Sly and jak and daxter were my first video games. I remember not having a memory card for the ps2 and would just play the beginning of them over and over. Once I was able to save and progress, it was like I had discovered another dimension.

These games are by far my favorite. I was shocked when I saw the fourth game after I got with my girlfriend, so sometime in the last 8 years, but man. Episode 4 of sly 2 was scaring the shit out of me as a child(5yo maybe) because of the dark setting. The fact that, for the first time ever, Bentley was alone and had to fight his own fear to save his best friends got me thru that and I will never forget it. Thinking at this right now made me realize why i give so much importance to my friendships :')

If there were to be a 5th & final Sly Cooper game this is what I'd like the plot to be: Bently, Murray, Carmelita, & Dimitri get a scientist owl to help them build a time machine to go back in time to rescue Sly by using his DNA to track him. But once they find Sly they can only come forward a little at a time, & every time they stop they encounter another Cooper member that they have to help. They could even have Penelope return, but this time as the pirate Black Beard. By the 5th or 6th level, we finally have Sly meet his father, but since Sly knows his father has to die, he's conflicted on whether to try to save him or let him die again. Meanwhile, the owl scientist who helps rescue Sly gets injured through these adventures with the Cooper Gang & he builds a robot body for himself, which we later find out is Clockwork. At the end of the game, Sly & the rest of the gang make it back to the present, but Clockwork steals the time machine, goes back in time, & he gets revenge on what happened to him by making it his life's work to go after the Cooper family. Through this 5th & final game, the story comes full circle as Sly inadvertently created his family's mortal enemy in the form of a bootstrap paradox. The game ends with Sly & Carmelita finally getting together as a couple with Sly ending his life as a thief so he can have a family with her.

Sony has proven in the past two years that they can pretty easily bring back games if they want to, and not even have to put too much time and money into it for them to be good. Just look at how they've handled Ape Escape. Despite their big anniversary plans falling through, they've slowly been sprinkling a couple games from the series onto Playstation Network every few months. All they had to do with those is add a simple emulation menu for screen filters, orientation, a Quicksave and Load feature, and a rewind feature. Then they sell them for $10 a pop. They could totally do this for Sly Cooper.

They put a good amount of detail into the games and as a kid, I appreciated every single one and how diverse they were. I hope this game is never forgotten and continues to be loved by more people to come.

I'll have to second the Neyla twist. As a kid at 14, I was genuinely shocked when Neyla showed her true colors and I'm pretty sure that was also my first plot twist. And as pointed out, there is some subtle foreshadowing going on that upon repeat playthroughs just makes it clear how well-crafted the story was!

Thank you so much for this video. I can't even begin to put into words how much the Sly Cooper games meant to my childhood. I remember playing the first one over and over and being SO excited for 2 and then 3. I too have a special relationship with the first 2 games. I did get 3 when it came out but it didn't feel the same and took me awhile to really love it like the other 2. I got a PS3 just for Sly 4 and then didn't actually finish it for like 6 years because it felt too different. It's ok, but definitely has a different feeling to it. Just didn't feel as special. But the original trilogy just holds a huge place in my heart. They were games me and my mom would play together, she even beat all the games on her own and still goes back to them sometimes. Last time was back in 2020. Not sure what happened to my original copy of 1 but I still have my original 2, 3, 4 and Collection games. Just everything about the games scream charm. The characters, the style, the music, the voice acting. Nothing compares. I hope I live long enough to see a proper Sly 5 someday.

Its amazing how similar your experience during the wait for thieves in time is exactly the same as my experience. I was 11-12-13 years old during the time between the announcement and release. And exactly as you described I soaked up every interview bideo, gameplay, article and everything during the 2 year pre release. I played and replayed the trilogy in preparation and also spent my free time thinking of how amazing Sly 4 would be. I also was dissatisfied with the game after it came out and couldn’t tell why. Now in my 20s I’m not mad anymore. Sly 2 is my favorite also for the same reasons you stated.

