That's why GM nearly imploded in 2008 while Ford was able to adjust and not require a government bail out. I started seeing people put “Bentley” kits on them like come on dude! My granddad used to work at a steel mill for a while, and then did construction on the PA turnpike and Lincoln Highway. My grandma was a nurse for the school district. My granddad was a hustler tho! He can make money out of nowhere. He loves to work. Even at 80, he still pours concrete, chops wood, and moves heavy furniture. He’s worked for, bought, and paid off every vehicle he’s owned. Another price increasing item, not mentioned, is the decades of Government intrusion, that started in the mid 1950’s…I went from Cadillacs and Buicks, to Mercedes in the mid 1980’s, primarily for their diesels…I drove Mercedes Benz automobiles, and GM full size SUV’s, until the early 2000’s. I was also blessed to have a very nice collection of GM automobiles, ranging from 1957 thru 1975, primarily Cadillac, Buick and Pontiac full size Convertibles and Hardtops, almost all with the optional, big block V-8 engines…I found driving those, especially the latter 60’s thru 75 models so enjoyable, and just plain fun to driver, my last Mercedes was a 1998 sedan. I am currently pondering, one more new automobile, and the only car I’m considering, is a Cadillac CT5, a stunning automobile, which has received great reviews, at a very good price point.

*MC NUTTINGTON* I think the exteriors are about the same but the Lincoln’s interior is still superior imo. Cadillac’s have just too many screens and flat buttons. The navigators dials and switches just feel so much nicer as well as the dash which just feels bigger. It always comes down to preference but as someone who’s been in both I still would give it to the navigator which I consider perfect besides the rear. The aviator is what i would consider the peak of modern Lincoln

No. A "traditional" Cadillac appeals to a demographic that's dying. Things change. So did the world. It's not 1977 anymore and those types of car buyers are either dead or almost dead. Wouldn't make any financial sense to build a car for someone who won't live long enough to buy another. It would be a waste of engineering and time. They need something to keep up with the new age consumer. The first gen CTS was a great start, but then they ended up making it an old persons car again as time went on. They have the handling and acceleration down, but quality is horrible. That's what they need to improve; quality and reliability.

Why don't you go looking for at nice 1976 Cadillac. I drove a 1973 Cadillac Coupe dé Ville for 9 years untill 1994. I loved every mile in it. Would love to have one again. But they are expensive now. My 1989 Cadillac is not the same. I drive a Continental Mark IV now, and have done since 2002. Still would like to add a Cadillac 1973/75/76.

Cadillac is flopping because they're trying sooooo hard to be something they're not (BMW). Nowadays they focus on trying to be sporty rather than luxurious and quantative over qualative. Whatever happened to the day's when Cadillac didn't need to chase other brands to rain supreme ? GM seems to have forgotten their roots , the 50s era Cadillacs were (And still are) some of the most exquisite luxury vehicles ever made. The worst mistake they could've done was dropping the names (Elderado , Fleetwood , DeVille , etc). These models had decades of heritage to Cadillac as a brand , *NOT* that ct6 and xt5 bullshit !!! Least we still have the Escalade but that's not saying much cause they aren't that impressive as of now. Even though it's unlikely , I would've love to see them produce something similar to the elmiraj or ciel , probably 2 of the closest things we'll get to a classic Cadillac.

So they admittedly had no purpose at all. Meanwhile Now the USA has more wealthy 65+ year olds than EVER before!! Right now!! How was American luxury bad?? Four Seasons hotels did not go out of style. America has a good design heritage.

I liked the Cimarron. It's interesting that it was dismissed as looking too similar to Chevy sedans of similar size, but the equally derivative Escalade was welcomed with open arms a few years later. The only thing that really differentiates it from the similar-looking Suburban and Tahoe is the grill and headlights. Shape-wise, it's pretty generic. Which is fine, I guess, but at this point it seems like people want it for the Cadillac badge and not its looks.

What may also be a difference is that the Cadillac division fully embraced the Escalade as a Cadillac (as opposed to the Cimarron which was marketed as "Cimarron by Cadillac"--as if to say in the latter case "yes, we'll admit we badge it and sell it, but it doesn't really represent us".

@@timbarrie8637 My first car was my dads 98 DeVille and as a 16 year old in 2008, I put that car through HELL, and in the end, the only problem I never encountered with that car (and between suspension, exhaust, alternator, rear bumper, etc.) the only issue I never ran into was with that monster Northstar engine. That thing was a Beast and literally overkill. I could literally burn rubber in that plush couch on wheels

I've thought a 1950 Series 61 sedan would be an interesting car to have--in black of course, although other colors were available. However, I've noticed that many of the cars featured in the Cadillac sales literature of the late 1940s up through the mid-1950s were red, although this color wasn't that common on the actual cars.

Being a lifelong GM fan, especially their fifties and sixties years, I kept hoping that they would step up and away from the General and create a kind of superluxury car that was distant from the usual German suspects - in style and in performance. Like they did back then. A Cadillac was a CADILLAC. I guess the idea that the top of the line defines the parant company somehow escapes GM. They owe Cadillac a chance to be the standard of the world.

I am a multiple BMW and Lexus owner that switched to Cadillac last go-round for my DD. I have a 2016 CTS 3.6AWD I've owned since new; and for the first time in many years I've had the car past the 3 year mark and continue to love driving it almost 4 years in. Even driving a bodystyle released for the 2014 model year I am regularly complimented on the looks of the car ( I feel that the CT6 was a further improvement but is a really big car). I find that the normally-aspirated engine is a breath of fresh air in a turbo-charged world, even if it gives up significant real-world performance to the almightly BMW B58 engine. The athleticism of the chassis was top of class in 2016, although I understand that the Germans have now caught up again. As with any modern car with lots of electrics/electronics I am concerned about out of warranty repair costs (my BMWs have required far more costly warranty repairs); I will be buying a GM B2B warranty and will hang on to the CTS for at least another 3 years at which point I will be considering an all-electric car for my DD. My only real complaint is the ownership experience - you are still dealing with a GM dealer, with GM service departments, and Cadillac Customer Care is a joke. My dealer is actually pretty good and my service advisor excellent, but he is constrained by the processes that apply equally to the Cadillac owner as the Chevy Aveo owner. I feel that at the very least they need to go to the "dealer within a dealer" as Lexus initially did, where you deal with Lexus-dedicated staff and processes.
