The Rise And Stall Of Wells Fargo

U.S. regulators say Wells Fargo has repeatedly misled and overcharged its customers. These allegations have rocked the 170-year-old bank, which still stands as one of the largest lenders in the U.S. The Federal Reserve continues to uphold an unprecedented cap on the bank's assets in response to the government's findings. These ongoing legal issues have weighed on the bank in recent years, sending numerous employees and executives out the door.
Reports of fraudulent activity in Wells Fargo's sales department first surfaced in 2013. The bank opened at least 3.5 million fraudulent accounts for unwitting customers, according to researchers at the Harvard Business School. This and other issues have led the government to fine the bank repeatedly.
Experts said the government has wide authority to limit Wells Fargo, given the reputation senior management has earned for imposing demanding business goals on its workforce. These lofty goals may have led employees to engage in deceitful and at times allegedly illegal behavior.
In a statement to CNBC, Wells Fargo said the bank is revising its management, risk and control frameworks while changing the company's culture and policies. "They said, "there's more work that we must do to rebuild trust, and we are committed to doing that work."
Watch the video to see how the Wells Fargo scandal positions the bank in 2022.

Getting approved has become pretty messy nowadays especially when you got bad credit history. I discovered the ad of a loan company “credit-synod" which gives personal & business loans to people at very low interest rates. I got about 38k from them and referred them to others in the family .

I worked for World Savings Bank, which was a savings & loans bank until Wachovia bought them in 2006. Then Wells Fargo bought Wachovia in 2008. In those 3 years I witnessed 3 different work environments and cultures and Wells was the most disgraceful, disgusting and greedy of the three banks. The unethical practices we did on a daily basis just to keep our jobs was something I’ll never forget and never repeat. I’ll never do business with them again.

When I got married I asked my wife where her bank account was and she had it was Wells. She said they were withdrawing $3 on her account every month she didn't write at least 5 checks. She was in college at the time and only had like $100 to her name so $3 was a lot back then. We went to the bank the next day, withdrew all her money, and closed her account and opened a joint account at Zions Bank where they have never charged us a penny for overdraft fees or any other fee for that matter for over 16 years.
@JasonB808
@JasonB808 Жыл бұрын
@@capincrunch1184 Not good. Many banks have a minimum balance and if money goes below that point they can charge fees for that. Also if the fee is more than what is in account, the Over Draw protection kicks in which is basically a $500 protection for the merchant so that a merchant gets paid. This service is essentially a Lon so big time fees are charged when it’s used. So double the fees of falling below minimum and the over draft protection. This is a normal thing banks do and not a Wells Fargo scandal thing. Keep at least 100 bucks in there to avoid those fees.😅

I worked at another bank before this scandal broke that asked tellers to get a certain (reasonable) amount of sales referrals a quarter (sending a customer to a banker to open a new account of some kind, etc.). Right before I left they hired a new branch manager who came over from Wells. He told us that our referral targets were far too low, and that tellers at his old Wells Fargo branch had to get TEN TIMES more referrals per quarter than we did. I remember specifically replying in shock, "how are they able to do that without having to resort to something shady?" He was upset with my reply, and ensured me that I was dead wrong. When the scandal broke, it didn't surprise me at all.

I worked there over a decade ago, they used to force us to bring a new customer in once a week, usually family members. They didn’t even need to be there in person, all we needed was their personal info. I remember an elderly employee getting yelled at and her job threatened for not forcing a family member to open an account! If you didn’t bring a new account in, and/or meet your goals you would be in big trouble! Worked there for 7 years, customers liked me, and I made my goals the right way. I would never work there again. It was a nightmare. One time I didn’t meet my goal as a personal banker, and the district manager sat inches from me as I presented a young adult 3 accounts, I think that customer, opened the accounts because she saw my district manager in close proximity, just sitting there listening to our conversation. I got a compensation check, from the class law suit , but it didn’t make up for the PTSD that job caused

Threatening my job all the time. The hardest part Wachovia management teams how to transition to was the sales pressure to their teams below them. They had a had time themselves. I never opened fake accounts to keep my job, I was a teller. Did I refer new accounts- when needed and obvious. I wasn’t a sales person and that’s the problem. Wells Fargo thought we were insurance agents and they wanted more and more policies! One of the worst work environments to work in. Jump into January was a nightmare!

Lol! Wachovia was bought by WFC because Wachovia was failing during the Great Recession because of the bad mortgages they bought. Wachovia bought AG Edwards in my hometown of St. Louis and fired 300 researchers in which the leaders were against the buyout because of Wachovia’s poor risk analysis over investments. Wachovia had sub-par managers at best. WFC was ruined once they were bought out by Norwest and the Norwest managers ruined the company tarnishing the Wells Fargo brand. WFC has sub-par middle level management, but the C-Suite is a complete turnover of JPM executives.

Wells Fargo has opened up a load of call centers overseas and cut hours for their U.S. reps because they don't need to pay people overseas as much. They are closing U.S. call centers, laying people off, and moving everything (besides customer service for the rich) over to India or the Philippines. Idaho call center is closed, Utah Everyday Banking is now closed. Everywhere else to follow. This is exactly what American Express did. It's sad when the people that got them through all their underhanded deals have their job shipped overseas. WF cares about their investors and the bottom line. They don't care about small accounts or their people. Just be kind to your reps when/if you call. They are scared that they are next.

