I believe you misunderstood an important point concerning Gil-galad (around 5:00). Gil-galad is speaking about Sauron, the sorcerer and lieutenant of Morgoth, who the elves know well as a great deceiver. At this point in the show, he doesn't know that Annatar and Sauron are the same being, and he only finds out from Galadriel that Halbrand and Sauron are the same being (as seen in the SDCC trailer). So in his speech about how "...he gains the ability to sculpt their very thoughts", Gil-galad is speaking about the Sauron that the elves remember as Morgoth's ally.

Tolkien actually wrestled with the nature of orcs and their potential for redemption. He wrote about this in some of his letters. He found it would run contrary to his Catholic theology that no sentient being is beyond redemtpion. So making orcs beyond that capacity wasn't easy for him to sit with. So it's really odd to say that Tolkien just wrote them as evil. Yeah, thats what is published. But his actual thoughts are much more complex.
@TheJeh14 ай бұрын
@mileswright7294 The demons are sentient but are beyond redemption in Catholic theology, since their choice is already locked in. So are the damned. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say no rational being is beyond redemption from the beginning of its existence.
@mileswright72944 ай бұрын
@TheJeh1 I'm no longer Catholic so it's all head canon to me. But in regards to what Tolkien felt, it wasn't so clean cut as "evil beyond redemption." That's just not accurate to his later views at all. He wrestled with their origins so much because of this very dilemma. Consciously, he wanted to make LotR Catholic in the revision process. But in doing so, his views on the origins of orcs were never settled because he couldn't find a proper solution. There isn't one good answer to fall back on. Tolkien was not a proponent of completely irredeemable orc nature. But rather that their corruption puts them beyond any real hope. It's a metaphysical thing that has no real way to be nailed down. We're told that the orcs don't always bend to his will, except for when he has The One. So I have a hunch that may factor into their complete subservience in the show.
@TheJeh14 ай бұрын
@@mileswright7294 What you're saying is very astute. The thing about spirits (angels and demons), at least in Thomistic thinking, is that their cognition is nondiscursive, so it makes sense that their choice for or against God is locked. When you look at orcs, their reasoning process and access to information seems similar to humans before death, so the natural presumption would be that they ought to be redeemable just as humans are. On the other hand, Tolkien seems to have wanted some race that is reliably evil for the sake of the narrative, as is the case in much fantasy literature, so there is a tension between what he wanted for his fiction and what his theology requires. Certainly each orc would have had to have been redeemable from its beginning. By the way, if there is anything I can do to persuade you to return to Catholicism, please let me know.
@ZephyrOptional4 ай бұрын
Letter 153 to Catholic book seller Peter Hastings provides great insight on this subject. Nothing is all evil because everything is the design (music) of Eru. Per Eru, evil exists so greater goods can come to fruition through the free will of his children. Catholic at heart but Pagan in theme!
@mileswright72944 ай бұрын
@TheJeh1 I totally understand his need for a narrative that has a group that is wholesale evil. I just think people who whine about woke stuff thinking that's what this sympathetic orc arc is about are just really dumb. As for what should or shouldn't be done within the show, idk. I'm just enjoying that the showrunners are playing with these ideas and getting us to think in similar ways to Tolkien. There is no harm in exploring some of that. As for me returning to Catholicism, I doubt there's anything you could do for me. I have no desire, and it doesn't meet the burden of proof for any of its claims. What it would take is for God to reach out to me. No amount of listening to a fellow fallible human could nor should ever convince me to think I understand the governor of the universe. My take is: Let God be true, and every man a liar. I don't need anyone else being a self-appointed mediator for my relationship with God. But if there is a God, and he knows my heart, and he wants a relationship with me, then there's nothing I could do to stop him unless I'm somehow more powerful than he. But that's really it. God can speak for himself. I've retired from listening to other humans who think they can speak for a supposedly perfect communicator. I know they think they're somehow relevant to my walk with God, but they're not. They think God instructed them to preach, but really they read and listened to the words of other... People. As far as I can tell, it wasn't God. If anything about God is true, I don't need that information filtered through a fallible human like myself. A perfect message can never be transmitted cleanly through a dirty filter. I don't need anyone, just God. He has my number. He's a big boy. If he really wants to reach me, he supposedly could. But until that happens, I just have zero interest in relearning how to make excuses for things I can't actually demonstrate.