I honestly wish Sly Cooper had more of that type of anime shonen influence instead of the Saturday morning cartoon vibe that most of the games have. It would allow for more deeper story telling and characterization to be done instead of treading along certain story themes so as to not increase the age rating of the games.

I think the developers pretty much admitted that in some of the commentary tracks in the first game. They obviously had to bleep them out, But you can gather from context that that's the franchise they were talking about. I mean, a master thief getting chased around the world by an Interpol agent who's got a long and storied history with him. I wonder who that reminds me of...

I'd say the biggest mistake the 1st game made was not having the fiendish five use the abilities of the pages of the thievius racoonus that they had stolen, Raleigh ninja jumping, Mugshot rail sliding, Mizz Ruby going invisible, and so on. I also think that a proper conclusion to the series should involve Sly discovering a thieving technique of his own to finally complete his arc as a member of the cooper clan, and even technically go beyond his own father since his dad never actually got to write down his laser slide ability. I think the time travel business offers a nice reunion show plot without actually pushing the story any further. Also, I'm surprised it's never really expanded on that Bentley and Murray aren't just Sly's friends, they're his adopted brothers and technically just as much a part of that cooper clan as he is, especially since their own parentage never comes up, nor do they ever seem to show any interest in it even when exploring who they are separate from Sly.

The message of Sly 3 falling on deaf ears can be said for so many things. I'm all for letting sleeping dogs lie, most of the time when things get drudged back up for remakes/reboots/sequels from different companies it rarely turns out as good. The comments sucker punch gets are disgusting about telling them they need to make 5 whenever they talk about sly or when they did the anniversary merch. Seems like Sly 3 needs to be played and understood by more people and actually listen to the lesson it teaches. Learn to love and let go, it can always be experienced again. 4 felt like it was made for an even younger audience than the trilogy and lost its charm, ie the story and character arcs being non-existent from past games even. Plus all the character designs are a downgrade alongside the incessant speech lines. Not to mention the ending sequence where the characters are chirping back and forth but there is zero animation for it during the fight.

Such missed opportunities in Sly 4. Certain ancestors could’ve been so cool to meet and LeParadox? What a letdown LeParadox was! Clockwerk is such a cool and mysterious villain. The Claw Gang was full of personality as were the Sly 3 baddies but that low down dirty skunk is so lame compared to all them! Sly said it best, he’s such an idiot who exposed his whole operation cause of his ego! That whole thing about him being from a rival clan of thieves really should’ve been expanded on instead of being left as a last minute reveal and the boss battle should’ve been so much more than a QTE! Like they could’ve had it so we tangle with his ancestors in the various time periods. Also did nobody on the staff question why Sly 4 is just one plot contrivance after another? Even Sly lampshades how unbelievable the gang’s luck has been!

While I have issues with Sly 4 (being the game, I replayed maybe 3 times where I've replayed the trilogy countless times. Hell, I'm replaying Sly 1 and 2 right now.) I can say that Sly 4 feels very hollow compared to Sly 3 all I can think seeing cutscenes of Sly 4 compared to Sly 3 is "You wouldn't do that. You'd do this." This game series is my all time favorite and I have nothing but good memories with it.

