Sauron saw the Dwarven Rings as a failure. It only made them greedy rather than corrupted under his control. Durin III showed some level of control but his greed went wild. This episode does well in showing why the dwarven lords kept their rings.

For the reason Al-Pharazon became king - it was already a split Numenor where a lot of people were unhappy with Miriel's father (so therefore her), then she sent Numenor's army across the sea to a people no one in Numenor knew and a whole lot of them died on foreign lands, THEN it comes out that she was using the equivalent of tarot cards (in the eyes of those who don't follow the ways of the Valar) to decide the nation's future, so it was just a whole political storm of a LOT of nobles wanting to side with Pharazon, but not having quite enough of a catalyst to fully depose a leader right after a conflict (politically, nations usually keep the same leader during conflicts rather than changing them out mid-war). The eagle arriving and Pharazon's supporters interpreting that as a sign of approval for Pharazon (as vague omens can be interpreted any way you want them to be), is what really tipped everything over the edge and gave them 'legal' justification for changing rulers, so it wasn't that the eagle was the ONLY reason he became king, it was just the straw that tipped the scales.
@grayden41383 ай бұрын
The time compression necessitates a lot of these plot accelerations but the narrative suffers for it because they'd have to show so much of it and a main reason why The Silmarillion really isn't filmable. With the the downfall of Numenor taking thousands of years in the book by this time the people are already this "rowdy" it just seems sudden in the show because narratively they chose to do it that way instead of starting off with a decades of unrest already in play. Doesn't help that Numenoreans do not appear to be long-lived unlike their book counterparts. Pharazon's political propaganda being directed towards anti-Elf sentiments, whereas in the books it's directed towards the resentment of being mortal and turning their backs on the Valar, feels forced and unnatural. Elves stopped going to Numenor eventually anyway and just let them be because Elves are kinda above it all, but it looks like Elves don't come to Numenor hardly at all in the show, but the Numenoreans are still salty towards them for....reasons?

@@grayden4138 idk, I got all that from the show. Al-Pharazon explicitly talks about elves not needing to sleep in his anti-elf speech from s1 and in this episode, he talks about how upset he is that humans won't ever have immortality. I don't need everything spelled out for me from scene one in order to find the narrative compelling, so it's working just fine for me. Moving to a more secular government, becoming more isolationist, and being jealous of others' resources (in this case, elvish immortality) are just really basic motivations that I don't think they need to spend a whole lot of time explaining. They can (and have) SHOWN it and so can focus on the actual characters and narrative

The dwarves aren't immune to the corruption of the rings, but they are resistant to it. The rings don't fully corrupt them like they do men, but they do exacerbate their existing weaknesses; to give into greed and paranoia. The 3 rings were never touched by Sauron, so they aren't inherently evil or corrupting like the 7 or the 9. However because he advised in their creation he is able to influence their bearers through the 3, when he creates the master ring.

The dwarves were actually resistant to Sauron's attempts to control them. Tolkien says that the only negative effect the rings had on the Dwarves was that it exaggerated their love of treasure and made them greedy. But in the case of Moria/Khazad-dum, the greed itself led them to grief and ruin.

What people dont´understand is that when we come in to the Númenórian story on this season Pharazón has already manipulated and created a wedge between the few people of the old ways the faithfuls, and Pharazón and his people´s elven hating ways, and as shown in this episode the faithfuls who practice the elven ways had to do hide it. So when the eagle showed up and he hijacked it, most people were all just waiting for him to take the power so they all went along with it. I trust the people who do this show because they have proved they have the knowledge and a plan with everything and they even said some things will not be revealed until the last episodes of the whole 5 seasons. The whole thing with the dwarves being created by Aule and not Iluvatar illustrated the difference between him and Morgoth, who wanted to create as well. Morgoth only ever wanted to create to control. Aule repented and explained to Illuvatar that he created the dwarves because he wanted things of his own to teach and that he was effectively mimicking Illuvatar the way a child does its father. Illuvatar then explained that Aule would have to command his creations at all times, to eat, to breathe, to think. Illuvatar accepted Aule's repentance and accepted the dwarves as the "children of his adoption", but noted that there would always be strife between them and Elves.

I think with the rings, power is still power. They are not necessary evil rings like the One Ring, but give someone a certain level of power and they can be taken in by it. I’m not sure of the way the One Ring dominates or how the men in particular ended up as the Nazgûl working for Sauron, maybe this show will show us eventually, I’d like that. But the dwarves I think will have an element of destroying themselves…which I imagine is no doubt Sauron’s ideal scenario but not necessarily through devised evil. I also think in a show called Rings of Power very focused on these rings and Sauron’s influence…you have to ramp up the visualisation of it a little for sure. Even in the LOTR movies they ramp up the ring and I think they do a great job of it especially with Frodo who is less outwardly affected in the books until they get to Mordor then it ramps up to 11. But for example book Frodo never sends Sam away for fear of him taking the ring from him. Also book Faramir has zero want of it. (People get upset about them doing that to movie Faramir but I don’t think it was ever about him being taken in by the power of it, he wants to impress his father and show leadership….and the less favourable nature of Denethor is also mainly movie so…makes sense to give it consequences) The One Ring works in that sort of way “oh here look at all the things I could help you do….MWAHAHAHA NOW YOU’RE EVIL AND YOU DIDNT EVEN REALISE”. Even Boromir only wants it for the desire to help his people really. Movie Gandalf expresses he would have the desire to do good with the ring but it would bring bad out of him. Book Sam even briefly considers it based on “look how lovely my garden could be with this power” but does well to resist. It’s been a while since I’ve read them so am willing to be corrected on any of this but I love LOTR with my entire soul ok I’m not willfully ignorant please be nice to me 😂😂😂

Brief commenting from reactors doesn't bother me, and in fact is the point of channels like this -- but yeah, Hector's comments are often very involved, and although he tries to start the comments during a quiet part where nothing is happening, the comments can be so long and involved that they all miss something important which comes up in the next scene. I know he is just trying to add good commentary -- a sentiment I appreciate -- but I guess I feel like it'd be better saved for the recap at the end. Even if it meant bringing up that part of the show's video again so he could better explain his point. Just my 2c, FWIW.