As a consumer not in the banking industry, how do I know which banks *aren't* run by crooks? I don't want to keep my accounts at Wells Fargo, but how do I know if any alternative is any better? But more: I really want to know why people aren't in jail. This is how law enforcement works in this country. If a poor person commits a crime, then limitless brutality is ignored. If a bank rips people off systematically for over a decade, it's at worst "oh please Mr. Criminal, let us punish you a little bit" and the fine amounts to the metaphorical loose change behind the company's sofa cushions. The company should forfeit every penny they made from their illegal activity, and then a penalty should be on top of that; otherwise the company has made a net profit from their criminal activity. If the executives knew, they belong in jail. If they didn't know, then they're incompetent and shouldn't be allowed in any position of fiduciary trust. If the board of directors knew, they're accomplices; if they didn't, they were failing in their oversight and shouldn't be allowed to be on any board of directors. "What about the shareholders, they didn't do anything wrong ...". Yeah, well they shouldn't vote to put crooks in their executive suite or BoD. I'm really outraged that people in positions of authority always find a weasely mealy-mouthed B.S. excuse for the inexcusable, and the media and the voters always find a reason for shrugging our shoulders and looking the other way.

This behavior should surprise no one and Wells Fargo could not possibly be alone within their industry regarding these types of practices The fact is there is zero incentive for these executives to serve a public whose only way of rewarding them is with continued, blind allegiance. Absent any moral conscience, they take their chances in the areas where incentives do exist, such as criminal behavior, knowing that even if they're caught the punishment will be comparably minimal, as demonstrated here. "Limiting their growth" took away neither these executives freedom or multi-million dollar salaries. Our government allows the cycle to continue and we allow our legislators to remain in power. Apparently they did this to alot of people and they won in a class action lawsuit. He got less than a thousand for a vehicle that was worth at least 5k. I opened an account with them about 15 years ago. At the time, they insisted on having a second account tied to the original. They’ve delayed processing deposits of CASH by two days. Deposits that happened face to face with tellers within the damn branch. I hope they go down in flames for their actions!

Carrie Tolstedt was the head of retail banking and the bank did a jump into the new year each year in January and you were expected to hit 25% of your yearly Motivator (our daily tracker) goals in one month of the year. You had daily check in in the mornings and at night. This was pushed in the local stores not branches because we sold financial products…John Stumpf. Yes eight is great only because he could find anything to rhyme with 10!

When profit is the main motivator and sign of success, this type of stuff will continue too happen. And Wells Fargo isn't the only bank to ever put profits over integrity. So every bank should be under a microscope. And the fines should included claw backs on 100% of their bonus packages.

I sold out of it a couple of years ago after they reinstituted the dividend but at a severely lower rate but they are doing what is needed to be done and heading in the right direction, while i still haven't grabbed any shares i am still watching it as it reshapes itself, either way it is heading in the right direction.

I currently work for Wells Fargo and one of the things that we are always reminded of is to mitigate risk to prevent what happened. I can safely say is that Wells Faro is really trying to improve. Though one complaint I have is that some of the supervisors in my office don’t listen to their employees about some very small risks that could be resolved really easily

I have several credit cards with good credit score. Then I went to their branch to close my checking account with them, they told my they couldn’t because there were no bankers at the time. No bankers at 2 pm on a Tuesday? You serious? And why on earth do they need a banker to do that? A teller at Chase closed my chase checking account for me.

The assumption of banking regulations is that in a financial emergency the better banks will take over the failing banks and it’s superior culture will take over. What happened in 2008 was the culture of the inferior banks took over. Bank of America, Wells Fargo and others are not nearly as well run as they used to be. Instead of looking at the one failure, instead of a system built on false assumptions. Which doesn’t mean that Wells Fargo shouldn’t be punished. Bank of America is the greatest bank in history. It is terrible now.

I was with Wachovia Bank when Wells Fargo took over. It was always an issue about when a check deposit from my rents would clear (which could take days) as opposed to when my personal checks would come in to pay my bills. Why did it take days to give me credit for deposits, but only hours for debits? I remember wrangling with one of the tellers about the fact that the money was already there when my checks would bounce. "It's not cleared yet," is what they would tell me. Thing is, they could never tell me when the deposits WOULD clear. They were vague. Even though they were forced to change that "policy" of dragging their feet on deposits, I never saw a penny of late charges returned to me. It was around the same time that it came out that they were creating fake accounts, and opening accounts in customer's names that they never asked for. I was hoping the bank would be forced out of business by the federal government, but the crooks were allowed to continue to work it.

I think it is inaccurate to say the Wells Fargo Bank employees did this. The supervisors and managers would stand over the employees of the bank and coerce them into opening accounts customers never wanted or asked to open. It was rewarded if a customer service rep transferred a customer to another department to sell them more products. It was a toxic work environment that a family member of mine would not participate in because it was dishonest and despicable. Sadly most of the employees did as they feared losing their job. The pressure to make the goals came from the top (now fired) down to the managers/supervisors. It used to be a good place to work.

WFB is a Great Brand with hardworking middle managers and staff. Unfortunately, Charlie is missing the point of identifying the problem with his retail banking senior management team. The problem still exists with his executives three levels down from him. RPs and the two levels above need to be restructured and managed in a much effective manner. Lots of favoritism and mismanagement prevail at the highest level.
