@@AirtimeThrills As a fellow Houstonian having spent pretty much my entire Adult life in Houston(first came here in 1993 as a 10 year old), I know the FULL Story of Astroworld and why it abruptly closed down and got demolished in October 2005. Astroworld itself was NEVER actually in any real trouble. It made up at least 30% Revenue for The City of Houston and the County of Harris alone. What happened is that Premier themselves and Kieran Burke were absentminded and EXTREMELY Greedy Real Estate Brokers and Investors. When they brought Astroworld from Time Warner, they were planning on Outsourcing its Attractions and rides from the get go. Burke also had lobbyist Pork and Capital with local Crony Neo Con Republicans. Houston's Zoning and Real Estate has been entirely Republican run for over 40 years though our Mayor and City Legislation is Democrat, Burke's Cronies were the ones who pulled the plug on Astroworld. They stood to all personally profit $2 million a piece from destroying it and selling it off. The Plan to do so was already in the pipeline as Early as 1999. Originally, The Cronies wanted it closed in 2001, but Shareholders told Burke that there would be NO kickback on doing so and that he could face Real Estate Fraud Charges if he rushed it. All that happened in '01 is that Burke was able to bide time. I last went to AstroWorld in August 2004, It was still in decent shape and the Texas Cyclone itself still functioned, but obviously was getting old and needed some elbow grease. Attendance was still fairly solid and Morale was still very modest. I did get an uneasy feeling about Premier at the time, I could feel and tell something was amiss, because some of the attractions obviously had budget cuts(very asinine and pointless ones). Regarding Astroworld's Shutting down and Demolishing Post Katrina, The City was IRATE. People TURNED against Burke. In fact, he was RUN out of the City and DISGRACED. Astroworld closing down resulted in a $75 Million Operating Loss from Premier, with Houston suffering the brunt of a Revenue Collapse.

Riding greezed lightnin’ when i was 13 years old. June 1987. That’s where I became a coaster enthusiast. Astroworld was my home park from my birth in 1973 until it closed. Thank you for producing such a great documentary. It was a great trip down memory lane for Christmas! ***fun fact*** to add the “mystique” of the Texas cyclone, the height requirement for the back two cars was a whopping 60 inches! It was rite of passage for we Houstonians to finally conquer the back seat of the cyclone. I’ve never seen another ride in my life with such a high height requirement.

Same for me, but it was 1988 and I was 9. I cried because my Dad made me go, and when I got off the train, I had changed from being a train enthusiast to a coaster fanatic. I became obsessed with GL, XLR8, and Ultra Twister, my favorites during the early nineties as I was becoming a teenager

I believe it was around 2000 making me around 8 when I went to AstroWorld. I have family in Houston and we visit during school breaks and do fun like the zoo stuff. That trip is so special to me because my dad actually went with us. He has horrible social anxiety and a bad back. But I was still small and not able to everything (and terrified of looping coasters) so my mom convinced him to come and sit with me while everyone else rode the bigger rides. I remember riding cyclone at least 7 times. And I did ride the tube one, that just goes forward and back. I also remember going back to Houston and wanting to go back to AstroWorld to ride the bigger rides cause I could and not scared anymore. I was soooo sad hearing that it was closed. Riding the Tazmanian coaster was a huge goal of mine and I will never get ride it.

Thank you for all the hard work you have put into this series. Brings back great memories with friends and family. I grew up 30 mins from astroworld and had season passes for most of my childhood until the last years of the park. The one major thing that kept use from the park in the last years was how dirty and run down the entire place was. We could not have cared less about new rides every year, we loved all the old rides. But it felt like every surface in the park was dirty and grime covered. Some kid would puke after a ride and no one would clean it up. It would just bake into the sidewalk in 100* Texas heat. Water fountains didn’t function, bathrooms with sinks that didn’t work, ride que fans that would barely turn. Just tons of neglect. The final straw for my friends and I was Fright fest in 2001, three stabbings and multiple fist fights broke out within the first few hours we were there. We never went back. I really think if they would have just kept the place clean, safe and family friendly then the park would still be thriving today. Even with the old outdated rides like sky screamer or greezed lightning. Would have been nice to be able to pass on some great memories of the park with my kids.

Excellent documentary covering park history on a year by year basis. I used to work on one of the tribute sites that you sourced a lot of the video from but we gave up running the thing after so long, nice to see the collection live on in this film. A whole generation of Houstonians were robbed of having a local amusement park - whats sprung up in its wake such as Pleasure Pier in Galveston is a pale imitation of Astroworld which was such a huge cultural touchstone for Houston.

