Serpico is one of my favourite characters in Berserk.. but as of Vritannis in the Falcon of the Millenium Empire Arc.. his character arc has appeared to be put on hold somewhat. So join me in this series where I discuss what makes Serpico's arc so good and where it began to stagnate

Serpico did not have straightforward fight like guts vs griffith Do you think serpico can defeat any of the major apostles, even with prep? I think griffith severing zodd's arm is more impressive than anything (pre magic) serpico has done. If serpico fought guts in a duel, on without a weird handicap for guts he wouldve literally died in one panel. Pre eclipse griffith wins, unless he's lured into a trap where serpico has every possible advantage which probably wouldn't happen considering griffiths tatical prowess.

@@DaedalusR To be honest, his argument doesn't prove that pre-torture Griffith would beat pre-magic Serpico. But neither does any argument for Serpico prove he'd win against pre-torture Griffith. That's because we can only scale them off of how they performed against Guts but at a different point in time and circumstances. Griffith fought a weaker Guts on even grounds and lost soundly. Serpico managed to give a stronger Guts a harder time with a massive advantage but still lost twice. Not to mention the fact that Griffith didn't have his usual calm mindset during their second duel as noted by Judeau himself. And Griffith's feat of cutting off Zodd's arm *in apostle form* is a feat of strength instead of combat ability, regardless of whether or not he got assisted, it proves he has the strength to cut off one of the strongest apostle's arm. Serpico so far hasn't produced a similarly impressive feat without his magical fetishes. When Serpico fought Guts, Guts could probably 1v1 Zodd in his human form but he'd still get soundly defeated 1v1 against apostle form Zodd.

Thanks for making a video on Serpico! He's one of the best characters of Berserk! Don't think i've seen a character going so much in depth, with the symptoms of child neglect. His traits are so detailed and common among people who's grown up in similar situations. How he's had to set aside his own feelings, for the sake of taking care of his mother. You can even see the exact moment he becomes numb, in his backstory. When he's beat up by the other kids and is told not to fight back. That's why his dynamic with Guts is so interesting! Guts represents everything Serpico has repressed his whole life.

As someone who was used as Farnese's personal whipping boy from the start, I think Serpico is wary of how she might receive that information. Will she accuse him of lying to her? Will she be angry at him for keeping it a secret? Would she send him away, or devise some other means of punishment? He has a tendency to avoid anything that will upset her, and with good reason. She literally burns heretics.

8:16 Guts wasn't off-guard. Look again, Guts turns his *GOOD EYE* away from Serpico, which is how Guts reacts. Guts never turns his bad eye to Serp. But yeah, Serpico's tactics far surpass Guts. Using a sheer cliff, and then those Moorish arches at Vritannis, was genius.

Serpico is good at tactics and avoiding strikes however Guts has far more experience than Serpico in close calls and how to strike an opponent all while not being prepared for what’s going on and making the most of his situation. Serpico isn’t good at taking advantage of scenarios on the spot but needs preparation. Like with that water dragon deer creature once Serpico was caught off guard for being arrogant he could have easily been killed. Also both fights Guts could have killed Serpico

On battle,no. At the cliff he (Guts) didn't have time,he had to run to get Caska quickly.At Vritannis he didn't even care about the environment,he just accepted the challenge. Serpico is a sly fox,a cunning bastard,and he may have better planning. However Guts adapts to almost every environment,he reacts and use his tactics at the same time. He's a fucking genius.

Gabriel Felipe on the second fight Guts knew what Serpico planned and didn’t go all out at that time as when he gave the final strike that stopped the fight he showed Serpico if he were serious he could have ended things quickly but he wasn’t there to fight Serpico and saw him as an ally/friend so he accepted his challenge as there was no getting past Serpico without challenging him

really glad you made this one, Serpico is my favorite secondary character and probably my 2nd favorite after all (after Guts ofc) so it’s extremely frustrating to see how he’s been treated. He got an entire two chapters devoted to just his backstory, which I feel gave him a level of importance to the story that wasn’t really followed up on - especially since Miura made his entire character an auxiliary one. Everything about him revolves around Farnese, but her story has had so little to do with him that he’s been completely cast aside outside of action scenes where he gets to show off his skills.

