Your history of boost and the ultra boost is missing some important things. 1. BASF originally worked with Puma to refine the foam and design midsoles, then somehow Adidas swooped in and signed an exclusivity deal. You can read about this in the lawsuit. 2. The original Ultraboost did not come with continental branded rubber outsole. It was the 'stretchweb' outsole, with rounded points. This was a very soft rubber, and was widely criticized among runners for its poor durability for a $180 shoe- the rounded tips could wear off within a few days of usage and the remaining rubber was very thin. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2mqhJ6ogtqjgsk This was corrected in the Ultraboost 2.0, when they introduced a redesigned continental branded outsole without the rounded tips. The original ultraboost flew under the radar as it was a top of the market running shoe until Kanye wore it.

Woah, boost was basically a huge thing in my high school life. I live in a town and during that time, was really hard to buy a pair of UBs or NMDs because of the shortage. Most peers who got it was by going abroad or ordering it online with exorbant resale prices. They were my dream shoes and thankfully got my first pairs of NMD and Ultra Boost on years 2017 and 2018 respectively. At this time, the hype for Boost sock-like sneakers were dying since it became more common (higher supply = easier to get a pair) and as you also mentioned, chunky dad sneakers were taking over. I had a friend who accused me of being an Adidas fanboy and that I always chant "Boost is Life" lmao. But honestly, I really love the simplicity and chill design of the shoes. They fit my personality more than the bright/colorful trendy ones nowadays.

@darrenk73934 жыл бұрын
They actually didn’t focus on performance, they focused on style which was the downfall. They never did catch on after a few wins in professional running because boost is incredibly heavy for a foam. Performance shoes started moving to large stack heights and light weight, which is impossible for such a heavy foam like boost. You have to remember, on the Adios, you could only place a small amount of boost in the shoe because of the inherent flaw which is the weight. Nike simply started to clean their clock in performance with the being able to increase the amounts of Zoom foam in shoes as it is so light, creating huge and high stack heights in racing shoes, more high tech weave materials, especially carbon plates, basically they completely overwhelmed Adidas in running with the best tech in every part of the shoe thus destroying them on the track. Check any photo of any marathon and let me know how many competitors are willing to not take the advantage Nike tech gives them. Literally, nobody wears adidas in marathons anymore. When a brand losses the ability to even be mentioned with performance and with an overwhelming lead by Nike in that area, pop and casual culture no longer covets that brand. Pop and casual follows performance, not the other way around.
@youveactivatedmytrapcard4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. To me, adidas should have split the UB into two shoes - one for performance, the other for casual wear. They tried to do both, and it failed.

