Salam Dr Yasir, I happened to be a Chinese Muslim. At 16:06 of the video, the Chinese word corresponding to كاغد is "榖纸", it is pronounced as "Gu zhi" in modern Chinese, or kuk-tzi in the traditional Chinese. 榖(Gu) is a plant called "paper mulberry (or Broussonetia papyrifera)" , of which the skin is used to produce paper in ancient China. And 纸(zhi)simply means paper. Together Gu-zhi means the paper made from paper mulberry. In my opinion, the haraf (غ)is there to join up the two chinese word when they are pronounced together.

Shaykh, some Muslim brothers and sisters believe that face to face learning is more effective than visual learning. During Pandemic it is become more clear actually, who is learning Quran /Hadith on line , their understanding or practice in life is less than face to face. Same opinion many students and parents as well. But Alhamdulillah, because of technology we can listen your and many scholars lectures on line, many non Muslims also able to listen. Alhamdulillah, both way learning is beneficial. May Allah SWT use this technology to spread His Deen. Ameen

This is a wonderful lecture. HOWEVER, the structure of the book, called a codex, was first described by the Roman poet Martial in the 1st century AD and had become the dominant means of recording literature in the Roman Empire in the 4th century. So Europeans had widely adopted the Codex for their record keeping 700 years before it's adoption by the Muslim world, who probably learned about the codex from the conquest of Byzantine/Eastern Roman land, which then was all of North Africa and the Lenient. See here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codex They of course used vellum (treated leather) instead of paper. Another criticism is the fact that he described the pre-printing-press Europe as a land which was illiterate. Europe in 1400 more than likely had the same low literacy rate present in the Muslim world. The Renaissance had already been going on for a full century before the development of the printing press, with Dante completing his Divine Comedy in 1320, and writers such as Plutarch and Bracciolini similarly producing works in the 14th century, so it is not fair to call Europe a land without literature before the printing press. The printing press put the Renaissance into high gear, exponentially increasing its growth and spread, but it certainly did not build all of western literature out of thin air. It built off of a rich literary culture which was already present. Other than this, I have nothing but praise for this scholar. This is one of the most enlightening lectures I have seen in a while.
@szahmad2416
@szahmad2416 4 ай бұрын
Thanks; I agree that the praise should be mixed. I'll add more to this: the Indians were already book-binding long before the Muslims started the process. Indeed, the process might have spread to the Muslims from India, just as the Hindu numerals did. There is, unfortunately, a Muslim-centric tunnel vision that Islamic scholars tend to engage in, and Sh. Yasir is not (yet) immune to it; may Allah guide him.
@hubbellrowe9012
@hubbellrowe9012 4 ай бұрын
@@szahmad2416 Interesting! It would be very cool to see where exactly the use of book binding / codexes originated. I thought it originate somewhere in the late Roman Empire, but it could easily have been a technology they in tern learned from another culture. I know that by the 5th century, just about everyone who was anyone in Europe and the Mediterranean area had ditched the scroll for the codex (book).

I agree with the point on having a powerpoint when a Khateeb is giving a Khutba. I was recently at a Khutba at University and we had a very learned Khateeb whose Khutba was so in-depth and substance loaded that I felt I should be taking notes. But since I thought it would be strange to do so, I refrained from bringing a notepad to write down some notes. The idea is a clever way in which we can engage people and create a culture of learning and academic scholarship.

Using power point for Kuthba is a good idea. I am going to suggest it to the local Imam. They use cams and monitors to display the Imam lecturing during kuthba in other floors of the Masjid. So why not let the Imam to use a power point presentation. They are already using papers to write down information. Beside a Kuthba with a power point presentation can actually be used by people at later times for educational purpose.

Subhan'Allah, I didn't know that "kaghad" was an Arabized Chinese word for paper. We use a very similar word in Tarifit, which is spoken in the north of Morocco, namely "kighed" and it means paper. (Some pronounce it as shighed.) I guess we took it from the Arabs of the midievel times.

@M...salaam, kaghd in arabic, but when in turko-farsi-Urdu became Kaaghaz, like ' Waraque' (saf'ha). And Book= sahifah/Mushaf in arabic, adopted by turko-farsi-Urdu. Word " paper " french/german = papier(e) came from ancient Greek made of cyperus Papyrus plant, material used for writing, drawing, copying , painting, used in Egypt & mediterranean cities long before chinese. Uthmanian Empire encouraged adoption & promotion of entire arabic letters ( alphabets) in ancient Turko-mongolian, Farsi, all central Asian, Eastern European /Balkans, Afghans, chinese (Kashgar) countries & states. The most recent invention among the Indo-Europeans off shoots of sanscrit, was a modern new language invented by Mighty Mughal army's (Lashkar of different ethnic soldiers ) early 17th century inside Mughal army's cantonement around Dehli/Meruth, it has entire arabic letters plus 5 new letters pronounced & applied direct from Sanscrit, word 'URDU ' is turkish, meaning Lashkar, Urdu inherited 4 vocabularies with Farsi, Turkish, Arabic & Sanscrit. Urdu represents entire "Tehzib " (civilization).

@@raqib56 wa alaikumussalam. Thanks for your reply, it was an interesting read. I didn't know that Urdu was a product of the Mughal's army, I'll have to read up on some history. We Muslims want and need scientific progress today. We're sick and tired of hearing these stories of our "past glories" while we're learning virtually everything from non-Muslims today. Why are Lithuanians, Latvians, the Finnish and the Swedish, who never had a Medieval "golden age" better than any Muslim country in science and technology? We don't need to hear fairy tales. We need to solutions to today's problems.

I've always wondered why we don't use technology in Masjids for Khutbah along with the classical method of delivering it. Further, it's true there is No Muslim TV channel which educate or does or delivers what Islam entails I.e. knowledge, freedom of thought, educate etc etc. They are either focused heavily on "religious" matters or purport "progressive", nothing wholesome nor is it creatively delivered that the masses can understand or segments which highly educated people can appreciate.

technology was not known by people then it was very undeveloped. and out of fear of people becoming scholars and believing they have power the mufti banned it. but I understand how it's baffling

What's so disturbing about this video is that the speaker's emotional love for Islam get's in the way of truth. Islam always has to be wonderful and everyone else stupid. If Islamic knowledge is surpassed it is because of some other reason over which Muslims had no control. This is the same mind-set Muslims have today. Take his statement that Europeans made better paper because they had lots of rivers and there wasn't many rivers in Arabia. For over three hundred years the Islamic Empire controlled vast regions of the world abounding in rivers from India, to Turkey, to Sicily to Andalusia itself .

" SUCH a small thing" , No it is a big thing. Arrogance of thinking ourselves to be best and no need for improvement ,is the most and major reason for our decline then and now. Arrogance of the shaitan, made him be thrown out of favor by Allah (s.w.t)..

Paper decomposes as well. The rate of decomposition will depend on paper quality and the environmental conditions under which the paper is stored. High quality paper stored in environmentally controlled conditions can last for centuries. Cheap paper exposed to the ebbs and tides of the environment will decompose very quickly.