There was a fox that was being chased during the King’s annual hunt scene of the Golden Age Arc. I always compared that Fox to Griffith, but now I see that it is Serpico. Instead of being frightened by Guts, who stopped in front of the fox and barked at it (which I think was Miura’s attempt to compare Guts nature to that of a dog) the fox observed Guts very calmly then just went to the side. I think that’s the nature of Serpico. He holds pure clarity when in battle, except for when Farnese is in danger. Griffith is completely a hawk. Genius. Egotistical. Soaring high. It’s not exactly that he holds pure clarity, it’s more so that he’s looked up at and his very being and ambition can provide clarity to others. Edit: the reason I compared it to Griffith was because Griffith was never afraid of Guts, he liked watching Guts nature, and always admired Guts, but never over his ambition. The fox is watching Guts’ nature, maybe out of curiosity, and then prioritizing it’s survival. There is no ambition.

Serpico's first duel with Guts is my favorite fight in Berserk because I greatly enjoy the highly tactical aspect and cunning fighting style, and I really like Serpico, especially because of his ties with my favorite character, Farnese. However, I must say that I am quite disappointed by his lack of development later in the story, particularly regarding his relationship with Farnese. I do in no way condone any form of incest, and I realize he declined her advance when she was 16, and yet he still tends to blush when he sees her in an undressed state (a reaction one would not expect from someone who considers her a sister) and the extent of his devotion to her seems somewhat questionable. Truth be told, upon learning their backstory, I was really looking forward to some interpersonal drama between them as they struggle to define their feelings and relationship, and when Roderick (who's actually a surprisingly agreeable gentleman) was introduced, I had hoped he would serve as a catalyst for just that, especially since the comments from Farnese's mother appeared to support this development. Alas, no such thing has come to pass, and he honestly does seem rather stagnant in terms of any development, which is probably what disappointed me the most in Berserk since Serpico is a cool and interesting character with, in particular regarding his relationship with Farnese, great potential who deserves better than to be treated as nothing but a servant. I really wanted to see their master-servant relationship transition into more of an open and genuine friendship with mutual respect and care. Now that Casca has been restored to sanity and Farnese's role as her caretaker effectively ended, perhaps Miura had planned precisely this kind of development for her and Serpico to occur next, and it is a great sadness that we may never know.

It's funny... I always thought that Serpico's cunning and perceptive nature reminded Guts (and the reader) of Judeau, which may be why Guts may have treated Serpico differently than he did anyone else at first. As Judeau is still my favorite character throughout the series, I kinda view Serpico as a shadowy mirror of Judeau, stronger in ways that Judeau couldn't be (such as his devotion to Farnese vs Judeau's secret affection for Caska) yet weaker in others (his conviction to Farnese essentially causing him not to care about maintaining positive relationships with others of his own initiative vs Judeau being well-liked by nearly everyone... even Guts and Corkus wordlessly agreed on that). Both are incredibly skilled fighters, but Serpico's determination seems to give him Guts-like stoicism and ability to handle anything, whereas Judeau was very much of human limitation and a truly supporting character, giving his life so that someone else - especially Caska - could live on. As much as I wanted Serpico to become my current favorite character of the series, his writing flaws (not character flaws) and apparent stagnation really leave him almost like an unfinished work of art, whereas Judeau was a well-rounded character right up until his demise, which likely helped cement his place at the top for me since there's no chance for him to stagnate. EDIT: In case I wasn't obvious, Serpico is in my top 4, beaten by Judeau, Guts, and Caska. Despite not having much to say, I always considered Pippin my 5th because I'm a bleeding heart for the gentle giant-type characters. Also, on a related note: I played through the Berserk video game when it came out and saved the entire playthrough on my channel, where I show my clear favoritism towards Judeau and, later, Serpico. Not trying to divert anyone there, just "showing my work", as it is.

Okay I feel stupid for not noticing this before, especially because Serpico is one of my favorite characters (along with Judeau), but since you compared him to a fox: the way his eyes are drawn is so very evocative of how kitsune are often depicted, with slanted, "closed" eyes. Gotta disagree with you about Serpico's eye expression when he saves the kid. I think you're missing the bigger pattern there. Yes Serpico is cold and bitter and focused primarily on Farnese... however I think if you look at the overall pattern of Serpico's actual ACTIONS (not just what he says), it's pretty clear Serpico does have a strong distaste for cruelty or injustice, though it's probably a personal 'I went through shit so I know how it feels' rather than a 'belief', hence his disagreements with Azan. I think you were more on-point when you mentioned his similarity to Guts. I think Serpico is another character, like Guts, who is 'outside' the world of the story in a way. He is another struggler, he's just much more narrowly focused and on-point. I mean his whole persona and story path is essentially the same as Guts', giving up everything after years of suffering to follow and protect the one woman he cares for, throwing away all the other cares of the world. But where Guts' experience is a blinding rage that makes him the berserker, Serpico's is a cold, smouldering disgust and hate that makes him withdraw into himself.

