1. Endowments usually have large bond holdings for current income. Complaining that a "hybrid" portfolio didn't match the S&P 500 is foolish, and I think Bloomberg knows it. 2. The UC endowment which (according to wiki) handily out-paced all 3 endowments mentioned for 1, 5 and 10 year horizons, does cite a large part of their growth to an index devoid of oil and tobacco (per "Chief Investment Officer" reporting. So...

How did Yale compare to the S&P 500 over the same time period? Oh, and didn't Harvard buy land in the Amazon? How is that going? I would put the money in Berkshire at a minimum.

It’s pathetic that this woman is on TV perpetuating a contest of who can have the largest endowment. What a sad state of affairs where returns are all that matters…grow up lady.

She's not perpetuating anything. She's a finance reporter. She's not driving or promoting investment strategies, but just commenting on them. In no way was she encouraging people to donate either. It was pretty bland, objective commentary. She's providing a full explanation of what people care about, about the size of the endowments and the general strategies these universities are utilizing. A person could easily come to the conclusion these endowments are too big, I won't be making a donation cause they don't need it.

​@@rhine2y6y Sorry, but I disagree. She describes Harvard's change of strategy as "meddling" which literally means 'unwanted interference'. She is sniping at Harvard's attempt to move away from 'returns at all cost' and even refers to UT as "nipping at their toes", literally creating a competition. There are many reasons why Harvard should not be a hedgefund- and it seems like Harvard agrees with that somewhat based on their actions- but this lady goes on TV with her wry smile and tries to embarrass them for not subscribing to her religion of sadness. Maybe they rejected her many years ago...