Khamul could be an evil tyrant that they must oppose... or a leading sorcerer and priest of Sauron's followers (perhaps in league with the "nazgals" or even their leader?)... or a valiant hero who tragically falls to his ring's corruption. I also just disagree with how you say this is not galadrial. That takes a lot of authority to say. Especially when we can easily say the first two seasons she learns she cannot fight physically with Sauron and when. If she learns that lesson and the next two seasons. She can become a great sorceress and learn how to use a much larger power. I have absolutely no problem with them showing that path.

Showing him a peaceful world, that's why he is so easily decieved by Sauron's appearance when it seems quite obvious to us that it is him. Twisting and taking over a mind is definitely within Sauron's power, so this is very good possibility. Look at what Saruman was able to do to King Thèoden. Its a nice storyline if true.

Here’s how season 2 starts…montage recapping Galadriel’s season 1 adventures from most recent to earliest - each scene shorter than the previous and with flashes from other characters’ perspectives…until the screen is filled with radiance humming gently. A voice says, “ Do you know why a ship floats?” Cut to closeup of Galadriel, lying still, eyes darting under her closed lids. She is drenched in sweat and tears. With a start she sits up and with a strained voice whispers, “Celeborn!” A hand glides in from offscrean, wiping away a tear. “Yes, lady, I am here. Do tell me what is amiss.” Galadriel takes the Kubrick stare and in a clear voice says, “I dreamt I was an asp-hole.”

3:00 My take is that people in universe wouldn't see him that way, and that we're peering through the veil as the audience. We don't need to play pretend mystery -- we all know the mysterious elf is Sauron and everyone who doesn't would end up getting spoiled beforehand anyway. Everyone knows Annatar is up to no good. 3:39 Perhaps Gil-Galad will understand and accept at this point that Sauron is back, and is describing a fear of his power to manipulate others... perhaps not even making a connection with the rings yet. After all, for all his individual power and vast armies, Sauron's deceptions are what truly shapes the Second Age. I think this is thematically going to be an ever-growing theme as the show progresses, especially if he eventually ends up on Numenor as we'd expect him to. Adar's comments a bit later reinforce this image of Sauron. 7:00 I can accept Sauron as being able to raise wights. I Imagine the Witch King's power was all rooted in Sauron's through his ring (and later through direct empowerment, such as the "added demonic force" shortly before his demise). This would be a cool way to call back to a book event that unfortunately didn't fit in the films. 7:30 I hope this is prophetic, or a manipulation of Sauron. I'll even accept the balrog rousing as some unknown terror in the deep, and the Seven being used to suppress it... for now. I remain confident that the two mysterious wizards are the Blue Wizards, and that the Stranger has been straggling behind his friend (and is now catching up). I expect they will get into shenanigans with Sauron's followers in the east, and likely will end up in conflict with Khamul. Alternatively, the new wizard-like character might be Khamul, as some sort of sorcerer before/after he receives one of the Nine. I'm wondering if Sauron's plan in this retooling of the story is that he's given the elves a taste of ringcrafting as Halbrand, and then comes as Annatar "help" them, and if it's known that Halbrand was Sauron, that they think he's now fled. Since we see *someone* gifting rings to the dwarves... this is an interesting question that can go either way: does Sauron sack Eregion (RIP Celebrimbor) in this season and begin gifting them out (so we'll see some of the men who would eventually become the Nazgul, including Khamul and the Witch King!) or do the showrunners accept the dwarf lore that the Seven were all gifts from Celebrimbor himself? I kind of like the latter, honestly. I am holding out hope that there's a real Halbrand out there who Sauron impersonated, that he *is* from a lost line of kings and will have an arc to redeem his good name... and that he'll tragically accept one of the Nine in his quest to defeat Sauron... I think that the Galadriel we have is meant to *become* the Galadriel that we know through an extended character arc. I hold out hope.

There is no reason to believe that it is going to be anything other than the bad fan fiction nonsense that season 1 was. You really can't fix a series when the 1st season was as bad as this show's 1st season was. The reality is that no one should have ever tried to make a series about the Second Age unless they were granted the rights to the Silmarillion. I have a strong feeling that a large part of the reason the show has been so bad is because they are so limited in what they can actually do based on the rights they own. With that said, even just basing a Second Age show on the appendices of the LOTR's, they could have done a lot better.