Hey bro, been a big fan of your series and I'm learning way more than I ever knew about these sneaker histories, keep it up! A couple things about boost history you didn't mention though: 1. Adidas at first actually seemed to be LISTENING to the consumers. Sneakerheads loved the 1.0 primeknit pattern and went crazy over them. People posted their massive boost only collections. Life was good. Some people started modding their ultraboosts by "uncaging" them. They took an xacto knife and cut out the cages due to constriction on feet for a more "sock-like" feel. Around this time, hypebeast did a collab with ultraboost and came out with the first uncaged ultraboost. Adidas actually took note of this DIY trend and demand for uncaged sneakers and came out with their GR uncaged iterations. When the 2.0 primeknit came out with 3M, it wasn't exactly better in design but it was different. Sneakerheads still liked them but not as much as the 1.0. The 3.0 (terrible primeknit pattern and cloudy plastic cages) was a blatant slap in the face to sneakerheads who had been waiting on the return of the 1.0 primeknit pattern but with better and improved tech like the continental soles etc. The 4.0 saw a margin of improvement with less translucent cages and an attempt at blending the 3.0 pattern with the 1.0 pattern but it still wasn't the OG pattern. 2. @3:35 that's the ultraboost 3.0 not the 1.0 triple white 3. To me, at least, NMDs seemed more like a lifestyle boost sneaker while ultraboost was geared towards performance. This is evident in their collaboratoins. NMD had collabs with bape, nicekicks, pharrell, chanel, BBC. Versus ultraboost getting collabs with parley, college sports teams, sns, hypebeast. There was a bias of fashion and streetwear brands collaborating with NMDs over ultraboosts 4. The ones that started it all are the OG NMD red blue bricks and the OG ultraboost 1.0 purple black (worn by kanye) 5. Why did the hype die? A couple more reasons: Adidas wanted to milk the boost technology as much as they could while under exclusive contracts with BASF. This meant they were pumping out colorways as fast as they could. Initially, the abundance of collaborations and colorways seemed to keep up with the hype, until NMDs started sitting at retail stores (pharrell collab sitting was unheard of) and consumers and sneakerheads became fatigued by oversaturation. This was painfully obvious and it was only a matter of time for it to happen with the ultraboosts, which it did. Especially the continuous next gen iterations which never brought back the 1.0 primeknit sneakerheads loved and asked for. This similar phenomenon is happening with yeezys with colorway oversaturation. However, you could compare this to Nike and their constant colorway retroing and how that doesn't seem to overly fatigue the Jordan models (might not be comparable since jordan 1 especially is such a timeless classic). Then there were also complaints of the durability of boost. At first it seemed like walking on clouds, but inevitably the boost material would compress and become way less comfortable to walk around in over time. Not to mention that they looked terrible with scratches and stains discoloring the foam material and scratches messing up the primeknit material. Adidas seemed to have a history of listening to some sneakerhead community desires (uncaged) but not for others (2.0 and later primeknit design). I do admit though, that possibly the vast majority of people buying ultraboosts are for lifestyle or running purposes, not sneakerheads. So it may have been too niche a market to cater towards. Still, we saw adidas try saving the hype with recent 1.0 retros last year with the cream 1.0, og 1.0, triple white 1.0. These were great but IMO too little too late. Another topic slightly related: 4D. When adidas first unveiled this everyone lost their minds. It actually looked like adidas might start topping Jordan with their constant innovations (instead of constant jordan colorway retros). I remember personally going to the 2018 747 warehouse event and looking at 4D prototypes and the parley ultraboost DNA pair when it was a F&F prototype reselling for $5k+ easy. Ultraboost 4D (og black and f&f white) was also cool with their limited production runs and reselling for hundreds to thousands. They started collaborating with various boutiques to release the 4Ds which definitely met the hype with extremely low stock, but the midsole was always green. Sneakerheads also began diy and customizing by swapping the 4D sole with ultraboost 1.0 primeknit uppers. BUT again, IMO it was too little too late. Only now are we seeing more ultraboost 1.0 4Ds and 4Ds with other colors than the green og color (they do look sick though). Two years later adidas is trying to catch up to what little hype is left in the 4Ds and ultraboosts (trend had shifted to chunky sneakers and already is shifting away from that too...) Likely also since the 4D tech was hard to scale up for GR releases and to figure out color dying etc. I think adidas once said their ultimate goal will be to fully customize 4D sneaker soles to each customer's foot scan which is really cool and I think it might be a game changer for general consumers. Not to mention that yeezy and pharrell's relentless releases have been eating into the demand for other ultraboost and NMD colorways by sneakerheads considerably. Sorry for the rant, but my first hype sneaker purchase was an ultraboost 1.0 triple white when they first came out and it's what got me into sneakers haha. Some of this could also be subjective from my perspective, so take it with a grain of salt!

