I hope you cover the following sequels (both theatrical and direct-to-video): George of the Jungle 2 (which goes on and on about Brendan Fraser not returning, but not saying the same thing about Leslie Mann, who didn't need to make any more kids films after marrying Judd Apatow) The Lego Movie 2 (that one felt like a rehash of the first Lego Movie) Caddyshack 2 Look Who's Talking Now The Santa Clause 3 Honey We Shrunk Ourselves National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor Inspector Gadget 2 Weekend at Bernie's 2 Jingle All The Way 2 On a side note, if you ever decide to review the 1988 Tom Cruise movie Cocktail, you have to find and read the novel it was based on, please.

I know you're going more for movies and series, but why not someone behind a lot of the great 80's movies. On the original post for the Part 1 video, I made a comment where I was essentially surprised by the mention of "Beyond The Mat". Well, in that thought, why not a career retrospective of Barry Blaustein? I mean, an SNL writer who ends up writing the BEST comedies in the Eddie Murphy catalog, to loads of more movies, to the 3-4 years he spent putting together and filming "Beyond The Mat" (and why it was a big deal in the wrestling world, ESPECIALLY during it's release during "The Monday Night Wars"), to whatever he's doing now. Add in whatever came beforehand, and it's GOTTA be something interesting that there isn't a KZbin doc deep dive into like you've done here with "Police Academy".

So the fact they were churned out wasn’t an issue for me. I’m amazed the made as much money as they did, I always thought they were middling performing films reflective of their quality.

@MAMoreno3 ай бұрын
I have a great fondness for the first one, but the only sequel I can really say that I like is the third one. The second film showed just how important Lassard and the academy campus were to the series, as the precinct proved to be a rather dull setting, and the decision to focus so much on a zany new antagonist rather than on the antics of the returning cast reeked of desperation at a time when things should have still felt fresh. The third entry, while obviously toned down for a lower rating, restored much of what was missing from the earlier sequel and found a more appropriate use for Zed and Sweetchuck--that is, making them minor supporting characters who didn't overstay their welcome. Yes, the jokes were largely recycled from the first two movies, but at least they chose to recycle the best jokes. And the action sequence at the end is fantastic. Of course, having all the right elements doesn't necessarily mean having a coherent end product, and Citizens on Patrol is easily the most unfocused entry in the series. Mahoney, our protagonist for the first three entries, has been reduced down practically to a cameo to make room for aimless sketches involving Zed romancing Corinne Bohrer that do nothing to advance a plot (if the film can even be said to have one). The TV version, which restores a bit of Guttenberg's cut material, is marginally better, but this is still the franchise at its most meandering, and it's not surprising that a number of the headliners bowed out after this one. But even the fourth film can boast a handful of funny jokes, which is more than can be said about the fifth entry. Assignment Miami Beach gets credit for its setting (which is sufficiently exciting to justify leaving the academy) and for some attempt at a plot. It loses most of that credit for trying to introduce a Mahoney stand-in rather than simply handing the keys of lead actor over to Michael Winslow. The other inescapable problem is that it's almost unforgivable that some of Lassard's most loyal graduates would suddenly vanish when the time came to give him a public honor. The sixth film, while tired in its humor, is without a doubt the best of the post-Guttenberg era thanks to an above-average plot for this series (possibly the best outside of the original film). And while we're back in the boring precinct setting, at least there's a fascinating mystery with a fun payoff to keep things interesting. If only the mystery--or the relatively exotic setting--of Mission to Moscow could save it from being the series nadir. But there's no getting around it: in a franchise full of films that don't inspire much laughter, only one of them moves past "inoffensively unfunny" to "torturously unfunny."
@CultureSlice3 ай бұрын
What a brilliant summation of the series as a whole - you should make your own Police Academy documentary! Really interesting viewpoints on the merits of each, you're totally right about part 6. It's tired in places by that point but I think that one genuinely held up pretty well when I watched it again all these years later...and part 7 is definitely "torturously unfunny"! Thanks again for watching and commenting.

We’ve never been in a period where we’ve seen less originality or risk taking in Hollywood, if we’re going to see an attempted reboot of the Police Academy franchise, this is definitely the time. Given how desperate the streamers have been for content, I’m surprised there hasn’t been anything new from Police Academy in recent years, not even some sort of reunion let alone a reboot. Thanks for commenting and hope you enjoyed the video 😎

I’ve massive fond memories of Police Academy, Obviously the first one was a masterpiece and the others were never as good. In my rose tinted glasses after 5 they just lost it but still quote them to this day. My dad loved them too and on his death bed I showed him the scene with the boot polish from the first one which always made him laugh so that was nice at a sad time. Thanks for this video loved every minute of it just like Police Academy

Firstly, I’m really sorry to hear about your dad but glad you have great memories together. Thank you very much for leaving this comment and I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. My mum and I used to watch PA films together too, think I enjoyed them more than her generally but she liked Police Academy 4 for some reason?! Not sure why but I enjoyed part 6 a bit when I watched it back, think your evaluation about them losing it later isn’t that far off though. 6 was kind of back to basics, a lot of the humour wasn’t actually funny but it was strangely reassuring. Thanks again for your message and all the best.

