• The Rise of Ancient Is...
Prof. Israel Finkelstein is a leading figure in the archaeological and historical research of Ancient Israel. Throughout forty years of field work and study Prof. Finkelstein has managed to change the way archaeology is conducted, and to greatly influence the way the bible is interpreted, and the history of Israel is reconstructed.
Prof. Finkelstein is a professor emeritus at Tel Aviv University and the head of the School of Archaeology and Maritime Cultures at the University of Haifa. Prof. Finkelstein is active in the archaeology of the Levant and is an applicant of archaeological data in reconstructing biblical history. He is also known for applying the exact and life sciences in archaeological and historical reconstruction. Prof. Finkelstein is the current excavator of Megiddo, a key site for the study of the Bronze and Iron Ages in the Levant. Prof. Finkelstein is a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and an associé étranger of the French Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres.
Dr. Matthew J. Adams is an archaeologist who specializes in the Near East. He is currently director of the Jezreel Valley Regional Project and a Co-Director of the Megiddo Expedition along with Prof. Finkelstein.
Dr. Adams sat down with Prof. Finkelstein over several sessions to talk about how a lifetime of work has informed the story of Ancient Israel. These conversations became the series The Rise of Ancient Israel with Israel Finkelstein.

Very interesting. There is a lot of details that help support what happened. What I am missing is the influence of the late bronze age collapse (LBC). I understand the LBC as a serious climate catastrophy that mainly hit Greece and Anatolia, must also have influenced The Canaanite area. For the Greek islands total knowledge of the language was lost, which means that the intelligentsia died out without give their knowledge to the offspring. For Greece this lasted for at least 3 centuries. The first Olympic game after LBC was in 776 BC. One could speculate that the story of the drought and Joseph was an indication of the LBC. But surely there must be more evodence.

Thank you. We published two episodes about the collapse, one with Prof. Eric Cline and one with Prof. Finkelstein (Episode 3 of this series).

Joseph might be an explaination why Egypt survived the LBC or perhaps caused the LBC. Egypt was the main food producer, and if it stopped exporting food it would cause a huge food shortage in the eastern medi region. This would also impact islands and regions in the western medi that rely on trade to feed themselves. These people got the news from traders the countries that "fed" them are now stocking up and not exporting so they went to get it themselves. Egypt simply bought the sea people off with food and land in the end. It is also clear that the sea people took their families with them so there must've been a crisis at home.

Josefus writes that Shimon Maccabeus and the people of Jerusalem worked for three years to remove the citadel of Jerusalem, the "accra" or the "TEL" and dumped the material in the valley of the cheesemakers. See Antiquities Book XIII Chapter 6:7 Excavating in the Tyropoean Valley should prove if this statment in Josefus Antiquities, has any truth to it.

My daughter worked a dig for Mr. Finkelstein about 15 years ago at Megiddo. She Describes him as a pleasant man and seems to have liked him in that capacity. But she also says that he is the reason that she has lost a lot of trust in archaeologists like him in that Mr. Finkelstein would lose interest in a find or area rather quickly if what was found failed to confirm his "unique" ideas of dating or context, or worse, contradicted them. Listening to him in this video, I can understand why she says this. He seems extremely "selective" in the data he uses and ignores so many other contexts and specific finds which DO confirm the orthodox position of the historical texts of the bible. It's like Kathryn Kenyon saying that there was no pottery consistent with the date of Joshua's attack on Jericho when she flatly ignored her own people having found such in situ at the proper time levels. Both she and Mr. Finkelstein were engaged in furthering their own idiosyncratic theories in the face of common belief AND findings by others, attempting to cut out a niche for themselves by stretching things... badly.
