Great video. I feel bad for how everything spiraled down for Kim in the MLB. He was an introverted 20 yr old that was new to the culture while being super competitive and confident in his abilities. I believe that combination caused lots of misunderstanding. He comes on Korean TV quite a bit and talked about how immature and stubborn he was while he was in the MLB. He seems to have matured and enjoying the next chapter of life.

A few years ago I worked at this Korean company and sat next to this lady watching KBO online. I started talking baseball with her and when I mentioned BK, I learn Kim is kind of a big deal back home. Almost a national hero to South Korea. It warms my heart. As a DBack fan I fondly look back on BK. I think I'm not alone on that sentiment.

Yeah, a dback fan myself I knew a bit about him before I started researching this video, but I was surprised at just how much love people have for him. He deserves it though, he is a pioneer and a legend.

So sad that many good pitchers get screwed over by bad managers. Reminds me of Itoh Tomohito being overused and potentially Kurabayashi Ryoji being overused right now

Brenly was such an awful manager looking back on it. Guy got gifted with two of the greatest pitchers of that generation, but he had no idea what to do with a bullpen once they left the game

@The Diamond he did get the best out of alot of those hitters tho... but I agree.. pitchers wasn't his thing but I mean when he had the 2 or Miguel batista pitching they did well... maybe the gm sucked at finding talent

I always thought the criticism of Brenly I regards to Kim's usage in that series was way overblown when you consider how much better Kim was than anyone else in their bullpen, and the fact that he had been a starter during his career in Korea. Those back to back hrs were simply a freak occurrence and one of the most dumbfounding moments in MLB history; Kim & Brenly were just unfortunate to be on the wrong end of it.

One of the most eccentric players in korean baseball history. He also once threw his middle finger at korean reporters, and threw a baseball at an ump. At one interview while at NPB minorleague, he said "these guys here are bad at baseball" and also said "but if I were the manager I wont use me".

At the risk of being mistaken for a Bob Brenly stan, I gotta say that the decision to try Kim in Game 5 was completely defensible when you evaluate the decision *against the other options Brenly had*. Who else was supposed to pitch that 9th? Mike Morgan? Albie Lopez? Greg Swindell? Kim may have been tired and demoralized, but he was still far and away the most talented reliever they had.
@TheDiamondBaseball
@TheDiamondBaseball 2 жыл бұрын
I can understand this argument, and I also understand he was the 9th inning guy, but I also just think that you gotta have a plan b prepared in a series like that
@lvoverride
@lvoverride 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheDiamondBaseball Maybe it isn't realistic, but I would've liked to have seen Randy Johnson throw the 9th on 3 days rest since he would've had another day off before Game 6. I understand that's not really a thing and thus wasn't considered, but then throwing 1.1 innings a day after throwing seven (as actually played in Game 6-7) is even less of a thing IMO.

All the east coast fans are like that. I know they even boo their own players if theyre not performing. But even till this day, I dont understand that. I honestly dont know what they are getting out of booing their own players. Its not productive and theyre making their own players feel like shit. Cody Bellinger, Max Muncy, and Joey Gallo all played like garbage last season, batting below Mendoza line but i never boo them in my home stadium. Aaron Judge was even booed by their his own fans during his series with Cleveland and Astros. I dont understand the east coast vibe and booing their own players because Im not from there but it had to be getting on Kim's nerves.
