i still watch dnp and to me, it always felt that except for louise (and, to a certain point jim), they didnt feel comfortable with most of them. especially bc during vidcon they'll shove vlogging cameras to their faces and use the 10 seconds clip of them as a the miniature. for what they've said in the past year or so, they didn't like a lot of the 'brit crew' people, although they've never really said names

Also this was back when nobody had to label advertisements and brand deals. Can you imagine what kind of money these girls made with their monthly favorites and haul videos?! Cramming 10-15 brand mentions into a video that probably took them 2 hours to film and edit. Insane! That whole era was just one big fat unregulated cash grabbing marketing sham but I loved every second of it. And yes, I am too still wondering about little Marthamoo 😆

What a throwback 💀 loved the vid but one thing that feels important to remember is that they were all contracted to the same talent agency, Gleam, so I think you have to look back realise how much more calculated the entire thing was. Looking back without the teenage naivety they were really more like colleagues, intentionally working together to enhance their agency's network by cross posting and rewarding investment in their combined stories and dramas ...

You always come off well through the camera, you are always engaging, but it's like you CAME ALIVE in this video. And I think it's the pointer, or something to do with your hands. Incredible! You sound INCREDIBLY confident (and you are always so well researched and know what you're talking about). I think you found your secret sauce.

i think another reason why we as an audience "grew out" of watching their content was also because they had grown up as well... i remember i started watching them doing friend trips and going to eachothers houses and filming silly challenges and then one day zoe and alfie were looking for a new house cause they were practically married and moving in together... i still enjoyed the new lifestyle they were growing into, but as you said, it was not that relatable anymore, and not just because they were getting rich but also cause as a 13 year old girl, it was too ~grownup~ for me... it felt like i watched the whole arc coming to a clean end, like a slice of life tv show or something and the characters finally reached their "happily ever after"

everyone talks about the main brit crew but does anyone remember the secondary british crew that was like dodie clarke, hannah witton, hazel hayes, jack howard, lucy moon, evan edinger, leena norms, savannah brown etc.? the group was less defined there were more people that flowed in and out of it but they all collabed and they felt a little less 'family friendly' than the main brit crew. I think they sort of went all separate ways? they felt a little more relatable because a lot of them were uni students and talking about life in your early 20s like dating/parties/drinking/studying/working and mostly they didn't get too rich off yt because they were less famous. when I was in my teens (and already feeling too old for the og british crew) I was more interested in their lives as it seemed like a glimpse into future early 20s life. still not a very diverse group though

I had a really complicated relationship with the brit crew growing up. I grew up poor and in quite an abusive situation so seeing these rich people just get richer was kind of annoying to me. When they would complain about the stress of vlogging it irritated me so much because like, no one is making you do it, you're filming daily because it makes you hundreds of thousands of pounds. They were just so privileged and not self aware it drove me mad. At the same time, I couldn't get enough. Watching their hauls and the overconsumerism was almost cathartic for me as a kid who could never buy anything. Their life was so crazy it was hard to believe they lived in the same country. When the scandals started I stopped watching them and started watching commentary and it just made me really bitter about how they were always making this shit to make money when they already had enough. I remember this one specific video where Marcus butler and I think alfie deyes were talking about would Marcus quit KZbin if he had the money and they said oh if you had a million pounds and Marcus said that wasnt enough to live on... it blew my mind. My parents earn about 16k a year now, my dad works 10 hours 6 days a week in a bed making factory and my mam goes 5 days in the sewing room. They would never have that much money and yet he said it wasnt enough? Blew my mind

Reliving my childhood through this video and i LOVE IT. Can't believe 7-11 year old me owned every one of these books and all the makeup and beauty products. This era of KZbin is seriously such a time capsule for me and so many other people and I'm obsessed with the way you showed it all. Also for the record, Louise outdid everyone with her book and channel nobody could do it like her amen

bro I don’t care Zoe will always have a special place in my heart. she had my 11 year old self in a chokehold, I had her beauty products and I still own like three of her books 🤡

I think it’s something about her like she’s so radiantly positive and 2014 fairy lights bright, like it should feel super fake and disingenuous but with her idk I think she’s really like that like it seems like she’s always happy and even at a young age I knew she would live a happier and more fulfilling life than I ever could 😅 and as depressed and self deprecating as that sounds I think it’s like the christian girl autumn effect where everyone Stan’s that girl cuz she is just completely live laugh loving her way thru life and we (all the people who stan her) wish we could have even half that level of personal happiness. i think it’s mostly just me over analyzing it though 😅😂

22:10 I also feel like one of the phenomena happening in the 2017 british vlog sphere was that the dodie-hazel hayes-jack howard-bertie-savannah crew were getting more popular bc they were now the ones who were relatable and more earnest* in their vlogs. At least that's what I personally gravitated towards at the time 😊

Finally someone started talking about the Brit crew!!! This was such an iconic time, and no one ever talks about it and how great thus was to experience on KZbin. (I’m American) I miss those days so much man… everyone grew up

goddd unless you were actually around at that time, it's hard to describe just how popular these guys were. what an odd phenomenon. I had the biggest crush on caspar lee. i'm a year older than you so this drew me in right away.

this is literally my entire childhood in one video. the joe vs caspar prank videos and tje vlogmas had me HOOKED and then they collaborated with the american crew (tyler oakley, joey graceffa, troye sivan) ?? i never realised how planned out their ‘friendships’ were but i honestly lived for it

The amount of nostalgia that I just experienced is otherworldly. What a CRAZY piece of internet history!
