"I don't want to hear about the economy either!"
When The Sopranos aired back in 1999, it's safe to say that it got off to a tremendous start. As many fans and critics raved over the shows impeccable writing, acting, the cast of characters and their growth, the series' directing, and cinematography. But as time went on, views, interest and ratings began to fall when it came to everyones favourite family to hit the small screen on Sunday nights. But why did this happen? Did audiences just lose interest in The Sopranos? Were there other television series that came about during The Sopranos' runtime? This is the "Rise and Fall" of The Sopranos!
What are your thoughts about the rise and fall of The Sopranos? Let me know down in the comment section below your thoughts about the series' ups and downs! 👇🏻

If I'm being genuinely honest, I would say it's been one of the most impactful shows of my lifetime, and therefore, there are so many episodes that stand out, that it made me feel like I was a part of the action, lol

The problem with the Sopranos were the plots that they didn’t reconcile. Two in particular, we needed a follow up on the dealer Quickie G and we wanted to know the health status of the hotdog vendor who was too generous with onions.

The fall came about due to Tonys own hubris. He ended up becoming everything that he spoke against. He judged everyone that came before him and all the mistakes they made and he ended up making those same mistakes.

it's surprising to me that Italian-Americans are still beating that drum about mafia films giving a bad name to Italians. Italians are considered by most to have the best directors Scorsese/Coppola, the best films Godfather I/II/Goodfellas, best actors Deniro/Pacino, and the best tv show. Plus mafia films have given careers to dozens of great Italian actors. Take the win

It’s because all they did was argue and annoy each other and get fat. David chase purposely made the characters darker and less likeable on purpose to remind us they’re bad people. If you want to make characters realistic and unlikeable, along with a darker overall show, don’t be surprised when people don’t enjoy watching it?? (Tony’s breathing, wheezing and accent during the final two seasons is so insufferable it made me want to turn it off)

$13M per season, I think, hurt JG. Living well through eating well causing weight gain along with substance abuse, and personal demons, I believe, did not help matters with his heavy breathing and wheezing while working.

To me the series started its decline with Tony blundetto and the class of ‘04 storyline. A Tony’s cousin named Tony? Guy gets out of jail and wants to earn legit? Come on… he basically started a war that lasted until the finale and died. Seasons 5, 6A and 6B to me are tough to rewatch. When I think of sopranos I think of seasons 1-4. Seasons 5, 6A and 6B are like a weight that’s being carried too much.

Just imagine if Joe Columbo were still alive when the sopranos was on tv, it would've been quite something to see an actual mob boss throwing a fit via his civil rights organization over the show for its "negative depictions of italian americans".

I don't think you could say that The Sopranos had a "rise and fall" as a TV show. Let me explain... Look, even the greatest TV shows slip and slide through peaks and valleys. And in this regard, The Sopranos is certainly no exception. But every time you thought The Sopranos was gonna fall off the cliff, David Chase always found a way to remind you why this show was an undisputed classic. And this year, we're celebrating the 25th anniversary of the show's debut. By the way, let me go one step further: I think the final ever episode -- Made in America -- is one of the greatest series finales ever made. Enough said.
@Hammerhead547
@Hammerhead547 4 ай бұрын
I'd say that it fared better in terms of how it went out than my personal favorite tv show of all time (Rescue 911) did in its final seasons. It got screwed over by the network four different ways: (A): they slashed the production budget without telling anyone working on the show. (B): they forced the producers to rely on segment reruns to fill out episodes and seasons for the last three years it was on tv. (C): they bounced it around on the schedule for two seasons (C): they cancelled it with no warning. And this was a show that was still doing 6's and 7's in the ratings when it was abruptly canceled for no reason.

A pilot episode is a “standalone episode of a television series that is used to sell a show to a television network.” It’s basically a testing ground for a series as to whether a show will be successful. However, it is NOT the first episode of successive seasons. The first episode of each season is just that - the first episode. Each season does NOT have a pilot episode, simply a first episode of said season.

While watching the series for the first time, the thing i noticed that i didn't like about it was the lack of finality with stories. Like the Slovak dude that Paulie and Chris kidnapped never came back to bite them in the ass with the Slavic mob, or Dr. Melfie's SA never had a resolution, just things like that bothered me. Other than that, it's a great show.

Tony's demise was started by Paulie he snitch so many times on many people to Johnny Sac and allow Johnny to manipulate him over and over he took advantage of his relationship with Paulie which caused a lot of tension between the two families, all those issues overlap into Johnny run as boss but what put the final nail in the coffin was his inability to handle his cousin Tony, he went against NY which was his demise of his entire crew/family. Tony fall was he didn't take the war serious and his crew didn't either Bobby was out buying Toys and Sil was caught lacking. I don't think Tony's fall would have came if these events didn't occur Tony's bad choices led to his fall including when Johnny wanted Tony to whack Carmine Tony made very bad decisions which always caused him issues as the boss.

The Cuban Missile Crisis..."That's why you gotta live for today." said Georgie, before he took a viscous beating from Tony. The Sopranos series took a turn, after 9/11. In the following years, everyone around the world was gripped by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Can you see the parallels between Tony growing up in the 60s, and Tony dealing with terrorism within his community in Newark? Those guys buying credit card skimmed numbers from Christopher, gave Tony some concern. So much that he even ratted them out to the FBI. Could this also be a reason why some people stopped watching Sopranos?

The Soprano's entire familyi fell because they were ethnically cleansed out of Newark. After the 1968 riots, their entire family fled Newark to protect their kids. They lost everything. Houses, businesses, the churches they built, the restaurants & taverns they went to. They never recovered. The 1968 riots would have been like the 1804 genocide if they could have gotten away with it. There is no way the Soppranos could be considered the oppressors in this situation. They are the victims.

I understand why some felt that way about Season 5. For me though, much of the first half of Season 6 was more difficult and some things that felt out of nowhere in what felt like a test on how much of Tony's repugnant side we could put up. Tony always gambled but "Chasing It" Makes him such a reckless gambler in a way that feels completely forced. As does his sudden awful attitude towards Hesh. Outside of Silvio and Junior Tony Trusted and Respect Hesh and his advice more than anyone.. I will never fully buy that he would just turn on him the way he does because he's not making as much money from the Esplanade with Carlo in Charge. I enjoyed Vito's coming out arc and a contradiction again with Hesh that Tony wasn't willing to just burn Vito going from underling to top earner and an asset to both himself and New York. It just feels like it could have came a bit earlier for me though. But it happened. Even the weakest of The Sopranos is better than most things you'll ever see and even episodes like Chasing it served a bigger purpose in most ways.

Ya, but that actually happened in the NJ mob. That's what got the real mobsters of NY and NJ talking about the show. Actual FBI wiretaps caught members of the mafia talking about how realistic the show was. People don't understand how significant Sopranos plot lines are within the context of the NY mob.

@robertlee4172 dude first of all you're all over the place. There is nothing you could tell me about the mafia that I don't already know. How that correlates to the necessity of focusing on a half season arc of a gay romance is beyond me however

@@KMacMerlin ?wut I gave you my ultimate "DUH!" It wasn't a half season. Vito didn't turn gay after a midlife crisis. Corky and Christopher discussed this. Pay attention.

weren't you shitting in your diapers when the Sopranos first aired? I'd rather see this topic covered by someone who watched it during the original airing.