J, I'm glad you uploaded this video man. I love hearing game reviewers on the favorite video games they hold dear to them. The franchise that I hold dear and is part of my identity is Sonic The Hedgehog. I played Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Daxter when I was kid and grew up with them, but I never heard of Sly Cooper or heard there was a 3rd Playstation Platformer. The only time I saw or got to know Sly Cooper was in Playstation Move Heroes cutscenes on PS3. But this long video of yours encouraged/inspired me to give the Sly Cooper Trilogy a try because it seemed very interesting. I played Sly 1 (I give it an 8 out of 10), I'm getting into playing Sly 2 (I give it a 10 out of 10), and haven't played Sly 3 yet. But I'm glad I'm getting into this franchise because of you. And I love your reasons for why you say Sly 4 isn't for you. You explain that since the Sly Cooper Series is a kids platformer game franchise, it doesn't offer you many things as an adult gamer, even if Sly 3 has way more content to go around, or if Sly 1's time trials keeps you coming back to test your skills and knowledge. So the only thing that can keep you invested or anchored into the games would be the story, artwork, and script characterization. When you played that Scene from Sly 2 with Sly talking about how haunting the structure was, it really showed me what you were talking about. You feel like Sly 4, despite that it could be more fun to play than the trilogy, is missing the main things from the trilogy that made you love the games so much. But still, I don't think there's any other reviewer that reviews these games with so much emotion than you do. Like I said, your video is what made me want to try Sly Cooper, and I'm grateful. I love your "Sonic The Hedgehog Is Distinctive" videos the most on your channel, but this Sly Cooper video of yours shows me a franchise that you hold dear to your soul and want to share your love of it with others who may know it or haven't experienced it. Keep up your good work J.

As much as Sly 4 has it's flaws in writing, there definitely was an effort in detail and some respect for the source material. One example is with the first two ancestors Ruichi and Tennessee Kid is their levels and abilities are on par with their descriptions in the first game. In the feudal Japan level Ruichi was the one that discovered how to perch on rooftops and ledges so the level is designed to complement that. Likewise in the old west level Tennessee Kid was the one who mastered rail grinding and there are sections where he grinds on rail to progress.

I don't know what you mean, sucker punch ended the sly saga with sly 3 with a very good ending. The character arcs are finished. I had a good time with it, and still enjoying watching/playing the sly trillogy. Edit: MAYBE they left the door open for other studios, but only for sony's marketing reasons. We know what happends, when other writers/studios work on Allready finished storylines OR just new writers that continue stories, but lack the understanding & respect of inevented systems of stories: Sly 4, Everything at borderlands 3, Disney star wars, RWBY, boruto, DB super, middleearth (like rings of power) etc.

And even when he talks much sh-, he DELIVERS behind all that sh talk with combat Experience & dark arts + he was cunning. Not only that, he sticked to his promise and gave back the laptop when he lost the fight (a CERTAIN sense of honor, what sticks to his Character) & he gets a + Point because he was able to find the cooper gangs hideout and stole the Laptop in the first place, what was a total off-guard for the cooper gang. Sly 4 didn’t feel like a sly game but at least sanzaru tried. As someone who has replayed the trilogy over 20 times I couldn’t even finish 4, they couldn’t replicate that magic of the originals.

This is the thing about stylized graphics, they age so well. It kinda makes you think to yourself how little we've actually come in terms of the "wow" factor in games. I look at the Jak series and sly cooper and I see things that even some modern games don't do well, yet these were made 20 years ago. Certain styles, physics, moves, it just hit different and still does when I look at it. There was passion back then, real artists. The jump from ps1 to ps2 was INSANE. Then ps2 to ps3 or Xbox 360 was crazy too. Since then, not so much.

@@SlyCooper1920Sanzaru Games president was the one that cut the ending due to the size restriction of the PlayStation Vita sadly did not have time to add it to the PlayStation 3 within the short time frame given to be ported, as such it was turned into dlc that never made it due to lack of sales No idea why said president did not scale back levels or removed some them instead of cutting the actual ending

The implication of that statement when people say it is that childrens minds should absorb complete nonsense and grow up as rtrds or psychos. Only people that hate kids or are complete airheads say things like that.

