Very informative! I really think ESPN has declined in their coverage of hockey and I hope that when the next TV contract comes up that TNT gets the bulk of the games and ESPN either goes away completely or has a minor role.

bettman has certainly done his share of good things like starting the winter classic and stadium series traditions and bringing hockey back to winnipeg but ofc yah he's had some questionable things too for sure like his view on concussions, the way he handled the kyle beach scandal, lockouts, especially the 2004-2005 one, the way he handled the last three weeks of the 2019-2020 season, ending the leagues affiliation with NBCSN in 2021. What a well said video as usual 👏

Gary Bettman has been the commissioner of the NHL since 1993, the same year that the Montreal Canadiens won their 24th Stanley Cup. On March 12, 2025, CBS Sports will acquire the remaining 3 years of a current 7-year contract to hold the 1st half of the NHL’s media rights as well as rights to the 2025, 2026, and 2027 Thanksgiving Showdown, the 2027 Stanley Cup Finals, and the 2027 NHL Awards from ESPN, ABC, and TNT Sports, so beginning in the 2025-26 season and running through the 2027-28 season, CBS Sports Network will hold rights to at least 75 exclusive national games per season, the 2026, 2027, and 2028 NHL Awards, and the 2025, 2026, 2027, and 2028 NHL Draft, TNT will retain rights up to 72 exclusive national games per season, the Heritage Classic, and the Winter Classic, CBS will hold rights to the 2025, 2026, and 2027 Thanksgiving Showdown, 28 late-season games on Saturday afternoons per season, and the Stadium Series, CBS Sports will hold rights to the All-Star weekend with the Skills Competition airing on CBS Sports Network and the All-Star Game airing on CBS, CBS and CBS Sports Network will share in coverage of the Stanley Cup playoffs with TNT and TBS, holding rights to “half” of the games in the first 2 rounds and one of the conference finals per season, and CBS will hold exclusive rights to the 2026, 2027, and 2028 Stanley Cup Finals.

Gary Bettman's legacy summarized up; 1. 3 league lock-outs under his watch = More then any of the big 4 NA major sports leagues (NFL, MBL, NBA & NHL). 2. Put on the strictest salary cap-hot of all sports leagues. 3. 6 NHL teams have been relocated under his watch; Minnesota North Stars, Quebec Nordiques, Winnipeg Jets, Hartford Whalers, Atlanta Thrashers & Arizona Coyotes. 4. His pet project of having a NHL team in Arizona have for decades proved not be working, yet through help kept them going. 5. Killed off the Olympics for ALL NHL players = killed the hockey world from having there the best players in respective nation and also killed chances for future HOF players like Alexander Ovetchkin & Evgeni Malkin from ever winning a Olympic gold or a medal overall (2018, but 2022 No Russian born players was allowed anyway.)

1) Every major population center in Canada (except one) ALREADY HAS AN NHL TEAM. It's literally just a matter of time. 1 Toronto Maple Leafs (5,647,656) 2 Montreal Canadiens (3,675,219) 3 Vancouver Canucks (2,426,160) 4 Calgary Flames (1,305,550) 5 Edmonton Oilers (1,151,635) 6 Ottawa Senators (1,068,821) 7 QUEBEC (839,311) 8 Winnipeg Jets (834,678) 2) Quebec City has more people than Winnipeg. 3) Winnipeg sold out every home game from 2011 to 2020...41 games a year for 10 years straight (until Covid-19 pandemic). All this talk about Winnipeg having bad attendance is Americans trying to take the Jets away from Canada, don't believe me? Capacity in Winnipeg at the MTS Center is "15,321" and the Jets averaged...13,490... That is a drop of 1,831 fans or 88% capacity. 13,490 is not good. But the number is misleading since Winnipeg is the smallest arena in the league at full capacity...so any drop is noticeable. BUT 88% capacity...is better than Buffalo OR San Jose... AND Winnipeg generates more money than Buffalo or San Jose... 4) Every Canadian team generates money for the NHL. Between 2012-2021 every Canadian NHL team generated revenue for the league (in millions usd) - Montreal (+678.2) - Toronto (+634.2) - Edmonton (+139.4) - Vancouver (+215.9) - Calgary (+70.1) - Ottawa (+50.9) - Winnipeg (+4.9) 5) Between 2012-2021 thirteen American teams lost revenue for the league (in millions usd) - Florida (-195.9) - GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM - Arizona (-141.6) - GARY BETTMAN RELOCATION - NY Islanders (-132.1) - Carolina (-108.8) - GARY BETTMAN RELOCATION - Tampa (-74.4) - GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM - Buffalo (-59.9) - Anaheim (-79.6) - GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM - Columbus (-76.0) - GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM - San Jose (-13.3) - Nashville (-64.1) - GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM - Minnesota (-55.1) - GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM - St. Louis (-43.9) - Colorado (-23.5) - GARY BETTMAN RELOCATION Fun Fact: Between 2005-2010 the Atlanta Thrashers set the record for most money lost by any NHL team in history...$130 million in losses in 5 years Florida losses $200.8 million more dollars than Winnipeg (the smallest market in professional sports). "Hockey Markets" like Minnesota and Colorado lose money... But EVERY TEAM IN CANADA GENERATES REVENUE FOR THE NHL (A REVENUE SHARING LEAGUE). Which means the smallest markets in the NHL...Ottawa, Edmonton, Winnipeg all have to share their profits with Miami, Phoenix, Atlanta, Los Angeles-Anaheim...it's just pathetic. This is Gary Bettman's NHL. Let his legacy be remembered.

@@sampicano Wow that was some statistics. I will be honest to say I did not know Winnipeg had less population then Quebec City (not region, but city itself) and yet they have the Jets while Quebec non. Its interesting how Bettman regards value contra reality.

@@WarioSaysSo And we are voices yelling into an empty void....NHL will fail in Phoenix, Houston and Atlanta AGAIN...unless, literally, unless Bettman passes away....then a NEW COMISSIONER may actually understand the finances of the league he is overseeing... Just look at this...Florida losses $200.8 million more dollars than Winnipeg Winnipeg...the smallest market in professional sports...using Canadian currency....generates 200 MILLION more than Florida.... Winnipeg = +4.9 million profit - which they shared with Tampa and Florida...through revenue sharing. Miami = -195.9 million losses Tampa = -74.4 million losses It's the most pathetic league on Earth, but only because Gary Bettman is an 80 yr old Jewish Lawyer from New York with no prior hockey knowledge before 1993. All Bettman can do is collect 10 million USD a year as a paycheck. Bettman makes more annually than Sidney Crosby. FACTS. Look it up. #GaryBettmansLegacy

TNT has shown a clear driving interest in hockey broadcast, far more than ESPN, Bettman has done a great job at expanding the game, but leaves much to be desired (current streaming deals are a disaster) I definitely boo Bettman for the rule changes though, dissuading the clutching and grabbing was fine but the changes through the 2010s was awful.

He is a weak component of the NHL because what I want to see to keep the game FAIR has not been addressed. The salary cap is a complete joke and the way refs officiate is also a big joke. So an example of garbage refs is they let so many penalties go and we have a large community that defends that ...fine but they are oh so quick to make the shot over the boards call like instantly every time no free passes. So their inept officiating can ruin the =fair balance of a game they let one team get away with interference all game they cannot generate any offense but make that fast over the boards call and it is a game deciding powerplay.
