Rings of Power costs $60 million per hour, Peter Jackson's LOTR cost $43 million per hour (inflation adjusted). Yet somehow, even though he spent less, Peter managed to hire name actors, good writers, shot the whole thing on 35mm film and had much better cgi, costuming and props. Where did all of Amazon's money go?

I've struggled to define this. So here goes: The problem with diversity casting is that it's so blatant. The actors' qualities become more important than the actual character. So you become hyper aware of the person instead of the character. It's like a break in the 4th wall, or a mistake missed in post production. It has the same effect on the viewer. It makes the viewer self aware and takes them out of the story. The purpose of casting a black elf is a mechanism for others to see their likeness in characters better. It has nothing to do with the story and everything to do with the viewer. So the viewer becomes hyper aware of the actor, in a good or bad way.
@Oversight85
@Oversight85 Жыл бұрын
It's the entire issue with all types of affirmative action - when I see a certain person in a certain situation, how can I have faith they fully earned it, instead of being elevated for other reasons. And in entertainment, yes, it's incredibly distracting because you have preconceived notions before even starting the movie/show.

I really didn’t care if there were black elves, dwarfs, etc. although I didn’t really see the point in it. The biggest problem was that the writing was just awful and these actors were simply not good enough. Look at the trilogy, it had Ian McClellan, Christopher Lee, Cate Blanchett, Vigo Mortensen, Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Andy Serkis, Sean Bean, etc. It was an amazing cast of well trained actors, some of which were already huge Tolkien fans. Amazon was clearly more focused on hiring a diverse cast rather than a well trained one.

Is Galadriel supposed to be the hero of this show? I think back to Gladiator, the first scenes show Maximus showing sympathy for his men and explaining how they are weak and hungry and deserve home. Galadriel ignores her men and pushes them to almost death as they are collapsing of exhaustion. She is not a leader, she is not a good character. Two episodes in and I want Sauron to win.

So many scenes from the Peter Jackson version still give me goosebumps - like the speech of King Theoden (that you showed in the introduction) as he is preparing to ride out, likely to his death, to take the fight to the Orcs besieging Helm's Deep - staggering, astonishing cinema which made you feel raw emotion as it whirled you through Tolkein's Middle Earth. Compared to that, Amazon's $1Billion series has all the gravitas of a sitcom and the emotional charge of an advertisement for baked beans.

Eomund's scene at the start of this is 100x better than any line of dialogue that this show has. Also, "Simbelmÿne. Ever has it grown on the tombs of my forebears. Now it shall cover the grave of my son. Alas, that these evil days should be mine. The young perish and the old linger. That I should live to see that last days of my house." This line of dialogue wasn't even in the books and yet it encapsulates how poetic and beautiful Tolkien wrote his story. Truly, if you have love and understand the source material, there's no reason your show should be as bad as it is.

It began with the forging of the great films. Threads were given by Tolkien, wisest and fairest of them all. Rights were then given to Jackson; great miner and craftsman of the mountain of lore. And nine, nine hours were gifted to the race of men, who above all else, desired quality. But they were all of them deceived, for another show was made. In the land of Amazon, in the fires of Mount Prime, the Dark Lord Bezos forged in secret a master flop. And into this show he poured his malice, his greed and his will to dominate all film. I'll be Elrond would be really interested in learning that. You know, being that he's the result of such a pairing. He looks pretty good for being dead though, you have to admit.

What Hollywood doesn't seem to understand is that Tolkien was a devout Catholic. He and CS Lewis were both professors at Oxford and were good friends. Each author wanted to create a novel that reflected Christian beliefs through symbolism. What Hollywood is trying to do is to pick out any religious overtones to push their own agenda. They really should have just created an original fantasy series because appropriating someone's story to add elements that go against the original intention is extremely insulting to the original Tolkien fandom.

I don't understand why so much money would be put towards something and absolutely zero effort put into making it good. It's like spending all your money on an egg that can hatch into a golden goose, but making no effort to keep it from breaking. Like, surely you'd stop at nothing to protect it, right? Cuz otherwise you lose everything. And the LAST thing you'd be doing is chucking it around, almost DARING it to smash open.

I find the part where Elrond and Celebrimbor go to Khazad Dum just so odd. From the shots you can see there is clearly nothing and no one around. It's also clear that they don't have any packs with supplies so basically Elrond is leaving Celebrimbor in the middle of nowhere with no supplies, no shelter and just the grandma dress he's wearing. It's just a really odd scene. Another thing I find strange is they give you absolutely no sense of time or scale. I'll be the first to admit that Peter Jackson played fast and loose with some things but one amazing thing he did was establishing a sense of time and scale. From the Fellowship leaving Rivendell to Gandalf and Pippin going to Minas Tirith you had a sense that it was a long journey. In RoP everyone is just magically at the next destination no muss or fuss. It's kinda disappointing.