@@Ottselracing sounds like we are on a similar page here. yeah, there is plenty of things made for kids that can be well written, its about as stupid a statement as the "think of the children" arguemnt when an adult is made uncomfortable and you normally see both of these more in the west then in eastern countries, mainly north america and western europe

I remember being pissed when sly 4 came out. The game itself was fine (not great or even good, just fine), but all those levels with the motion controller that no one cared about (the controller not the levels). I had bought a second hand ps3 and it didn't come with a controller that had that feature as almost all 3rd party controllers appeared to think that was useless. Took six months and an extra $40+ after buying the game brand new just to play the darn thing. 😢

I wrote up a plot for a Sly 5 game. So, my sly 5 idea involves a weakened Sly being trapped in the past, and being found by an old enemy: Clockwerk, who initially mistakes him for an ancestor and attacks, him, injuring him greatly, even mauling him. Upon defeating him, though, Clockwerk realizes that *this* Cooper is from the future--and furthermore, based on some of Sly's comments he let slip up at the beginning--namely, shock that Clockwerk was alive, and rage at seeing the cyborg Owl, Clockwerk figures that something must have happened to him in the future. Deciding to capture him, and using a device he's created, he manages to rip Sly's memories from him and gets the highlights of his life, including the defeat of Clockwerk. Rather than be enraged and kill him out of frustration, Clockwerk decides he must find a way to become immortal, beyond the cybernetic replacements of his body he's already done. Consulting his research, he smiles upon finding mentions of a crystal that could grant one unending life--only catch is, it's guarded deep in the depths of Atlantis, the shining city. Only catch is, he's too big and not powerful enough at the current moment to get it. Luckily for him, he has a Cooper from the future, with skills learned from ancestors that aren't even born yet--and Clockwerk offers the captured Sly Cooper a deal--He'll share a portion of the power of immortality with Sly, and build him a machine to send him home, but Sly has to get the crystal for him first. And just to make sure Sly plays along, Clockwerk makes some...cybernetic modifications to Sly to patch sly up in order to let him move again, but Clockwerk has the control switch for them, and if Sly tries to backstab him, Clockwerk will turn off the cybernetics, leaving Sly crippled and helpless. Left with no other choice, Sly agrees, but also noticed something when Clockwerk was flipping through his memories--a newspaper from the day when Thieves in Time started, mentioning a clue on a tablet found in Egypt leading to Atlantis. While going through a hastily constructed training course set up by Clockwerk for him to get used to his cybernetics, thinking quickly, Sly finds a blank tablet and etches out a rough map on it and inscribes the word "Atlantis" on it, along with a small Cooper symbol and Clockwerk's wings disguised as hieroglyphics, and then buries it, hoping that it was the clue that was mentioned, before Clockwerk begins to take them to Atlantis after the training is concluded. Flashing back to the Present Day, Bentley is going through news and comes across an article with a picture of the tablet, and is gobsmacked when he cues in on the symbol. Calling up the gang and Carmelita, they decide to steal the tablet and follow it to Atlantis, surmising that Sly is sending them a message from the past. The rest of the game follows two parallel plots: Sly in the past being ordered around by Clockwerk, but leaving clues and hidden items for his future crew, while in the present day his Crew has to manage without Sly as their Thief in order to solve the clues he's leaving behind throughout the exapansive city of Atlantis, and try and piece together what's happening, and maybe even save him. At the climax of the game, Sly manages to get the crystal, but his crew has managed to lock on to where he is. As removing the crystal causes the city to begin to sink, Sly has to escape to the top of the city, where he faces off against Clockwerk. Clockwerk disables Sly's cybernetics, but by this point Sly has managed to heal a good bit, and is able to try and fight him. When Bentley's portal opens up, Sly attempts to escape with the Crystal, but Clockwerk intercepts him. Unwilling to let Clockwerk have it, Sly attempts to destroy it, and as they grapple over it, it shatters. The shock of losing his chance at Immortality gives Sly the opportunity to escape, and Clockwerk is left seething--before noticing that there are two shards left behind. In the post credits he's shown designing the Hate Chip*s* This leads into a potential DLC where Penelope finds the second hate chip in a buried lab of Clockwerk's and ends up using it as part of a means to create a mechanical army...aaaaand brings Clockwerk back ultron-style when she does so, with a shot at a redemption arc when all of her machinations ends up with her losing her hands to the evil owl.
