Appointed by the late dictator, Francisco Franco, as next in line to the Spanish throne, Juan Carlos I was long respected as the king of Spain’s democratic transition. But today, he may turn out to be the cause of the monarchy’s downfall. Money laundering, tax evasion, suspicious gifts ... the scandals never seem to stop.

The monarchy Will Survive just fine. I hate this Doom and Gloom lines. Juan Carlos did an amazing job for a long time for Spain. The country is already a democratic republic in most ways and the monarchy helps to keep it that way. Many of the people who gather this way are those who call for the breakup of Spain with regards to Catalonia and other regions. That's the real truth behind this stuff.

I am spanish and from what I can tell you. There are usually 3 people in spain. 1. The guy who thinks that the king saved Spain and that if we become a republic the communists/americans/jews win. 2. The people who wish spain had a 3000th revolution where he took out the king and became and thinks we could instantly turn to sweden in 2 weeks because the money the king takes from taxes would turn us into oil princes. 3. ppl that go “oh yeah the king..... uhh yeah hes cool i guess” The old king JC did fucj yo with some of the money laundering but the whole point of having a king are for these reasons. Its a pretty food idea to have a Spanish king that can build strong relations with the Arabic kings where they will be able help heavily finance Spanish projects. If we were a republic, we would just become like Portugal which is just a poorer spain that speaks a weird version of Spanish. Oh and tourism and shit I think in the big picture the king has done more for the kingdom than bad. But thats just my opinion. So yes i support the king

Spain should rethink their decision. The problem with not having a monarch head is having many people involve in the state decisions and control. Which is even harder to point out who is doing wrong and not. So having single monarchy head would centralise the focus to whom the people should voice their concern. Constitutional monarchy has a positive side like UK and nordic countries. Trust me, absolute republic is NOT the best solution.

Monarchy, what is it good for?
@olidojosephd.9054

For unity. Symbol of culture, heritage, nationalism, and tradition. Politically neutral head of state. To prevent prime minister from becoming dictator. For tourism. For coup d'etat to be less likely (I'm not saying monarchy is 100% immune to coup d'etat but coup d'etat are less likely to occur and succeed under monarchy rather than republic, soldiers in a republic swore loyalty to the constitution or the republic, soldiers in a monarchy swore loyalty to the monarch, that's why the 1981 Spanish coup d'etat which aims to derail Spain's democratic transition and return to Francoist dictatorship failed in the first place, because most of the army are still loyal to King Juan Carlos I who ordered to crush the coup attempt and that time "Spain's democracy has been SECURED at last").

@@olidojosephd.9054 the French have thriving tourism and we all know what happened to their monarchy. I don't know how bowing down to a foreigner is going to make for a more united nation

@@lynnebarnes3840 I also heard the same reasoning that "France haves more tourists than the UK but they don't have a monarch anymore" but honestly they should read the "full story" first. France have more tourists than the UK because it haves more beautiful palaces than the British, one notable example is the Palace of Versailles, but how did they build that? That's because France was an absolute monarchy thus the king controls all of the budget and can spend the money on building more beautiful palaces than the British at the expense of the "3rd Estate's" quality of living. While the British transitioned their country into a "constitutional monarchy" in 1688 and have their first prime minister in 1721 because King George I was a Hannover German that can't speak English and thus most of the money goes to welfare of the people while the parliament restricts King Georges' (yes, georgeS) budget so what they can afford is a dull mansion house which is now the Buckingham Palace (that's why its boring, it was never intended as palace, it's a mansion house). If the French transitioned early to cosntitutional monarchy, it would be also impossible to build palaces like Versailles which will generate your supposed to be "thriving tourism." Plus if you don't know, from First to Fourth Republic, France was super politically unstable those days. Do you know why are they politically stable nowadays? Because war hero Charles De Gaulle decided to give the presidency more powers (MONARCH-LIKE POWERS) than the prime minister and the parliament/legislature. And here we are today, France, on its Fifth Republic, have an "elected king" in any sense.

@@olidojosephd.9054 the "elected king" is not a life long position, it is not a hereditary position, he's probably not inbred and he can be voted out. Buck house, was a private home first, but, it's not the only attraction in England. Many people including those in Cornwall would be better off without Monarchy, the history, the Jewels, Kew Gardens, (Queen Charlottes project) and the rest would remain.