For comparison, I watched Cherry 2000 yesterday afternoon for the first time & I was more attached to those characters than I was with any in ROP. I just LOVE Morfydd Clark's portrayal of Galadriel. She has so many different ways of staring at other characters and doing so in different situations. She has the "I'm so angry" stare. Then there's her, "You're going to do what I tell you to do" stare. And how can we forget her, "You haven't seen what I have what I have seen" stare. On top of all these examples of thespian brilliance, sometimes Morfydd just stares directly at the camera or at something offscreen. I'm mesmerized by her technique. Some people have unfairly pointed out that in the few scenes that Cate Blanchett appeared as Galadriel in The Fellowship of the Ring, she displayed much more gravitas and charisma than Morfydd has done in the first two hours of TRP. This is, of course, an unfair comparison because Cate Blanchett is an older and much more experienced actress. If I look at IMDB and compare their ages, I see that Cate Blanchett was exactly the same age when she played Galadriel as Morfydd Clark is today. OK, never mind that. As far as the explanation we get in Episode 1 of why boats float and rocks don't float, I completely disagree with Nerdrotic's criticism. I haven't heard such depth of thought and logical precision of argument since Monty Python explained why witches float in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. There's just so much to enjoy in this show. If nothing else, I think a good drinking game could be created by taking a shot every time Galadriel stares hard at something or every time a woman does something courageous while the men cower and, or look stupid. However, combining those two things might put everyone under the table in a single episode, so be careful.

I'm no deep Tolkien lore buff and I'm not watching this show - but even I can see how heavy-handed this show is being. We get it - Galadriel is associated with water, Elrond with air, (not) Gandalf with fire. Whereas Peter Jackson chose to incorporate this bit of lore with a touch so subtle you would barely notice the motif unless you really looked for it - this show seems to hit everything with a big old dwarf hammer. Anything that Galadriel says, or has said to her, is to do with boats or tempests or ice and culminates in her jumping into the bloody sea. (not) Gandalf arrives in a ball of fire, emerges from a smouldering crater and plays with fireflies. Expect more talk of "ill whispers on the wind" or "bad tidings in the air" from Elrond in upcoming episodes. Its as subtle as a brick. This is only one small element (no pun intended) in the writing that I noticed while listening to people review the show - and I'm convinced that this problem, this lack of subtlety, pervades through out. This poor standard of writing is unacceptable and to do it to Tolkien is downright disgusting. Reject this as trash. Expensive trash.

I didn't even notice all that stuff. Never read the books, only know the movie. In my opinion I'd say the show is an interesting fantasy show, but a trash LOTR show. You get me? Like, it doesn't feel connected to the movies at all in terms of character designs, and overall feel, but it is an interesting fantasy show nonetheless. The way I see it, people should watch it simply as an interesting fantasy show. At best it's a VERY high budget fan made LOTR inspired show. Like, if they took out the LOTR references and replaced them with other terms and names, the show would be seen reviewed differently.

This statement about elves taking jobs from mortals just eliminated in the show the elve's main MOTIVATION to make Rings of Power. The elves were not perfect in the Silmarillion: Feanor and his sons took an oath that brought them to ruin, they rebelled against the Valar and butchered the Teleri in Alqualonde. Maeglin betrayed Gondolin and sold it out to Melkor because he was envious of Tuor. Thingol's greed led him to be killed by dwarves. That being said, the show is a farce.

@@thehumblepotatoreborn9313 Removes 99% of the problems people keep throwing in our faces every day of the effects of decisive propaganda. Ever watch a DnD session on youtube? Not one is accounting for the setting and how people would behave. It's all modern day ideals and multiculturalism. That was the neat aspect of LotR, other races came from other locations. It wasn't a hot take on Gondor being 50% mixed race. It should be about the setting. I don't mind if a handful of people are in an area doing mercantile business or diplomats in the area but the way civilizations worked in that kind of era would be tribalism. Outsiders are untrustworthy and require great acts to create a form of trust to be had. Our society has none of this as a whole. A mixed bag of diversity without respect or understanding other peoples convictions. Being called "afraid" of something because you are disgusted by its flagrant attempt to pervert decency or manipulate the world one more step away from sanity is either the work of an idiot zealot or or a fork tongued manipulator. If we didn't have large portions of media and politics actively and willfully mutilating any chance for people to coexist and pitting every variant of person versus person, I would be happy with diversity in REALITY. But we don't, and in that we are all perpetually surrounded by villains and future enemies rather than friends and neighbors. So yes, I like my books, movies and shows about fantasy settings that are set in a medieval era to have radical tribalism. Its nice to know Hobbit Shires dont have hoods, and Gondor doesn't have little Haradrim Town. Its too real and is terrible for a literal fantasy setting of that scope.

And some were bad, like, yes, Elves in Helms Deep, Elrond bringing the sword by himself, treents refusing to go to war initially, and some other cringe stuff. I actually think that Arwen's horse chase is much better than Frodo riding by himself and getting some magical powerups from nowhere. But elven massacre in Helms Deep is a disaster, to be honest. No hero in Tolkien's writings would *ever* be motivated by revenge. Hell, Noldor were motivated by revenge in Silmarillion, and it brought them nothing but grief and suffering. Nor would any Tolkien's hero be proud, vain, wrathful or indulgent, like these characters in ROP. Tolkien's heroes would be compassionate, humble and insightful... You know, like a good proper Catholic Christian would write them.
