhaps the dwarves of the Lonely Mountain favored chunky practical designs in their exile, but I can't imagine them doing so at the peak of their civilization in Khazadum. Tolkien dwarves were made by Aulë, the Vala of crafting. Dwarven society were obsessed with crafting to the point that many would forsake taking spouses so they could dedicate more time to their crafts. I imagine the end result to be extremely ornate and over the top designs and construction, the end result of centuries of obsessive work. It should evoke the feel of a Baroque cathedral multiple layers and lots and lots of gems. Multiple thick layers would do well to protect against extremes of heat and cold and the gem stones would signify status and lineage. A noble in Khazadum might also show quite a bit of elvish influences in their dress due to their close relationship with the elves of Eregion. The Nauglamir, the most known of dwarven crafts, was jewelry made by the dwarves loved and fought over by multiple Elvish kings.

I absolutely love your design but after watching episode 2 of ring sof power I got the feeling that she isn't just a regular dwarf princess, I think her dress reflects her role/ in the mines that in a way could be like a priestess... Then I think the style of these dwarf women is diferente from dwarf city to city and also because time influences fashion and this show is supposed to be before all we have have seen so far. It could make some sense that her style would be based on some older fashion trends. What do you think? I just have a tendency to analyze, hear critics and then try to see why it was chosen to be the way it was 😊

I've seen a few other dwarven women in ROP (in the bg, in the stone smashing scene) wearing similar design (a greco-roman-like dress and a big chunky necklace), so I don't know about that theory. Might be. I will say, the grey color of Disa's dress looks a bit better in the light of Khazad-dum than it does in stills, but I still think the costumes are not too well made, the necklace has an odd fit and everything looks a bit simplistic. I don't mind them taking influences from older cultures, but then again it is true that the elves (gil galad especially) and the numenoreans also appear to have greco-roman influences in their outfits which makes it confusing since different races are really not set apart much in this regard... i'm still not a fan of it, but I liked hearing your perspective :) thanks for sharing!
