This is it. The first episode of this subseries showcases an era when the networks provided kids of America a form of entertainment that made us imagine and dream. This is the 1950s and we delve into the beginnings of Saturday mornings. How it got started, what networks had done to provide that entertainment, the pitfalls and finally, look at the shows kids were watching back then. You might be shocked at how TV was back then. So without further ado, let me present you... the greatest story ever told

My older cousin always saw Hopalong Cassidy on Saturdays, but it was before my time. I remember at age 3-4 I saw the old Terrytoons cartoons(Mighty Mouse,Farmer Alfalfa,Heckle and Jeckle, Gandy Goose)on Saturday morning. When I was 4/5 I discovered Howdy Doody and Ruff & Reddy on another channel. Both shows ended in 1960,when I was 5/6. (They were replaced by Shari Lewis and King Leonardo, but that's for another site.:-)

Grew up in the 50s and 60s. Saturday morning cartoons were great. My siblings and I would have cereal at the coffee table while watching them.

That was very good! You definitely went above and beyond with television history. Not only you talked about Saturday morning cartoons, but you’ve also talked about some tv shows that are rather iconic or very obscure. I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ll talk about next as we get closer to the 1960’s. In my opinion the late 50’s and early 60’s is when animation had transitioned from it’s golden age to the early tv animation era (aka the dark age of animation).

I'd agree. The end of the Golden Age of American Animation came in the 50s with the demise of the cinema as primary vector for visual media. From there it ebbs and flows as new media and companies/studios rise and fall, leaning evermore into television.

11:21 WOW! Is this a direct quote? Is this the first mention of Star Wars ever? Is this where Lucas originally took the name? I know He took inspiration from the MENTAL Gene Autry serial "The Phantom Empire" ? Brilliant video as always by the way. Thankyou. It's such a pity you won't be covering the colossus of UK Saturday mornings that was "TISWAS"....as far as I'm aware nothing even remotely like it existed in the States in the late '70s. I suppose the closest they came was "The Banana Splits" but TISWAS was live and anarchic and the BEST THING EVER!!! It was AMAZING!!!

Al Hodge was most likely talking about the space race that was being to burgeon around that time. And Lucas was definitely inspired by shows like Captain Midnight and Captain Video. You have to remember. He grew up on the kind of content we did. Also he loved serials which these mostly were. that inspired Star Wars. That and Kurosawa films as well

I remember Crusader Rabbit when they aired it in the Philippines on GMA 7. But the same time as Spider Man was aired on RPN 9 the same time as Crusader Rabbit every Sunday

Interesting. Never ever thought these cartoons extended over to countries like The Phillipines. This was due to me being obvilious to other places outside of America as a kid. @@thecartooncurator I will subscribe to your channel so I can know the history of cartoons from the 70s until 2014 the day when Saturday morning cartoons have ended. Well, all the Saturday Morning Cartoons were aired in the Philippines like Scooby Doo was aired on GMA 7 every day Monday to Friday at 5 pm. I hope I'm right. But they never aired Kong the live-action series here in the Philippines they've aired only Land Of The Lost aired on RPN 9 or Leader 9. But all the Cartoons were aired after school. But not only cartoons but they've aired Tokusatsu like Goranger or Star Rangers in the Philippines. But some Tokusatsu they've dubbed in English like Bioman and some they dubbed in Tagalog like Shaider was aired on ABS CBN every Saturday at 5:30 pm. But other cartoons would never be dubbed in Tagalog they stayed in English. There is a new cable channel under test broadcast in the Philippines. The name of the channel is Timeless TV I'll keep you posted for more details who knows it will air Kong the live-action series