I remember being dragged into the cinema by my friends to watch PA5. I was already secretly hating the franchise by then, but everyone was still crazy about it, so I pretended to be too so not to stand out. PA5 was miserable - no Mahoney, unfunny jokes, nothingburger of a plot, yet my friends were laughing like maniacs and I did my best to keep pretending I was having a good time. Thankfully, by the time PA6 arrived, it was no longer "cool" to be a fan of the franchise, so I was spared the suffering. I did ultimately watch all the sequels out of morbid curiosity, but at least I was free from having to fake enjoyment, so it was much less painful overall.
@CultureSlice3 ай бұрын
Was it still cool to like Police Academy by number 5?! That was definitely over soon after. I think there can be some fun found in the later ones just chilling at home but definitely would have felt differently if I had paid to see them in the cinema. 😂

PA6 had no chance against the likes of Batman, Ghostbusters 2, Back to the Future 2, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Look Who's Talking, When Harry Met Sally, UHF, Uncle Buck, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and the James Bond film License to Kill.

This is a beautiful beautiful doc for a very underrated and sadly forgotten franchise. Thank you forever for making it. Far too many reactors just watch the first one and annoyingly and ignorantly ignore all the other movies bc they're punk GenZoomers. I grew up with all of these movies as a kid and we went to see 6 in the theaters when my dad took us. As an adult, I always appreciated the more "grass roots" feel of the first 4, and appreciated the higher production values of 5 and 6. It almost feels like 2 eras bc the absence of SweetChuck, Guttenberg and Bobcat Goldthwait are definitely felt in part 5, despite the movie being better (I disagree with the movie being bad bc I feel like a few of the earlier ones are worse in how they feel like cheap comedy sketches sewed together). 5 and 6 feel more mainstreamed and 7 really shouldn't ever have been made but I get why they did. Anyway, a great classic franchise that wasn't always great film-wise but still greatly holds an 80s charm. The decade would not have been the same without these films!
@CultureSlice3 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for the praise on the doc, it is massively appreciated! Totally see your point about 5 feeling more like a properly made movie - the sitcom vibe is a bit too strong with some of the films in the franchise 😆 You are totally right on the decade not being the same without them, even though the actual content within them wasn't always great...it's a massive shame there aren't more (or really any) movies like these in cinemas these days!

If Kim Cattrall had stayed for the sequels, the series would've had a strong female lead to match Guttenberg's Mahoney.
@CultureSlice3 ай бұрын
Really good point - she could have given the series another focus and her journey would have been pretty compelling. She wasn’t replaced properly at all and that did end up hurting the series.
@josephadorno923 ай бұрын
@@CultureSlice Cattrall always likes to say a lot of the films she did were to pay the rent, but a closer look reveals that there was something in each role that appealed to her as an actress - even in "Porky's", she clearly loved how her character stands up to Mrs. Ballbricker, the big battleaxe of that series; if the sequels offered scripts that had something interesting, she would've come back.
@RoyStantz3 ай бұрын
Mahoney having a new girlfriend in each film would've made him like James Bond.
@josephadorno923 ай бұрын
@@RoyStantz that's kinda what they did in 3 and 4, though Mahoney has more in common with Fletch than James Bond; The 2nd film seemed to imply he was married.
@RoyStantz3 ай бұрын
@@josephadorno92 Actually, Mahoney was gonna have a love interest in 2 - a seamstress named Chloe Daniels, who was played by Julie Brown, only to find out later that all her scenes, bar two cameo appearances, were cut from the final print. According to Brown, Steve Guttenberg was not very nice to her on set. While filming the street fair scene, where Mahoney takes Chloe on a date by riding the Ferris Wheel, Guttenberg refused to go through with their scripted kissing scene, telling Brown that his character would not kiss hers. The entire romantic subplot with Mahoney and Chloe ended up being removed from the final cut. Without context, Chloe's appearance at Tackleberry's wedding as a bridesmaid (and the one who catches the bouquet to boot) is confusing to the viewer.

Thanks for the comment Doctor, and also thanks for being so polite too - that's definitely not always the case on here! Understand where you're coming from though, maybe a clunky way of showing it - but basically PA5 was not much of a success in cinemas! Hope you enjoyed the video, and thanks again.
