Yeah, it was never really for me but it was a bit of fun and was never considered hugely scandalous at the time, especially within the context of 'lad culture' being as ubiquitous as it was. To say it hasn't aged well/wouldn't be on TV nowadays would be accurate, but if anything the show's gradual downfall coincided with it losing its chaotic craziness and becoming a bit more bland and predictable.

Mid 2000s, the show had peaked. I just remember knowing pretty much everything that was going on in all 4 divisions of English football and could name at least a player from most teams. Those days are long gone now, as I can barely follow my own team let alone any others. The show did have a 3 hour slot during this time and I always felt it didn't really get going until the guests started arriving but I watched it start to finish as a teenager, I lived for football at the weekend. Would never now get away with some of the stuff they did with the soccerette like Tim pretending to tie his shoelaces in front of her and Rocket hounding her in the background. I did like the main gag, Stan Hibbert,, Barry Proudfoot etc. The OG crew lineup of Fenners, Sheephead, Neil, Tubes, Robbie Knox, Rocket and others all contributed and I love how they involved them. If you followed a professional team, surely enough they would get mentioned time to time and even have fans on the show which certain other broadcasters would never have done. Nothing lasts forever and I didn't mind Max but it was done when Tim Lovejoy left but I'll never forget those mid 2000s days.

Why? The term soccer is British in origin and was in very common usage in the UK until the North American Soccer League took off in the mid 70s and soccer, seemingly overnight, erroneously became an Americanism. Saying soccer instead of football now seems to be sacrilege for some. However, Sky Sports' flagship Saturday show is and has always been called Soccer Saturday.
@chelseagas26918 ай бұрын
@Newworldman66 It maybe a term originated in England, but it's never been common in England, or proper Footballing countries ever. Hence why the Governing bodies all have an F whether its FIFA, UEFA, AFCON etc, the FA, and all clubs are FC's. The only country that uses the term soccer is the US.
@Stoggler8 ай бұрын
@@chelseagas2691it was a very common word in Britain throughout most of the 20th century. The fact that a British programme was called Soccer AM and no one batted an eyelid at the time proves that. The word fell out of use quickly though by the late 90s.
@chelseagas26918 ай бұрын
@stuartjohnson160 It was called Soccer AM for copyright reasons. No proper Football fan has ever called it Soccer. Hence why every team is an FC, that plays in the FOOTBALL league, governed by the FA. Soccer has never been mentioned.

Same as most shows .. ruined by nanny culture and the terrifying thought that someone may get offended….

This was great. Huge part of my childhood was having bacon sandwiches and watching Soccer AM Special on Christmas Day.

Cracking show. Remember watching the Lovejoy days with dad and loved the random bits like sheep-ups, Ally McMoist (its just a wee stain) and soccerettes etc. When lovejoy left it was still ok but lost the soul of the show.. The replacements just didnt quite stack up and didnt have the chemistry with Helen the way Lovejoy did. Some comment said that the wokeness didnt kill this but in reality it was probably one of the last nails in the coffin. The show would have just been another football discussion if not for their edgy skits and everyone involved knew what they were doing and if anything didnt it to try and propel their own “brand” on screen. For me, i stopped watching when i got my own place and refused to pay for sky, which with their costs, was probably another reason it ran out of steam as a show!

And they replaced it with the garbage Saturday Social People who have never kicked a ball in their lives and thinking they're in the know

Saturday social is intentionally filled with stupid takes so they can be clipped for social media. TV programmes like this are used to drive engagements online for no other reason than clicks = money.

Used to watch it on away trips with the Baggies in a pub somewhere... Helen was a lovely lass.

I use to love waiting for whatever tunes would be playing in the goals of the week segments. So many tunes to remember

It makes literally zero sense that something like soccerettes was cancelled when at the same time, nowadays, we praise women who are making a lot of money through only fans or Instagram accounts etc. It’s either exploitation or it’s not. I don’t see how modelling can be exploitation on soccer am, but empowering on Only Fans?

It literally makes no sense, but especially with women it only works when it suits their agenda.

It was a great show full of fun and pushing boundaries which is what all shows should do. Unfortunately it died when it was decided by TV executives that anything men like is wrong. Conventional TV is dying because it doesn’t give people what they want anymore, maybe going back to pushing boundaries and being innovative would help. It can’t be a fluk that is exactly what video sites like KZbin do and people watch them and it’s not just about convenience it’s about off beat entertainment.

Getting the Star on the England shirt for their World Cup win, the whole Forces appreciation segment were absolutely incredible before social media. The Wrestlers segment and the Ramblers was also utter awesomeness

Was funny with Tim and Helen, was entertaining, after they left it became over produced, forgot who the audience was and tried to change its identity, nobody wanted that. It could still be on today if it was still in that early 2000s it would be super popular today. Saturday Social is a good awful show full of kids and morons. Nothing wrong with the Socceretes, all parties enjoyed it and knew what they were getting into

Died the moment the soccerettes segment was axed. The hairy strikers and tom daleys dive of the week were the few funny bits after that, and they soon got axed.

I would love you to make a video about SMart that aired in the 90's. I watched it growing up in Scotland but ended tragically in Marks passing

Great video. Used to watch this all the time when I was younger but as you mentioned with social media about, sitting around for 3 hours watching tv just wasn’t it anymore

Mixed feelings about SoccerAM. On the one hand, some of the features were quite good. Tim Lovejoy was always a bit too smug, a bit too up himself for me to ever truly like it. I also believe that the effect on the prevailing fan culture in this country hasn't been that positive. Gazzetta Football Italia was on, and I'd much rather watch James Richardson and a different kind of humour and culture.

I think Sky's price hikes had more of a say as to why people stopped watching it too. From being dirt cheap £15 a month to now almost £40+

Regarding the soccerette feature, the soccerettes weren't being exploited at all. They apply to go on, and they've already watched it so they know the drill and exactly what will happen. Nothing mysogynistic at all.

Says it all that I’ve only just realised it’s no longer on. It was embarrassing that every week they asked the same question when the answer was Darren Moore ( the only black manager in the league at the time ) yet every week nobody got it correct.

Ahh times were simpler - and funnier - back then. Its was like pub craic in the AM… damn this woke crap it takes the fun out of everything

The Soccerette had nothing to do with the downfall. The downfall was Tim Lovejoy leaving. The chemistry he and Helen and had, and the natural banter with the rest of the crew made it a good laugh, and it was a great way to start your Saturday morning. It was a show for it's time, and basically they could no longer produce the content which made it successful, basically because it wasn't woke or politically correct, and it has to be to get on TV today. As the commentator said towards the end. The 90's Lads Mag culture had died, and with it the show.