Yeah I need some context on these Nike I see with a red zip cable on them, what is that all about? I am no hypebeast see but I do like to look good, but as I've aged I won't be walking around with a zip tie hanging off my shoes! 😂

From a runner: I wore a pair of Ultraboost for two months, and wound up with a sprained Achilles. I love these shoes for walking around the city. But be warned: The squishy foam beneath your heel, when you run, is bad news.
@nunaoooo4 жыл бұрын
I didn’t got injured but I too find them “too soft”, who would guess... But yes, for walking it’s absolutely perfect.
@RossGoddardTV4 жыл бұрын
Must be your running style (not saying it's incorrect lol), I've been wearing various ultraboosts for running and I've never had any injuries. But hey everyone's different, like I can't run in nikes.
@robertjusic90974 жыл бұрын
Why?
@dramaskrybe4 жыл бұрын
@@robertjusic9097 Your heel needs firm support. Otherwise, every time it hits the ground beneath you, it sinks farther than it should. This motion causes your Achilles to stretch every time you plant and launch, which puts more stress on it than is normal. Then, if you run on hills, or uneven ground, it gets even more aggravated. Adidas is putting us at risk by marketing these as safe for running.
@dramaskrybe4 жыл бұрын
@@jeessicacisseej No, but that's generally a sign that you are either a) not conditioned to run yet, or b) you're using a pair of shoes that aren't right for your foot. Like, some runners need extra support on the outside of their foot when running, others on the inside. That's why you see so many different styles of soles. If unsure, I'd visit a store that specializes in running shoes, and ask one of the salespeople to help you find the right shoe. They're knowledgeable, and it's their job. Then, if you want to shop around, apply what you've learned to find the right shoe for the right price.

NB you could tell a story of how you purchased the shoe, but it’s not like vertical stripes tell some crazy story. Now if you believe shoes tell a story but the newer Ultraboosts don’t then that’s just silly. I am 100% confident that 99.9% of adidas customers don’t consider “story telling” when selecting their running shoes. You are the 0.01%.

I've only worn the Ultraboost uncaged and for a running shoe, it felt like I could brake my ankle every time I turn. My ankle just keeps wanting to bend left or right. For walking though it's really nice. Very comfortable and no pain. I'm not much of a shoe/fashion guy so this shoe is pretty much the only shoe I wear other than boots for work. Probably will either buy a newer version of Ultraboost or get a Nike running shoe if it still feels like my ankle would break wearing Ultraboost. So far I'm leaning towards Nike as I don't know if the newer Ultraboost will bend my ankle Everytime I turn while running.

I've never understood Nike's dominance in the market place, Adidas nearly always produce a far superior product IMO. I buy a pair of Nike and within 6-8 months they are done and I'm binning them, Adidas can last me 3-4 years of regular use. In the UK there tends to be a North vs South divide, with the north being predominantly pro Adidas and the South Nike. I think this may be to do with London being more influence by the States than the North of England is. I suppose at the end of the day "buy wot you like !" but for me it will always be Adidas!

You hit the nail on the head that Boost lacked storytelling because adidas didn’t invent it. Instead of adidas telling that story of how they tested the technology from 2007 to 2013, emphasizing patience and getting it right, they jumped on the hype train and figured that they’d right it until the wheels feel off. When Kanye said that Yeezy jumped over Jumpman, again, adidas drank the Kool-Aid. When I walked into a Marshalls in 2015 and bought a pair of Boost kicks for $49.99, I knew that it was only a matter of time that their downfall would be swift.

Dee Wells Man, you came up in 2015 though! And yeah Dee, you’re right. I also didn’t think it would last forever. Imagine if they would’ve been more innovative with the storytelling though? Could have been much bigger. Still quite the accomplishment though. One for the books!

Great video again, guys! Big up from Bulgaria! I work very close with adidas and I was really hyped when the 2019 UB came out. I bought it and too be honest - it's an amazing shoe. Probably not that good design-wise compared to the OG version, but still quite good. But the 2020 version really does not step up to the game. It's not that different from the 2019 except for some minor design details and really lacks inspiration. I hope that adidas will do something interesting and inovative in terms of BOOST and midsoles. Meanwhile - keep them vids coming! ✌🏻