She is who she is during the LoR because of her looong life and the hard lessons she surely had to learn, made her that way. Also I don’t see the Tolkien-Bro-community ever being hard on someone like Aragon. He was allowed to run away and hide and make mistakes, but Galadriel is expected to to be born perfect. Sounds fair… And to be quite honest, I would love for her and Sauron to hook up, because it would make all the Tolkien-gate-keepers and fundamentalists cry so very hard…also I just love a unorthodox romance . This is already not Tolkien and the few characters not created by the writers, already get their own creative names, so as to not be confused with the real ones. Grandmabrimbor is my favorite. Anyway, you people believe you love Tolkien? How? This show has nothing to do with him. I usually don't watch Ghostbusters and then talk all about how much I adore Shakespeare because of seeing it. And even if you read all that Tolkien has written, you certainly did not comprehend a single syllable or you would either hate this abomination or act as if it doesn't exist.

Season two looking better than season one is a very low bar. I do hope the story line is better, it can’t get worse. Time will tell because Amazon does have it in them to still go down hill.

Loved your video. I want to make some points. Hope you see this. So I've read a lot up on this show before season one. From my understanding the Tolkien Estate is giving them 5 seasons to do the second age. It's to be approved by them, and if I'm correct they want it to fit perfectly with Peter Jackson's trilogy. On to my second point. I love Galadriel in this. I think by the end of this series she will resemble the Galadriel from the movies. We all know Celeborn is not dead, and that he will show up at some point. I think by the end of this season she will realize what's done is done. And make peace with that. especially if Celeborn shows up. I do agree I hope they explain why the elven rings were made out of order. Other then that excited for this season.

Funny how enjoying the show makes you an “NPC” but blindly hating it makes you…….a “freethinker”? A “real” fan? Some of you even admit to not even engaging with the show but still spend your time hating it online 😂 what miserable existences you all must have. I’ll be enjoying the show because the opinions of angry close minded nerds don’t dictate what makes a show “good” or “bad”.

Because atleast in Jacksons movies he tried to stay as true as he could to Tolkien's message and didn't do things out of order or unorthodox and made the characters feel like they are from middle earth he made Galadriel smart fair and tall in this show shes a whiney brat who wants her way the elves have Haircuts and fades 😂. From what barbershop 😂. These characters just don't feel Tolkienian

Look dont go into this series expecting it to be taken directly from the Silmarillion or fall of numenor you'll just be very disappointed. Im just glad that they basically keep to the lore. Yes they have made woke changes for the modern viewers but atleast we are getting middle earth stuff and not just sitting around waiting for nothing. My issue with the series is Galadriel's main involvment in the whole plot when in the books she was just in a forest with her husband trying to start Loth Lorien instead of acting as a general throughout the 2nd age when it was more Elendiel and Elrond doing that. Other than that show is fine. Not emmy material but its once again better than nothing!

If you want true pure Tolkien, don’t watch the show, don’t watch and complain in KZbin video comments, just read his books. I’m so sick of the complaining about the show not being some same exact thing as Tolkien. It’s a different medium, so right off the bat it has to be different than the books. Every single show/movie that’s based on written content is different. It has to be. It’s called reality. Stop complaining ffs.

Season 1 was a dreadful misstep with some of the worst writing I’ve seen in a modern production. It only really served as an introduction to themes, characters and places. Hopefully, we are now more in the thick of the actual ‘Tolkien adjacent’ story. And hopefully they’ve learnt from some of the huge errors made. It looks better. It can’t be worse. Surely.
@Halafas4 ай бұрын
To me S1 felt very Tolkien: slow, more interested in setting the themes and atmospheres than moving the story, focused on questions such as what is the nature of Middle-earth, how is Arda marred by Morgoth, what are the orcs, what does immortality mean, what is the dwarves relationship to their mountain and their riches etc etc. Very Tolkienian. This S2, on the other hand, whilst being extremely exciting, feels almost too action-focused. But glad to have Annatar-Celebrimbor psychological thriller going on in the midst of it all - that looks wonderful.