I don't think he should fully move away from Farnese, sinse it contradicts his whole character. Also I do think that his arc "feels" pretty complete. He fully accepted Guts and Farnese's way of becoming witch. But it would be nice if Serpico told Farnese that they are siblings. There's no need to hide it anymore. Also I do think that Farnese should apologize for all problems she caused to Serpico. Her behaviour is justified by loneliness and religion, i dont blame her, but in my opinion she still should do it. Also it seems Farnese forgot/did not believed that she burned Serpicos mother, so it could be also addressed.

Discovered your channel a little while ago and I love it. Would you ever consider making a video on the famous perception that Berserk goes downhill after the Golden Age arc? I know it's been talked about a lot, but I feel like you can make good points on both sides. As a giant Berserk fan myself, I'm torn. On one hand I do see GA as the pinnacle in terms of pure quality, on the other hand, the GA was literally there just to establish the story that actually is Berserk.

Serpico really cares about Farnese because she brought him closer to what his mother always wanted him to be. He probably sees Farnese almost as if she is his mother and that her keeping him in noble status is a way of preserving his mother’s memory in him and protecting her in a way when he couldn’t do anything for her when he took care of her as a child. Pretty gruesome and dark but what would anyone expect from Berserk. An excellent story and character though

I recently started reading Berserk and just finished Conviction... Can someone explain to me why all this love for Serpico when he is so stuck with Farnese? People like to portray him as a strong character but if that was the case he would have abandoned the Holy Iron Chain knights long ago. Farnese was a monster of a woman and yet he sticks to her side. This guy lives for Farnese! Is there a Serpico without Farnese? He is a well written character no doubt but I don't get the love he receives... Like Jaime Lannister in the first seasons of GoT was well written but there wasn't a single soul that liked him due to his obsession with Cercei. I wish he could be more than Farnese's slave boi

What people love him is how he changed in personality through the story. You're still at the end of the Convinction arc so you're still behind in the story. But later his attitude and and personality do become better with others. He still cares a lot for Farnese, but he too learned to be more indipendent.

You have to continue reading until halfway through the millenium falcon arc to see his characther more fleshed out. He doesn't appear more proactive because that's the type of characther that he is, since he's more reserved and like to lay low until he's have a clear oportunity to act.

I kinda wish Mirua cooled it on the loveable personas of characters. Like Chestnut Puck and High as a kite closed eyes Serpico. Them both being reduced into the background as gag characters is a mistake imo.

Serpico isn’t a gag character also Puck is an elf and like a guide for Guts to keep his humanity. When Guts really needed to be given advice on compassion and such Puck was there however when it became apparent that he was growing more out of his dark self from gaining more friends joining in his journey Puck became more elf like how he said he usually is. Also Isidro is more of a gag than Serpico is but he isn’t really that much of a gag in the first place either

I neither like or dislike Serpico. He is useful and is the second best support next to Schierke, but he is kind of boring. I think it is because of his obsession with Farnese. He is morally grey with everything due to him allowing Farnese to lead him to do everything and despite the fact that Farnese has evolved to be independent and dare I say likeable he keeps tailing her. He's kind of just there now and only needed as support. I don't want the story to be too distracted by Serpico unless he does use the Beheliet, but I wish Miura would cut the party down a bit because at this point in the manga we have a lot of just random people. (Seriously, why is mermaid girl still around?)

Eh, Serpico is great and all but I never believed his character as some badass swordsman that could give guts a run. I mean he never really did, but still. Guts was a warrior from the time he was a child, life and death situations on a daily basis, constant wars, survived the damn eclipse and then went on to survive despite being branded and destined to die. Serpico was...a servant to a noble? And then a herald of arms for her in a decorative army? I don’t know, he never really earned being seen as some fierce warrior or even intimidating in my opinion. Still, I like him and it sucks that his character has seemingly been all but forgotten at this point, for the time being at least.
