Something to add about the non-controversy surrounding zoella: it wasn't just one school that didn't want to study her anymore, an entire exam board dropped her. Background info needed for the non-Brits: when you're 16 you sit tests based on 2-3 years of learning in both core subjects (like maths) and ones of your choice (like media studies). These are nation wide and are very strictly controlled- everyone does the exact same exam on the exact same day at the exact same time with no prior information on what the questions are and are watched by adults to make sure they don't cheat. Their papers are then sent off and marked as part of a large system by random teachers or ex teachers from across the country. There are multiple national companies/organisations that design the content that is taught and the tests themselves. By dropping her from the exam content, they basically meant that probably over 100k students (just my estimate) who would've studied her didn't. Dropping her from the course meant she was no longer being taught to students as an example of a successful online creator all because she was an adult women with normal adult women needs. I completely understand her anger since this was an absolute insult on all she's worked for since she 100% deserved to be taught as a successful creator.

Joe has kind of blown up again after his stint on Strictly Come Dancing, which personally got me back into watching his content. He also ended up dating his professional dance partner Dianne and wow they are so cute I love them both. I think they've been together for like 3+ years now. I think the reason the reaction to the 'one pound challenge' was so harsh was because it was supposed to be about educating people about poverty. If I remember right it was connected to a charity that helped people living on/below the poverty line i.e. £1 a day was the amount the government aid people living in poverty in the UK had. The point was to show people how hard and unhealthy it is for people to live like that. Then to have someone like Alfie completely ignore that to treat it like a quirky KZbin challenge insulted a lot of people. Also these are the safer group of british KZbinrs. There's a whole cesspool of British KZbinrs around this time.
@OrangeJuice1
@OrangeJuice1 10 ай бұрын
Right, I think the reaction stemmed from the fact that his idea of this 'challenge' came from his privileged mindset. Writing off a privileged pov as just 'someone who's ignorant' doesn't address being privileged or its implications on under-privileged groups.

I would argue that actually Joe Sugg is doing the best out of the brit crew now! I guess you can't really tell this if you're just looking at his youtube channel but he took part in Strictly Come Dancing (british Dancing with the Stars) in 2018 and made it all the way to the final with a pretty good shot at winning. He was very popular, becoming the darling of all of the mothers and grandmas who watched the show whilst also having the support of the younger people who knew him from youtube. Now he is the BBC's go to 'young relatable person' and often pops up as a guest on charity events and in minor presenting roles. He also started dating his dance partner Diane who was somewhat of a celeb in her own right from Strictly. The two have a channel together now and make couples content I believe. In my opinion, he has completely eclipsed his sister in terms of popularity. Ask a lot of (older) british people and they will know him without ever having heard of Zoella. He is basically the only youtube personality in the UK who has 'made it' in traditional broadcasting

I think he was able to stand out because he actually is an entertaining person. Everyone from the Brit crew were sooo bland, they just happened to get famous at the right time. And even if Joe did partake in the blandness he also was able to be entertaining on his own. It also help that he never got into any big controversy and was able to transition into the tv media at around the time the Brit crew was losing their spark.

My biggest issue with all those British influencers is that all of them lost their relatability as they grew richer and richer. Especially when they were continuing to try to be relatable, while also being completely out of touch with how most people live. I had the same issue with FleurdeForce and some other unrelated youtubers from the era. I think I unsubscribed to most of them before a christmas when they were suggesting christmas gifts I could never ever afford.

The thing about Marcus Butler is that he also kind of found a new audience through his girlfriend. Him and Stefanie Giesinger have been dating for a few years now. She won Germanys next Topmodel a few years back and through that became a major influencer in the german scene, she also still models. I think they also started a fashion brand together? Yeah, so these days I think he is mostly just living out his dreamlife as her armcandy 😂 It‘s just so funny to me that that is never really brought up in these kind of videos bc nobody outside of germany really knows Stefanie

Jack & Dean, Sam, Evan Edinger, Dan Layton, Hannah Witton, that Irish one that did drunk interviews with celebrities, and every now and then Irish Melanie Murphy would get in the mix. They always gave me the same sister-vibes but Jenna was able to grow and mature with Julien and because of that, her channel changed but it felt so natural and genuine and in line with her personality that she was able to keep and expand her audience. You somehow have managed to make deep dives into all of these different people that my brain will periodically remember and I am so grateful because I can listen to you coherently tell a story instead of spending like 4 hours reading different wikis. Thank you! I can’t wait to watch your other videos you are really entertaining!

tory is slang for the conservative party and although i guess their equivalent in america would be republican, they are much less far right.

I’m pretty old, so I don’t actually know any of these people. I was young before the internet was a central part of life like it is now. I really appreciate how you cover these incredibly specific things from internet culture that would have no contact with otherwise. It’s fascinating and so entertaining. Love your channel💛

The England obsession at the time with the teenage girl demographic went CRAZY. One Direction was the biggest music group or you had bands like The 1975 and Arctic Monkeys if you were “cool and alternative.” For the “nerdy girls” they were watching Doctor Who and Sherlock. Every type of teenage girl was in a chokehold.

Thought I'd awnser "what's that dude doing now" from the start... VeeOneEye was more part of the group with Emma Blackery, Lukeisnotsexy, Dodie, Evan Evanger, MusicalBethan etc rather than the Zoella crew. But part of the British KZbinr blowup none the less. All existed in the same sphere but were slightly different (imagine like a giant school with different cliques, so you all know your classmates but have separate friend groups). He (like Alex Day) decided to abuse his power by getting with young fans (won't go into detail here) He is now a heavy drug using crazy guy who essentially has become a hippie, off the grid "shrooms are life, the government are lizards and capitalism is doom" etc and essentially tried to leave behind all his past despite still giving off major vibes.

tbh i'm glad that the standards for content on youtube have evolved past only vlogs and stuff, my parasocial relationships with some of those ppl was out of control and while it was probably at least a bit harmful for the audience, it could be so much more harmful for the creators (yeah i'm talking about dan and phil i used to be a demon okay i admit). meanwhile commentary youtubers have way better boundaries set between them and their audience, even though i believe the parasocial feel is part of the nature of the field, it seems much more healthy for both parts with commentary channels (at least from what i see nowadays, though i'm way past 15 at this point so maybe i'm just not in the loop anymore)

I stopped watching most of them after the collab boom of 2013-2014 but I still go through phases of watching Zoe and Alfie. I don't think they are very good at handling controversy and they are both a bit airheaded so I get why they turn people off, but for me it's still my comfort content. I was really happy when they announced the pregnancy just because I know how much Zoe has always wanted to be a mom, and it seems like that really is her main focus these days - with a sprinkling of videos here and there just to share pieces of her life when she has the time.

tbh a lot of the craze surrounding them was also about how mediocre generic white people doing not much but looking good (and by good i mean fitting eurocentric beauty standards) were the height of entertainment in the popular taste in the early 2010's, and that has changed a considerable amount since then - and i say this as someone who watched their videos a lot at the time lol
