Even as a youngster growing up in Prince Edward Island, he had ambitions to make it big on Parliament Hill. Eventually, Mike Duffy’s knack for talking politics on radio and TV brought him close to the seat of power in Ottawa, until as a newsman he seemed as famous as the people he covered. Now the disgraced Conservative Senator has become the embodiment of what many Canadians see as a wasteful institution, and a lightning rod for those who want the Senate abolished. The fifth estate’s Linden MacIntyre gets the inside story from people who have known “the old Duff” since the early days of his career. My mom retired from Air Canada and knew Mike Duffy. She was able to get myself and classmates a tour of his Ottawa-based show on CJOH. I would have to confirm but I am near certain it was after he left CBC. My classmate was on cloud nine as we hung out on the set and what I saw was a guy who just liked to have people around to talk tall tales of Ottawa; and what I found interesting is that his focus was entirely internal to Ottawa politics. It was interesting too because my classmate became a professional journalist in the U.S. and I think he, like me, would not have suffered from the overstep Duffy had in this Senate scandal. Duffy had three fail safe ways to avoid this situation after it was revealed, but he instead overplayed what he perceived to be his political capital on "the Hill". This observation is made clear at the end of the program. And that is what I find really strange: as a Hill journalist he ought to have known the rules on loyalty and privilege but he appeared to simply ignore it. He is a very strange character at the end of the day ... a Hill groupie of sorts.

The Senate shouldn't be abolished; it should be reformed. For areas of low population, they get no democracy at all due to always being outvoted. The US Senate addresses this by electing two Senators from each state, regardless of population.

Lol 7 minutes into it and it's obvious the guy's a crook. He lived in Ottawa since the 1970s. He had a cabin in PEI that he didn't live in. He ran his campaign as though he was from PEI even though he lived in Ottawa. Once he gets elected, he starts claiming living expenses for having to live in Ottawa (where he's already been living since the 1970s). To the tune of $90,000 he claimed he needed, for the incontinence of not being able to live in Prince Edward Island ..where he didn't live. How is there any debate on this?

It makes no sense that the senate is appointed by the PM. I can't believe it is allowed. The senate should be voted in separately by the public, to ensure that they are not just a bunch of the PM's lackeys. The way it is now is very flawed, however I don't believe the senate should be abolished, as they provide an important role. However, it should not be left to the PM to decide who they are, when they are supposed to be impartial!!

One of my exboyfriends told me years ago that Duffy and him had a " expereince" that was at best UNTOWARD. whenever he saw him on TV news he would shudder and recoil in disgust & shock. So much that i knew better to never probe for details for fear that i would open a huge hornets nest of issues, bad memories and problems.

maybe I need to rewatch this again, in order to under the huge gravity of the situation, but it just seems to be like this was a tiny insignifiacent scandal, compared to the more atrocious policies the harper government was implemented. but it is astounding that if the little guy or any bartenders or small business plays with the books a little bit they're punished to the full extent of the laws, whereas goverments, big banks, and people like rob ford, get a tiny slap on the wrist, as worst they lose their jobs with a generous package, and aren't prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