Growing up in 70-80's in Houston.. Astroworld was wicked fun. Every summer..we would get a Season Pass(with coke can discount) for under $40 and spend every day of the Summer riding rides and learning how to interact with people without a parent. It was looked forward to and a wellcome relief for Milluons if parents. Mom would drop us off as the Astrodome and pick us up after the daily fireworks. Saw the Cure, Bow-Wow-Wow,the Osmands, Chachi(Happy Days fame) and hundreds of other bands free with entry.. it was awesome! When it closed, and was demolished, it felt personal and was felt by generations of Houstonians and Visitors alike.

Astroworld's story really makes me sad. This park was a HUGE part of my mom's childhood, along with 80s Disneyworld with EPCOT, and she often tells me stories about these parks. She remembers back in the early 80s when they still had Marvel Mcfey. Lester Lion is her favorite character, and after watching the very few shows that are on KZbin, he's also my favorite. He's a lion [my favorite big cat], he's adorable, he's clumsy, funny, and Lester is also relatable as he gets upset because he's clumsy at baseball. I honestly wish Astroworld kept the Marvel Mcfey characters [except for Chiquito Pig], but alas, IP always wins out. Great Adventure also lost some of it's charm when they went from their original characters to IP. At least Knott's brought back Bear-y Tales. My mom also went to Jazzland/Six Flags New Orleans for a while, but stopped before the hurricane hit. I wish I could go to a theme park one day, as I hear so many cool things about theme parks, even defunct ones. But there's a type of theme park that REALLY makes me sad: theme parks that never got made. The biggest and most tragic example in my opinion is Claymation Station. Short story: Will Vinton, responsible for a LOT of claymation characters, was going to make his own theme park, but money problems prevented this from happening. I highly recommend checking out the documentary Claydream, not just for Claymation Station, but for the bittersweet story of Will Vinton's life and how Phill Knight [creator of NIKE] turned his studio into LAIKA.

He said to save my money for the park. I hadn't factored food and trinkets, but I learned fast. I spent most of my teens at the park, continuing to go until 1996 just before I loved away from Houston. It was my happiest place. I took my kids there and to Waterworld when it opened. man I was a kid when that happened. i remember Mindbender a lot, my uncle and I got scared of the entrance, and he was willing to wait with me outside, and remember looking at my moms glow in the dark watch so I wouldn't get scared in the dark. It was my favorite Theme park. Though last time I was there was in like 04, end of the year with a school band trip, and it was the worst day ever. The entire Park had a Power Outage for hours, and it was super hot and humid. I remember people with their feet dangling on rides, everyone walking around aimlessly because there was nothing to do except non electronic games, people going into Sword and Crown to sit and buy drinks to stop heat strokes but with no AC that place started to turn into a sweat smelling oven. Power was restored just like a hour before we had to leave, and I decided with friends to enter Tidal Wave, just to cool off. The wave we made in the ride didn't really get us wet, so we stood on the splash bridge and I wanted to stand in the dead center. I didn't expect the center of the wave to be super strong, so even though I braced myself I got flung hard. Like arms wrenched from the front railings and slamming into the back railings before I could hit the ground hard. Friends got me up, lost my Glasses and my plastic memorabilia bag full of stuff got ripped off my arm, luckily the attendants were able to find my Eyeglasses floating in the water slightly twisted but not my bag. It was the last time I ever went until I found out they closed the park during the next year candy fundraiser.

Funny how in 1976, Six Flags decided that the less populated St. Flags over Mid America would get the record breaking Screamin Eagle coaster designed by John Allen. Cost 3 million...a full one million more than Texas Cyclone. What is also more interesting is the cost of The Beast came in at 3.2 million. Cost there was kept down by keeping the ride close to the ground and limiting wood structure cost.

Sometimes they would send Park maps, stickers, brochures, letters, keychains, all kinds of crazy stuff. I had quite the collection. I sold this entire collection at a garage sale back in the early nineties for like five dollars. I'm still pissed off that I did that. But regarding astral world, I was always so enamored by how they created the little inner tube ride on the island of Thunder river. You would walk across the river on a bridge board the ride and ride the inner tube back across the river. I always found this design just the coolest thing. I had been in contact with Joyland about Greezed lightning in 2014. It was never built even though they had plans to because the soil where joyland sat couldn’t support it without massive investment which was out of the question for a mom and pop park. They had the land set aside for it and all ready to start construction to build it. It’s unfortunate and sad the fate of almost all the coasters there. It was a Hail Mary attempt to save his job and backfired is a horrible way.

🧐🤨3.2 million a day to operate in the late 90s -early 2000s was at least equivalent to what Disneyland was also costing... that's Amazing considering Disney was probably more expensive to visit and had far more foot traffic (Continental/Worldwide).
