Ugh, I love the "could go to hell but we'll probably be fine" line in Naked in Manhattan. It's such a quick and simple way to express that nagging internalized homophobia many of us have been fed through religion. You've worked through it (we'll probably be fine 🤷♀️) but it can still be there at the back of your mind at times

100% nagging feeling is such a good way of describing it - like a subtle stabbing with a knife and constantly questioning literally every personal choice and the relationships we have. I feel this too and I wasn’t even raised religiously but it’s this messaging we get 24/7 so can’t imagine how difficult it is if you’re raised in religion.

Love your reaction! Some context for California if you're interested she wrote it after being dropped by her label and having to move back home to MO to work at a drive through & as a nanny. She then decided to give music one last try and moved back to CA to finish her album, self funding and working with her friends to film all her music videos, & I'm so glad more folks are being exposed to her music now! She's so talented and has been working for this for a decade now! 💗

Love this context thank you for providing this- I love how she never gave up on her dreams and funnily enough the tribe she found in California helped build her up which is why finding your people is so important. Get your life Chappell girl!!
